Mary’s parents are different from the average. While she was growing up they required her to1. First of all she had to work around their home. Later on Mary worked for other people.
When Mary was 14 years old, her mother and father told her that they were no 2going to buy her clothes. Sure, they would continue to buy shoes for her and also the special clothes like suits, but 3else was her responsibility. Some people thought that they were4, but they wanted to teach Mary some5 lessons. One thing she learned was that nothing is cheap or6. She learned how to deal with her money carefully. Another thing she learned was 7to keep from wearing out(穿破)her clothes too fast.
Also, even8 Mary went to school she was9 to work. All through her high school and10 years she worked as well as studied. Mary’s parents had plenty of11 but they felt she would12 her education more if she had to13 it. And strange as it may seem, they had heard that students who worked part- time generally got14 grades than students who did no work.
Now Mary is a mother herself. She requires her children to do the same15 she did, especially working part- time as they go to school.

Wings of Angel
I used to hate myself because I wasn’t “normal”. Everyone else could play on the monkey bars and ride on a bicycle, but not1. I had a severe spinal cord disorder (脊髓病) and I knew I would always be much2than others.
I hated going to school and I hated people3at me. I hated seeing others smiling broadly and standing straight and tall. And most of all, I hated looking in the4and seeing an ugly hunchback (驼背).
My friends found me5because I didn’t let others get close to me. I thought I was going to go on like this for the rest of my life6Angela appeared.
That afternoon, I was sitting by myself in a corner of the school — a spot where no one would7me. That’s when I first heard her voice.
“Hi. Can I sit down?”
I raised my head and there she was, with an irresistible smile on her round face.
“What are you looking at?” she asked.
“Ants.”
“What are they doing?”
“No idea.”
“I bet they’re playing games and making friends. Don’t you think so?”
That was how our8started and it didn’t stop. We talked about everything under the sun—the ants, the clouds, my little niche (处境) — until it was sunset.
Then suddenly, she saw my9. She just stared.
My heart sank. What I feared most had happened and I knew for sure she would10me now.
She stood up, pointed at my back and said, “I know11your back is hunched.”
I closed my eyes like a criminal waiting to be sentenced. I begged in my heart for her to12, but she just kept on going. “I know what you’ve got in there. Do you?”
“No,” I answered13.
She bent and whispered in my ears.
“Your back is hunched because you’ve got a pair of wings from the angels.”
I was14. I looked into her eyes and her kindness touched my heart. From that day on, I started to learn to15myself because I have the wings of an angel and a kind-hearted friend.

Nowadays1children go to school2few of them have ever asked themselves3they go there. Some children think that they go to school just to learn their mother tongue, English and other foreign languages, history, science,4and a few other5. But why do they learn these things? Are these the only things they should learn at school?
Actually children go to school to6themselves for the time when they will be grown up and will have to7themselves. They learn their own language8they will be able to9with people in foreign countries, make friends with them and learn10about their culture and history. They learn mathematics in order to be able to measure the things around them and calculate sums.11helps them understand something about the world around them and history teaches them about the past and people. Nearly everything they study at school has some use12 in their 13, but there is one more14reason why children go to school.
It is more important to receive education than just learning15.We go to school16to learn how to learn. Learning is not just for school but for life. So even after we have left school, we have to continue to learn. A man who17knows how to learn will always be18because whenever he is faced with a completely new task or problem, he will teach himself how to deal with it in the best way.19, children do not go to school just to learn languages, mathematics, geography, etc. They go to school to20how to learn.

The town I live in is about to put cameras at all traffic lights to catch people who run red lights. It1me of how many people I’ve seen who take the yellow light as a signal to go faster. I also can’t2why people don’t move when the traffic light has turned green. Above all, there are those3situations in which someone doesn’t even4that the light is red, and just keeps going; that is how many accidents happen. All these situations make me5about the purpose of traffic lights.
However, it’s even more6to imagine letting people make their own7at a crowded traffic crossing. Who decides who goes next?8I guess I do like the idea of a system to9traffic. And I also do my best to10the traffic signals: to go, to be11, and to stop when I’m supposed to.
It occurs to me that my12have done much the same for me in terms of13me how to live. They have given me many14lights: to live in harmony with others to help others, to live with15and purpose. They have also given me some red lights so that my16doesn’t goastray(走入歧途): to watch my temper, and to control my desires. And there have been some yellow lights: to watch how much I drink, to keep control of my behavior, to17school regularly and work hard.
If I obey these signals, my life will be as18as it can. Just as I’m wise to pay attention to the traffic lights when I’m walking19the street, I’m wise to pay attention to the “life20” given me by my parents.

