The birthrate in Europe has been in a steady decrease since the 1960s. European countries, realizing crisis is at hand, are providing great encouragement for parents to create more babies in the 2lst century.
Affairs Ministry concluded last year that, 1 cash encouragement, some women just don’t want to be 2 holding the baby. “What we know is that it’s good for the 3 if men and women share the burden of having children, says Soren Kindlund, family policy adviser at the Swedish ministry. 4 Swedish parents can take their paid leave as they wish, men use a mere 12% of it; 60% of fathers do not take even a(n)5 day off work.
Experts fear that the tendency for women to use most of the parental leave could make employers6 to give young women the permanent jobs they need to qualify for paid maternity leave(产假). In January, Sweden decided to allow new fathers two months paid leave, with a warning: use it or7 it.
Kindlund admits that men are under 8 to stay at work, even though parental pay comes out of the public purse. “It’s not popular among bosses and perhaps with other men in the workplace,. “But it’s good for the father and for the child if they can 9 a relationship. ”
In Norway, a(n)10 policy has worked wonders. 70% of dads in Norway now take parental leave, and the birthrate of 1. 85 children per woman is one of the highest in Europe.

Don’t Take the Fun Out of Youth Sports
When I joined a private football league a few years ago, the sport meant everything to me. My coach(教练) said that I had lots of potential(潜力), and I became captain of my 1. That was before all the fun was taken out of 2.
At first, everyone on the team got 3 playing time. Then the team moved up to the top division after winning all its games, and the 4 started. Some parents, who had paid the coach extra so their daughters could have 5one-on-one training, got angry when she didn’t give them more playing time in our 6. The coach was replaced.
The new coach, however, took all the fun out of the game. All we did during practice was 7. I always wished to God that it would rain so we would not have the 8. Of course, all teams run drills; they are 9. But we ran so much that, afterwards, we had trouble 10. Younger people shouldn’t be doing exercises 11 for 18-year-olds.
I was very thin 12 I started football, but as a member of this team I wouldn’t eat much, because I was afraid of being too 13 to run. I feared making mistakes, and the added pressure caused me to make more than my usual 14.
Is all this pressure necessary? I 15 up leaving the football team. Four other girls did the same, and two of them stopped playing football completely. That’s 16, because they had so much potential. They were just burned-out with all the pressure they 17 from the coach or their parents.
I continued playing football at school and 18 my love for it. I joined a private team coached by my school coach. When I started playing 19 him, he told me I needed to relax because I looked nervous. After I 20 down, I played better. When you enjoy something, it’s a lot easier to do it well.

With these words I began to 1 the problem, the problem of my telephone addiction. I used to call people 2, from the moment I woke up to the time I went to sleep. I 3 to be phoned, I wanted to phone. Just one more call.
It started socially . It seemed 4, just a quick chat. Gradually though, the 5 got worse. Soon it was 6 use, until, finally, addiction.
And it began to affect(影响) my 7. During the day I would disappear for 8 call. If I couldn’t make a call, I spent the whole time waiting for the phone to ring. Getting more and more 9, in the end, I would ring someone, then someone else, 10 myself just one more call.
I was phoning people and 11 messages to make sure 12 calls would see me through the day. I used to arrive at friends
homes and before the door was closed, go straight for the phone with the 13 “Is it OK if I just use the phone. . . ?” At work, I became 14 when my fellow workers tried to 15 me from using the phone. And one day I hit my boss(with the phone). Finally, the police caught me 16 a phone box that had taken my last one pound coin, and I was 17 to see a psychiatrist(心理医生).
I haven’t 18 a phone in the house for three weeks now, and it’s several days 19 I used a phone box. I try not to watch TV because there are 20 people on it making phone calls. My name is Jim Shelley and I am an addict.

It was the night before the composition was due. As I looked at the list of topics(题目), “The Art of Eating Spaghetti(意大利面条)” caught my eye. The word “spaghetti” brought back the 1 of an evening at Uncle Alien’s in Belleville 2all of us were seated around the table and Aunt Pat 3 spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was an exotic(外来的) treat in 4days. Never had I eaten spaghetti, and 5 of the grown-ups had enough experience to be6it. What laughing 7 we had about the8respectable method for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth. 9, I wanted to write about that, but I wanted to 10 it down simply for my own 11, not for Mr. Fleagle, my composition teacher. 12, I would write something else.
When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no 13 left to write a proper composition for Mr. Fleagle. There was no choice next morning but to 14my work. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the 15 papers. He said, “Now, class, I want to read you a composition, ‘The Art of Eating Spaghetti’. ”
My words! He was reading my words out 16 to the whole class. 17 laughed, then the whole class was laughing with open-hearted enjoyment. I did my best not to show18, but what I was feeling was pure happiness, 19 my words had the power to make people20.

