Butch O’Hare was a fighter pilot. One day his entire squadron(中队)was sent on a mission. In the air after taking off, he realized that someone had1 to fill up the tank. He would not have enough2 to complete his flight and get back to his ship. His flight3 told him to return to the carrier (航空母舰).
As he was returning to the mother4 , he saw something that turned his blood5 . A squadron of Japanese planes was speeding their way toward the6 fleet(舰队).The fleet was defenseless. He couldn’t7 his squadron and brings them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he8 the fleet of the coming danger.
There was only one thing to do. He9 force the Japanese away from the fleet. Laying aside all the thoughts of personal10 , he dove his plane into the formation of Japanese11 . His plane fired hard as he charged in, attacking one12 enemy plane and then another. Butch fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition(弹药)13 . Bravely he continued the fighting. He dove at the planes,14 to hit the enemy planes in hopes of15 as many enemy planes as possible.16, the angry Japanese squadron flew away in another17 . With a great weight taken off his18 Butch O’Hare and his damaged fighter came back to the carrier.
The film from the camera on his plane told the19 . It showed Butch’s daring action to20 his fleet. He had in fact destroyed five enemy aircraft. He became an American hero.

While we were riding the old German bus in Albania, a gypsy (吉普赛人) girl got on. She was about seven years old. Most gypsy children had a1look in their eyes. They were hardened by the world and by2they had experienced. The gypsies3in slums (贫民窟). The children begged on the streets or did other work so that their parents could4to buy wine. Every time we saw these5, we could always see the dead look in their eyes. But not this6. She was cheerful and had a beautiful smile on her face. As soon as she7, she started talking to us. Her name was Angela and she was on her8to visit her grandfather in a nearby slum village. I9my purse for something nice to give her.10, all I had with me was gum. She eagerly put a11in her mouth, and then closed her eyes a little while because the12was mint-flavored (薄荷味). It seemed like she had13tasted it before. She14in a funny way and the other people on the bus were all amused by what she did. When the bus15, she picked up the big bag she was carrying,16and jumped out of the bus.
She is out of my life, but not out of my17. This girl deserved so much more than her18surroundings, yet she didn’t let any of them get herself19. I pray I will20her again someday, so that I can give her that hug which I should have given her that day on the bus!

As a teacher, my daily activity involves driving to a new school almost every day.
On one particular day during my lunch break, I drove to a nearby square to get a coffee. Upon returning to the1, I realized I had locked my phone and my2 inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the3. So I hurried into a McDonald’s in the same square, and asked the man at the counter, who happened to be the4, to call a taxi for me. After I5 explained my situation to him, he rushed inside to make the phone while I waited anxiously in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to6to my school at this point.
A moment later, the manager returned only to tell me that the line was7, and that he had not been able to8the taxi yet. I think both9 and fear could be seen in my face.
Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and10to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and got back to the classroom with two minutes to11before the bell rang!
This experience made me12that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to happen, which has an unimaginable influence on those who receive them.

During one of the toughest weeks of my life, I had the chance to experience surprising grace(善举).
I was in my office, when a young man came by. He was obviously very1and close to tears. He was an older student and always appeared like a tough guy,2showing emotion.
He had told me3that he was dealing with some difficult4problems. He was a caregiver for his sister who was ill. This day he came in, sat down and just sobbed(抽泣). I5while he told me how he had been up all night in the hospital with his sister and that was why he couldn’t take my exam that morning. I told him not to6it at all. He was clearly in no shape for an exam. I told him to go home and7. I reassured(使放心) him that I would do everything I could to help him get through the class.
I just sat there while he sobbed. “I think she might die,” he gasped(喘着气说). “What am I going to do?” It was clear to me that he had never8this fear out loud to anyone. I just sat there, fully focused on him and his9, and tried to offer some soft words of10.
After quite some time, he11himself. I reassured him again that it didn’t matter to me when he took his exam and that I would help him through. Then he left.
Afterwards, I felt like his12was a blessing(为人带来幸福的事). Being able to help him while I was in pain myself was the most valuable gift.
Life never gives more than we can handle.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d1known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t2lives, he was planting trees.
The good doctor had some3theories on planting trees. He believed in “No pains, no gains”. He never4his new trees, which was5many people. Once I asked why. He6that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each following tree generation will7weaker and weaker. So you have to make things8for them. He talked about how watering trees9shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in10of water. I came to understand that he meant deep roots were to be11. I planted a couple of trees a few years back and I took good care of them. Two years of12has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows, they13and tremble their branches. Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs’. The lack of water seemed to14them in ways comfort and ease never could.
I used to15for my sons that their lives will be easy. But16I’ve been thinking that it’s time to17my prayer. I know my children are going to meet18, and I’m praying they will be strong. The prayer for comfort is seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots,19when the winds blow, we won’t be20away.

Dash of Hope
"Dash" is a symbol which represents every day we've spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your "dash" is important.
Recently I 1about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn't help but feel it was not by 2, nor happenstance(意外事件), that she had been named "Hope". The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 3 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 4I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special.
Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was 5 a "wish" in early December 2010 by the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation after being 6that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 7 in her area were waiting for their wishes to be achieved , she unselfishly used her wish to 8that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done 9January 16, 2011. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her10request could not be granted as the funds were simply 11. They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 12dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 13, but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 14to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 15as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 16the story of this caring young girl who had 17the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in 18money to help make Hope's dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 19, but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, "A Celebration of Hope" on January 16, 2011 , the 20was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!

      announcement

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes1the skies like beautiful birds dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them under2.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great3. They4and pulled, but the restraining string and the clumsy tail kept them in tow (拖着), facing upward and against the5. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be6 !” They flew beautifully even7they fought the restraint of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in getting8 . “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly9the wind.”
Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the10of an unsympathetic wind. It flew up and down to the ground and11in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last”, free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown12along the ground.
How much like13we sometimes are. The heaven gives us adversity (逆境) and restrictions,14to follow from which we can grow and15strength. Some of us resist the rules so hard that we never fly to reach the heights we might have16. We keep part of the rules and never17high enough to get our tails off the ground.
Let us each rise to the great heights,18that some of the restraints that we may be annoyed at are19the powerful force that helps us climb and20our goal.

eBooks still some way away from students
Twelve-year-old Tang Yin is one of the earliest students to test a digital textbook in China. The boy said he was a little1when he received the monochromatic(单色的) flat device in April, 2010, because he thought it should be a “2cool” laptop. But Tan still cherishes(珍爱) his new equipment like “protecting my3,” said the fifth grader. After all, not every student has the opportunity to4the eBook, which is worth $294 (¥2,000 yuan), he said.
The 50 eBooks,5by Taiwan eBook manufacturer Chuanqi Photoelectric Technology in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, enables one class at Yangzhou Sanyuanqiao Elementary School to be the6group of students in the Chinese mainland to replace their regular textbooks with electronic ones. Out of 1000 students, Tang’s class was the lucky7.
“Our school could not8the project without the company’s donation,” said Yuan Shishan, vice-headmaster of the primary school.9the digital book is considered environmentally friendly, because it replaces paper books and saves money in the long run, the price is much higher than most Chinese10can afford. Also, some technical defects, the11of taking notes and monochromatic display, make the eBook fail to meet the expectations of students and teachers.
“There’s still a/an12way to go before the eBook really plays an important role in education,” said the headmaster.
According to Yuan, the annual average income of a13family in Yangzhou is about 20,000 to 30,000 yuan, and neither the parents nor the school can afford the 2,000 yuan14book.
The school doesn’t allow the students to take their eBooks to their homes. The devices are15after class, and are locked in the headmaster’s office.