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And1assigned(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always2to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 3after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy4because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the5to keep pace with the others on the team and they would laugh at me. Without the teacher who kept insisting on my “6for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the7of it! When I first started8the practice sessions (练习赛), I didn’t9know the rules of the game, not to mention what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get10and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid.11, I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to12on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t13“just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the14and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive15in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the process (过程)— friends who respected my16to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my17self-confidence comes more praise (赞扬) from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “18”in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, 19raising my hand—even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent20I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

I had a very special teacher many years ago whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his1, she shared her insights(顿悟) with the students. When the class was nearly over, she2and said, “I would like to3with all of you a thought that has4to do with class, but which I feel is very5.
“Each of us is put here on the6to learn, share, love and appreciate ourselves. None of us knows when this7will end. At any moment it can be8. Perhaps this is life’s way of telling us that we must make good9of every day.” Her eyes beginning to10,she went on saying, “So I would like you all to11me. From now on, on your way home, find something12to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see- it could be scent(香味) of fresh bread, or it could be the13of the wind slightly rustling(发出沙沙声) the leaves.”
“Please look for these things, and14them. The little things we are put here on the earth to enjoy. They are15observing , for at any time they can all be taken away.”
The class was totally quiet. We all picked up our books and went out of the room16. That afternoon, on my way home I noticed17things than before. Every time I think of that teacher and remember what a(n)18she made on all of us, I try to19all of those things that sometimes we all ignore. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often regret,20the things we didn’t do.

A snake handler who cheated death after being badly bitten by a snake is now teaching Australians how to1in the case.Neville-Burns has been bitten twelve times during his long work with snakes, and uses all his2to give lectures to people at risk of meeting a snake3.
Australia is home to most of the world's most deadly snakes. So Neville4the people how to deal with such close unexpected meetings..He sets up an enclosed area, and one by one, brings out four snakes so people can know the5of each snake.First out of the bag is a Red Black Snake. He 6put his finger on it.That's 7the entire forefinger on his right hand was8after he was bitten. But that wasn't his9experience.-When he was 18? a Brown Snake he had been holding by the tail10and bit him in the face.He was rushed to11and he was saved from death.
He says a Cobra Snake is perhaps very 12but not the most venomous(有毒的). A black Manba Snake, one of the most 13, is the longest venomous snake in the world.A Brown Snake is the final14at Neville's show.It is one of the most common snakes in Australia, and is the second most venomous in the world.Several times during the15it bits the bag; which Neville16lin front of it.
Neville's advice is to stay17if a snake is nearby, as most will only18if they feel threatened. He tells people to be19but not to pick one 'up by the tail.He then does exactly that as part of his show.He also says he20believes in the old saying "once bitten, twice shy".

What I noticed first about my new parrot, Chico, was that he couldn’t fly. His wings had been cut short and he was stuck on the1just like us humans. When the weather turned nice, I took Chico outside. I sat him on a branch of a tree, hoping to make him2. At first he seemed3. He walked back and forth on the branch looking anxious or nervous. He didn’t even flap his wings in an attempt to fly. Somehow he knew he was4.
One day Chico got especially excited . He paced back and forth and made an incredible amount of5. Then all of a sudden he stopped and let out an even louder scream. He started6flapping his wings for the first time ever - then he lifted off the7like a space shuttle! I was amazed and8. Little did I know his feathers had been growing back, and Chico had been9until the moment was ripe for escape!
Two days later Chico10. First I tried to trick him back with food, but he would not come near me. Then I took his11and put it away—still he would not come. Finally, I made him a firm promise that I would let him12every day the weather was nice if he did come back.13, he flew onto my shoulder.
From that day on, whenever the weather was good I would let him out early and he would fly around and be back before dark. The14lasted for two months before suddenly Chico became15. The vet said that he had been infected with a disease from the pigeons in the neighborhood. Within a few days he died.
I was very sad. The16crossed my mind that if I had not set him free to fly, he would be still alive. But what17is there in being a bird if you can’t fly?
Chico made his first break for 18on a late Monday afternoon in April. When will you make yours? You too can take a19when the conditions are right, knowing you too, in your own way, were built to fly. If you don’t20, what will be the purpose of your life?