I know I should have told the headmaster at the time. That was my real 1.
He had gone out of the study for some2, leaving me alone. In his absence I looked to see what was on his3. In the 4was a small piece of paper on which were written the 5“English Writing Prize 1949. History Is a Serious of Biographies (人物传记)”.
A(n)6boy would have avoided looking at the title as soon as he saw the7. I did not. The subject of the English Writing Prize was kept a8until the start of the exam so I could not9reading it.
When the headmaster10, I was looking out of the window.
I should have told him what had11then. It would have been so 12to say: “I’m sorry, but I 13the title for the English Writing Prize on your desk. You’11 have to14it.”
The chance passed and I did not take it. I sat for the exam the next day and I won. I didn’t mean to cheat, but it was still15anyhow.
That was thirty-eight years ago when I was fifteen. I have never told anyone about it before, nor have I tried to explain to myself why not.

A few weeks after my first wife, Georgia, was called to heaven, I was cooking dinner for my son and myself. For a1, I had decided on frozen peas. As I was cutting open the bag, it 2from my hand and crashed to the floor. The peas, like marbles, 3everywhere. I tried to use a broom, 4with each swipe they just rolled across the kitchen.
For the next week, every time I was in the5, I found a pea---in a corner, or behind a table leg. They kept6. Eight months later I pulled out the refrigerator to clean behind it, and712 frozen peas hidden underneath.
At the time I found those few remaining8, I was in a new relationship with a wonderful9I’d met in a support group. After we married, I was reminded10those peas under the refrigerator, and realized that my 11had been like that bag of frozen peas. It had shattered(破碎. My wife had died; I was in a new city with a busy job, and with a son having trouble 12his new surroundings and the13of his mother. I was a bag of spilled frozen peas; my life had come apart and scattered.
When life gets you14, when everything you know comes apart, and when you think you’11 never 15, remember that it’s just a bag of scattered frozen peas. The peas can be16, and life will move on. You’11 find all the peas17, including the ones that are hardest to find. And when you’ve got them18you’11 start to feel whole again.
The life you know can break apart at any time. But you’11 have to19, and how fast you collect your peas depends on you. Will you keep scattering them around with a broom,20will you pick them up one by one and put your life back together?

Every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up he4 pass the time by describing to his5 all the things he could see outside the window. “The window overlooks a6 with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans play on the water 7 children sail their model boats. Young lovers walk8 among flowers of every colour. Grand old trees grace(装扮) the landscape, and a fine9 of the city skyline can be seen in the distance.” As the man by the window10 all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and11 the scene.
Days and weeks passed. On morning, the day nurse came only to find the man by the window had died12 in his sleep. When the man’s body was13, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the14. The nurse agreed and after making sure he was15, she left. Slowly and painfully, the man raised himself16 to take his first look at the17 world outside by himself. But to his18, he found it faced nothing19 a blank wall.
In fact, the man by the window was20 and could not even see the wall. He just wanted to encourage his roommate.

About two years ago while working downtown at our company’s headquarters I met a man. I’11 call him “Martin”. Martin was a short, middle-aged man with a glandular(内分泌) problem. He was fat, using a walking stick to help, and was painfully shy. Almost every morning I saw Martin on the elevator. We were usually the only people there, so I made 1conversation as we 2 to the 15th floor. I chatted with him about sometimes weather and sometimes about each other’s weekend.
About six months 3our daily elevator chats, Martin came to my office and asked if I had a minute to chat. Though we worked on the same floor, I’m sure he had to 4to find me. I invited him to sit down. He said, “I wanted to come and say 5. The company has let me go. Today will be my last day.”
I didn’t know what to say. 6I was too familiar with saying goodbye to co-workers, it was never 7. Honestly, I usually avoid talking about the event because I felt 8and at a loss for words. I told him I was 9and asked if there was anything I could do. He said, “No, I’11 be fine, I just wanted to take the time to thank you.” I was now 10. He explained that our daily talks had 11a lot to him.
He thanked me not only for 12with him in the mornings, but for speaking directly to him and others on the elevator, and for telling him a quick joke in the crowded cafeteria. It seemed that 13had ever been his friend before—or if so they were 14to him in public.
He said he didn’t want to 15much of my time, as he knew I was busy and he needed to 16his personal things. He had tears in his eyes as he shook my hand and left.
I’ve never seen him since, but I imagine he’s doing well. Meeting him 17my life. Now when I’m in a hurry, or have a bad day, I try extra hard to speak 18to those around me. I remind myself that it’s just as easy to say something nice as to say something 19, and I’m awed (敬畏) at how 20our daily actions are.
