When I was a girl, in the deserts of Somalia(索马里), my family was nomadic(游牧的),1with our animals, and leading a happy life.
I was about thirteen 2my father called me at the end of a hot day. “Come and 3here.” He said.“I’ve found you a 4! We have arranged that he will 5me five camels. “ That night I ran away. I was6.For almost three weeks, I walked7the desert, and finally I got to my auntie’s house in Mogadishu. Auntie’s husband was an ambassador(大使), and in a few months I8Britain to work at his London house.
One day a9called Michael Goss saw me in the street. He took my picture and the photographs were 10. “You should try and do 11,” he told me. When my aunt and uncle12Africa, I stayed in London. I found a place to stay and got 13at McDonald’s before I took Michael Goss’s photographs to an agency one day. They 14me to a studio, and my picture appeared15of the Pirelli calendar. Soon after that, the agency got me 16 in the James Bond film The Living Daylights.
That was seven years ago. Since then I’ve done modeling all over the world and I’ve had frequent17in magazines such as Vogue and Elle. I have 18hosted the US music program Soul Train.
Once19five camels, now I can 20up to ?5000 for one day’s work. I have gone from the bottom to the top.

An Act of Kindness
Mother was making a dish for Mrs. Smith next door ,1six-year-old Susie came up and2why Mommy was doing so .
“Because Mrs. Smith is very sad: she lost her daughter and she has a broken heart. We need to take care of her3.And when someone is very , very sad , they have trouble doing the4things like making dinner or other housework . Because we’re part of a5and Mrs Smith is our neighbor , we need to do some thing to help her. Mrs Smith won’t6be able to talk with or hug her daughter or do all those wonderful things that mommies and daughters do together. You’re a very smart girl , Susie ; maybe you’11 think of some way to help take care of Mrs. Smith.”
Susie thought seriously about this7and how she could do her part in8Mrs. Smith. A few minutes later , Susie knocked on her door. After a few moments , Mrs Smith9the knock with a “Hi , Susie”.
Susie noticed that Mrs. Smith didn’t have that10musical quality about her voice when she greeted someone, and she also looked as though having been11because her eyes were weary and swollen(肿胀). “What can I do for you , Susie ?” asked Mrs. Smith.
“My mommy says that you lost your daughter and you’re very , very sad with a broken heart.” Susie12her hand out shyly. In it was a13. “This is for your14. Mrs. Smith knelt down and hugged Susie , choking back her tears.15her tears she said ,”thank you , darling girl, this will help a lot.”
Mrs. Smith accepted Susie’s act of kindness and took it one step16. She bought a small key ring with a picture frame ----17designed to carry keys and proudly display a family portrait at the same time. Mrs. Smith placed Susie’s Band –Aid in the frame to18herself to heal a little every time she sees it. She wisely knows that healing takes time and support . It has become her19for healing ,20forgetting the joy and love she experienced with her laughter.

By the third year of teaching I’d begun to expect Christmas break more for the school holiday and less for the excitement of the children. I was teaching fourth grade and my students had made me 1. I just had to get through one of the hardest days of the school year.
The morning bell rang. I walked2through the cold into the overly heated school building. Twenty-two smiling faces3me at the school bus stop. I forced myself to4their smiles. Back into the classroom, they5, comparing plans for the6. I had to remove one student from each arm7I could take a seat at my desk for my morning duties. Before I could find my roll book(点名册) my desk was covered with8and gifts followed by a9of “Merry Christmas” wishes.
“Oh, thank you,” I must have 10a million times. Each gift was truly special to me, except my 11mood(情绪). It was kind of them to12me. After a while, I heard a small nervous13say my name. I looked up to see Brandon standing14by my desk, holding a small, round gift. “This is for you.”
“Thank you, Sweetheart.” I laid it on my desk with the others.
“Um, could you15it now?”
I gently tore at the paper and tape. “16,” he said, “it’s breakable.” Slowly I opened a small, green Christmas tree ornament(装饰物), complete with a hook already17. It dawned on me what he had done. Then a nearby student said that he just pulled that off his own tree. I tried to keep my18back.
Later that day, I sat19the ornament in my hands. Was I really so important to this child that he had searched for something to give me? Now every year as I20pull a green Christmas ball from my ornament box, I remember the deep influence my students have on me.

It was at a concert that I happened to find David. He was holding his head at a strange1as if he were staring down at something. Then the truth2me. He was blind. The last thing he remembers seeingwas his daughter being born. Then the whole world went3.
Bad luck is no stranger to this 44-year-old man. His mother died of cancer, and his weak father had to411-year-old David to the5of the state.
Things seemed always to go for6. Two years ago, his beloved guide dog pulled him out of the pathof a truck. David was not7. The dog died.
But David does not feel sorry for himself. “These are just little obstacles(障碍困难) you have to8in your life,” he said.
He has to make a daily two-hour trip to his working place—the X-ray department of an9room. It was a hard job to10by. Before he got it, David was determined to escape the workshop run by the Lighthouse, an organization11to helping blind people. He wanted a job of developing X-ray film, a job 12everyone, not just he, must work in the dark, including those with 13eyesight. The Lighthouse called many hospitals, with no result, 14they offered to pay his first three months’ salary.
David works alone in a dark room that15of chemicals. He doesn’t wear gloves. Otherwise, he could not feel.16this is an emergency room, lives can be put either17or out of danger. His director says he trusts him 100 percent.
He makes $20,000 a year. But his motivation goes 18money. “By working I can realize my own19. That’s what really counts!” he said.
What a shining example for us to20!

