I was glad when somebody told me, "You may go and collect Negro folklore(民间传说)." In a way, it would not be a new experience for me. When I pitched head first into the world of Negroism, it was fitting me like a tight chemise (衬衣).I couldn't see it for wearing it.It was only when I was out of college, away from my native surroundings that I could stand off and look at my garment. Then I had to have the spy-glass of anthropology to look through.
I was asked where I wanted to work and I said, "Florida. It's a place that draws people─Negroes from every Southern state and some from the North and West." So I knew that it was possible for me to get across the section of the Negro South in one state. And then I realized that I felt new myself, so it looked sensible for me to choose familiar ground.
I started in Eatonville, Florida, because I knew that the town was full of material and that I could get it without causing any hurt or harm. As early as I could remember, it was the habit of the men particularly to gather on the store porch in the
evenings and exchange stories.Even the women would stop and break a breath with them at times. As a child when I was sent down to the store, I' d drag out my leaving to hear more.
Folklore is not as easy to collect as it sounds. The ideal source is where there are the fewest outside influences, but these people are.reluctant at times to reveal that which the soul lives by.I knew that even I would have some hindrance(障碍)among strangers. But here in Eatonville I knew everybody was going to help me.

Dear editor,
I am writing to ask what has happened to our young people. They are not as polite or hard-working as my generation(一代人I will give you two examples.
Last Friday, I got on the underground at 9:15 a.m. It was very crowded so there was no free seat. There were some boys sitting on the seats near me.I didn't know why they were not at school. They were talking and laughing loudly. It was difficult for me to read my newspaper with all the noise. At the next stop, a pregnant(怀孕的)woman and her daughter got on with lots of shopping bags.I expected the boys to let them sit down. They saw the woman but they did nothing.I had to ask them to give the woman and her daughter seats.   They did so but gave me a rude look.
Last Saturday, I had dinner with my friend’s family.I was glad to see his children, who I hadn't seen for ten years.During the dinner, I started talking about world politics with the children. It soon became clear that they didn't know much about it.They couldn't tell me the name of the King of Spain or President of Italy. All they knew about was the Internet or which singers were the most beautiful. In my days, students knew the kings, the queens and the presidents of every country in Europe.
I worry about the future of Germany. How could these young people become good workers and parents? They sit around McDonald's after school instead of going to the library like I did at their age.Maybe they have too much money.Perhaps some readers can give us some ideas about what to do with this “lost generation”.
Yours sincerely,
Frantz Vogts.

Yesterday was my stepmom’s birthday. I hadn’t been home for a long time so I wanted to stop by the house to see her on this special day.

I have been struggling financially so I was afraid of the long trip. Gas is so expensive nowadays! Anyway, I filled my tank with gas and set off.

I stopped at the shopping mall and found a present. It was the perfect gift and I knew she

would love it. But when I got to the cashier my card was declined! I did not have enough money in my account to pay for the gift!

So I pondered the issue for a few minutes. I could put it back and get something cheaper, but I knew there was nothing else in the store she would like as much. So, I got on my smart-phone and transferred some money from my savings account so I was able to pay for the gift. It took a big chunk of my savings but I wanted her to have something special.

She loved the gift and I felt that even though I had spent almost all my money my stepmom deserved the best and I was glad I gave her the best that I could.

Before leaving my parents’ house, my dad took me to one side and, with our secret hand-shake, he gave me some money. I had not said anything to him about my finances but I guess my dad had just known it. When I got to the car, I saw the amount he gave me was three times what I had spent on the gas and the gift!

It goes to show that doing the right thing always comes with great rewards.

    D. Because he didn’t want others to copy their handshake.

I was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call. My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA Company. Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dripping from the bare trees that lined the street. I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat.

There was no sign of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask. I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant.

Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street. Next to it was the town’s only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint. I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat. I could not see his face and he didn’t raise his head at the sound of my footsteps.

Carefully, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait for my turn. It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the box call door
