When Mike told me he was leaving I felt like a vase which had just broken. There were pieces of me all over the tidy floor. He kept talking, telling me why he was leaving,1it was for the best, I could do better, it was his2and not mine. I had heard it before many times and yet somehow was still hurt; perhaps one cannot3such pain.
He left and I tried to4my life. I filled the kettle (水壶), put it on to boil, took out my old red cup and5the coffee powder falling into the bone china. Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning, I6not to hear it. That’s what Mike’s leaving had been like, sudden and with a(n)7end. I would rather just 8in uncertainty than have things finished. I laughed at myself. Just about a cup of coffee, I must be getting 9.
And yet it was a young woman who10back at me from the mirror, a young woman full of11and hope, a young woman with bright eyes just waiting to see the world.12, there are more important things. More important than13, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closing on the whole Mike experience.
He didn’t14my dreams as I feared that night.15, I am flying far across fields and woods,16on those below me. I fly free until I meet another bird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some17that there is a bird out there for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a18, but there is someone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken19again and realize that I have gathered myself back together, what Mike has is 20a little part of my time in earth, a little understanding of my physical being. He has merely, a little piece of me.

Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I 1 asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so 2. He had his wisdom teeth removed. Then the young man asked me why I 3 seemed to be so cheerful.
His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before: “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about 4 you want to approach life that day,” I said. “I choose to be cheerful.”
“Let me give you an example. 5 teaching here, I also teach out at the community college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. One day, I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I 6 the freeway and turned onto College Drive, only another quarter mile ahead to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine 7 turn over. So I put my flashers on, grabbed my books, and marched down the road to the college.”
8 getting there I called AAA and arranged for a tow truck to meet me at my car after class. The secretary asked me what had happened. ‘This is my lucky day,’ I replied, smiling.”
“ ‘Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?’ She was 9. ‘What do you mean?’ ’’ “I live 17 miles from here.” I replied. “My car 10 have broken down 11 along the freeway. It didn’t. 12, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, 13 walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class.”
“The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she 14. I smiled back and headed for class.” So ended my story.
I scanned the sixty faces in my class. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be 15. Somehow, my story had touched them.

I grew up poor — living with six brothers, three sisters and my mother. We had little money, but plenty of love and 1. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still 2 a dream.
My dream was 3. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour baseball and 4anything that moved on the field. I was also 5: my high school coach was John, who not only 6me, but also taught me how to believe in myself. He 7me the difference between having a dream and showing conviction (信念). One particular incident with coach John changed my life forever.
A friend 8me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — money for a new bike, new clothes and the 9of savings for a house for my mother. Then I realized I would have to 10up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell John I wouldn’t be playing.
When I told John, he was as 11as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said, “Your 12days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.” I stood before him with my head 13, trying to think of the words that would 14to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his 15 in me.
“Well,” he asked, “is $3.5 an hour the 16of a dream?”
That simple question made 17to me the difference between 18something right now and having a goal. I devoted myself in sports that summer and 19the year I was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and 20 a $ 20,000 contract(合同). Later, I bought my mother the house of my dream!

I was 7on a busy road with cars driving past without a person in sight. I had no 8when the next bus would come, 9when a bus did come by, I 10got on. I told the bus driver where I wanted to go and he said that I had caught the 11bus, but he let me stay on. After he had finished his scheduled bus route, he 12to help me out. I gratefully showed him my little hand-drawn map but 13did not help much.
He finally 14me off at a main road to catch a different bus and was 15that he could not help me more. After a few minutes of walking, I noticed a bus pull up beside me. It was the16 bus driver. He explained that he didn’t want to leave me there 17. He sent out a call and someone radioed back, saying that the bus I needed to catch was about ten minutes away. At last I made it to the dinner party 18I was over an hour late.
I am forever thankful for the 19that this bus driver had for me. His act of kindness left a20 on my heart.

Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter, where some beautiful ties were on9. "They are10 silk," the shop assistant told her with a smile trying to11 her to buy one. But Edith knew from past12 that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.
She moved on slowly and then, quite by chance,13 where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some fine pipes on sale and the14 were very beautiful. Edith did not hesitate for long, although her father15 smoked a pipe once in a while, she believed this was16 to please him.
When she got home, with her small but17 present hidden in her handbag, it was time for supper and her parents were already18 table. Her mother was in great19. "Your father has at last decided to stop smoking," she told her daughter happily. Edith was so20 that she could not say a single word.

There is one thing better than making a new friend, and that is keeping an old one.
——Elmer G Letterman
Two years ago my family moved. The day we left, my best friend and I cried together in my1bedroom for hours. I was miserable during the five-hour car ride to my new house. Life was2.
On the first day of school, I called my best friend to tell her how it had gone. Then on Halloween, I sent her a letter and a picture of my new friends and me.
Finally, she wrote me a letter. It wasn’t3a letter—a piece of paper saying, “Best friends forever”.
When I finally got her e-mail address, I e-mailed her the4letter I have ever written. After the third e-mail with no5, my messages grew shorter and shorter.6each passing day, my7grew.I never received a reply from her.
Mom said that I8try calling my other friends, and that I didn’t need to always call her.9my best friend, the girl that I had known from my childhood?
My first10was automatic.“No way!” But after five more e-mail messages, I started to consider what my mom had11.Every night for about a week, I stayed up in bed,12, “Should I keep trying or...?”
The way I looked at it was that: if I’m her best friend, she’d13a minute to push a few buttons on the phone, or type a short “hello” on the computer. To me, keeping in touch is part of being a friend and it is important. To her, it really didn’t seem to14.
After two years of15, I finally got a phone call from her—my best friend. It was a big16.She told me how sorry she was for not writing, and about how busy she had been. I forgot about everything that had happened and how annoyed I had been with her.I17her.I guess keeping in touch just isn’t her18.
I have realized true friends never really lose their special19.Even after two years, it felt like we had just talked yesterday.
Now she and I write regularly—or at least she tries to,20she tries hard.
What more could a friend ask for?

It was like a kind of free-form jazz, and she taught me to improvise (即兴发挥), and to add ingredients according to6.It's no wonder that my media business has grown so amazingly; I'm not7anyone else's recipe.
When I was in the ninth grade,my mom decided she wanted something8being a mother and a wife. She wanted to start her own9 .But in order to accomplish this, she had no10but to get a loan. It all happened in11motion. The bank manager12my father call him,but my mom said stubbornly,"Why? It's my loan." "Well,I can't give you a loan unless he co-signs," replied the manager. But my mom didn't13hope,and responded sincerely,"I see. Then can you do me a favor,if he does? I' d14it if you'd put together the paperwork quickly. I need a shop in order to support my family."
Moved by her15,the manager agreed to do as she asked. So16was I that I included that day into my DNA.
Through her influence,I've become someone who17what she wants until she gets it. If something or someone is in my way,I18how to overcome the difficulties. It's really that19. It's not about getting angry. It's about getting what you want, being very, competitive, but also extremely20. I learned this in the ninth grade from my mom, and it burned itself into my brain.