I truly hope that at the end of this short essay(短文) you will know how to learn English.
I was born in Somalia, and Italian is my mother tongue. 1enough, soon after I arrived in London when I was 17, I was admitted to a sixth-form college. I found caring (体贴的) teachers there, who2taught me English. This, I think, was a(n)3 factor(因素) that encouraged me to learn the language. The most important thing,4, is to work hard. So those of you who don’t have such good teachers should not5. When I was in London, I6 myself to English learning as I 7to go to university very much. Mastering the language was the only8 to achieve my goal.
Now I have9 my master’s degree from Oxford University. Looking back, I10 I was quite innocent (天真的),for I never imagined learning English was going to be so much11. The more fluent I become, the12 the language became. One can master it only13 years of tireless efforts(努力).
Some basic 14which I would give to people who are interested in learning the language are:
1. Buy a good dictionary.15 English learners use their dictionaries all the time.
2.16 English newspapers. Don’t forget to17 the new words in your dictionary.
3. Listen to the radio 18watching TV as listening to the radio helps you more.
4. Talk, talk and talk to 19at anytime and anywhere.
And even though at times it may be embarrassing(尴尬的) to make20,you will finally correct them and remember them. Soon you will start to become fluent.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought1. My complaints, even self-justified(自有道理)2, were always landing on3ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end with their4into tears. I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to5my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time tidying their rooms. On their desks, in plain6, I left the cards: “Dear Bill(the other card was7to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.”8arriving back, the children were9excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy10for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and11asking them to play a certain violin12. Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas13.
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little14: “If you can finish your homework and go over your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in15of well-done jobs the day16.
17I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its (贴条). The bathroom mirror became the18centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be19.
We all benefited from and20the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

A thousand years ago Hong Kong was covered by a thick forest like the forests we now find in Malaysia and Thailand. As more and more 1 came to live in Hong Kong, these trees were cut down and burnt. Now there is no forest left, 2 there are still some areas covered with trees. We call these 3.
Elephants, tigers, monkeys and many other animals used to live in the 4 forests of Hong Kong, and there were even crocodiles in the 5 and along the coast. When people came to live in Hong Kong, the animals began to 6 out. Early farmers grew rice and kept pigs and chickens in the valleys.
They 7 the trees and burnt them. They needed fires to keep themselves 8 in the winter, to cook their food, and to keep away from dangerous animals. Elephants quickly disappeared because there was not enough 9 for them. So did most of the wolves, and tigers. Monkeys, squirrels and many other animals soon died out in the same 10.
You might think that there are 11 any animals in Hong Kong, except in the 12. You might think there can’t be any wild animals in such a 13 place with so many cars and buildings. But there is 14 a good deal of countryside in Hong Kong and New Territories, and there are still about thirty-six different kinds of animals living there.
One of the most interesting of Hong Kong’s 15 is the barking deer. They are beautiful little creatures with rich, brown coat and a white patch under the tail. They look like deer but they are much 16. They are less than two feet high. The male barking deer has two small horns but the female has none. They make a 17 rather like a dog barking.
Barking deer live in thick shrub(灌木) country and are very good at 18. They eat grass and shrubs, mainly in the very early morning and late afternoon and evening. This is when you are most likely to see one but you will need to be very quiet and to have very 19eyes. In Hong Kong the barking deer has only one 20 ---- man. Although it is illegal, people hunt and trap these harmless little animals. As a result there are now not many left. There are a few on Hong Kong Island but none in the New Territories.

It was raining. I went into a cafe and asked for a coffee. 1I was waiting for my drink, I realized there were other people in the place, but I sensed 2. I saw their bodies, but I couldn’t feel their souls3 their souls belonged to the 4 .
I stood up and walked between the tables. When I came to the biggest computer, I saw a thin, small man 5 in front of it. “ I’m Steve, ” he finally answered after I asked him a couple of times what his name was. “ I can’t talk with you. I’m 6,” he said. He was chatting online and, 7 , he was playing a computer game –a war game. I was 8 .
Why didn’t Steve want to talk with me? I tried 9to speak to that computer geek(怪人), 10 not a word came out of his mouth. I touched his shoulder, but no reaction(反应). I was 11 . I put my hand in front of the monitor, and he started to shout “12! ”
I took a few steps back, wondering if all those people in the cafe were looking at me. I 13 , and saw nobody showed any interest.
14, I realized that the people there were having a nice conversation with their machines, not with people. They were more 15 having a relationship with the 16 , particularly Steve. I wouldn’t want to17 the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines 18 with people.
I was worried and sank in my thoughts. I didn’t even  19 that the coffee was bad, 20 Steve didn’t notice there was a person next to him.
