I grew up in a community called Estepona. I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him into a 1village called Mijas, on condition that I took the car in to be2nearby garage. I readily accepted. I drove Dad into Mijas, and 3to pick him up at 4 pm, then dropped off the car at the4. With several hours to spare, 1 went to a theater.5, when the last movie finished, it was six. 1 was two hours late!
I knew Dad would be angry if he 6I’d been watching movies. So I decided not to tell him the truth. When I 7there I apologized for being late, and told him I’d 8as quickly as I could, but that the car had needed a major repairs. I’11 never forget the 9he gave me. “I’m disappointed you 10you have to lie to me, Jason.” Dad looked at me again. “When you didn’t 11, I called the garage to ask if there were any 12, and they told me you hadn’t yet picked up the car.” I felt 13as I weakly told him the real reason. A 14passed through Dad as he listened attentively. “I’m angry with 15. I realize I’ve failed as a father. I’m going to walk home now and think seriously about 16I’ve gone wrong all these years.” “But Dad, it’s 18 miles!” My protests and apologies were17. Dad walked home that day. I drove behind him,18him all the way, but he walked silently.
Seeing Dad in so much 19and emotional pain was my most painful experience. However, it was 20the most successful lesson. I have never lied since.

It was the district sports meet. My foot still hadn't healed(痊愈)from a(n)1injury. I had 2whether or not I should attend the meet. But there I was,3for the 3,000-meter run.

You know, I only weighed 135 pounds. Due to my7 at being pulled off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and8to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I went on at a rather 9 rate up the building.
Near the third floor, I met the barrel10, which made my collarbone(锁骨)broken,11 only slightly, I didn’t stop. At approximately(大约)the same time, the barrel12 the ground, and the bottom fell out of the barrel.13the bricks, the barrel now weighed about 50 pounds. I refer you again to my weight of 135 pounds. 14you might imagine, I began a rapid down.
Also near the 15 floor, I met the barrel coming up, which made my legs broken. The encounter(相遇)with the 16 slowed me enough to reduce my17when I fell onto the pile of bricks, and18, only three vertebrae(椎骨)were broken. You are near the front line of a battle. Around you shells are exploding; people are shooting from a house behind you. What are you doing there? You aren’t a soldier. You aren’t 1carrying a gun. You’re standing in front of a 2and you’re telling the TV 3what is happening.
It’s all in a day’s work for a war reporter, and it can be very 4. In the first two years of the 5 in former Yugoslavia(前南斯拉夫), 28 reporters and photographers were killed. Hundreds more were 6. What kind of people put themselves in danger to 7 pictures to our TV screens and 8 to our newspapers? Why do they do it?
“I think it’s every young journalist’s 9to be a foreign reporter,” says Michael Nicholson, “that’s 10 you find the excitement. So when the first opportunity comes, you take it 11 it is a war.”
But there are moments of 12. Jeremy Bowen says, “Yes, when you’re lying on the ground and bullet(子弹) are flying 13 your ears, you think: ‘What am I doing here? I’m not going to do this again.’ But that feeling 14 after a while and when the next war starts, you’11 be 15.”
“None of us believes that we’re going to 16,” adds Michael. But he always 17 a lucky charm(护身符) with him. It was given to him by his wife for his first war. It’s a card which says “Take care of yourself.” Does he ever think about dying? “Oh, 18, and every time it happens you look to the sky and say to God, ‘If you get me out of this, I 19 I’11 never do it again.’ You can almost hear God 20, because you know he doesn’t believe you.”

There was a very special teacher who made a far –reaching difference in my life
Fall ,1959,the first day of class at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School was about begin .“Who”,I asked a senior , “is Mrs McNamara,my 10th grade English teacher?”He just 1and said something about my being in 2Soon ,I understood what he meant. Mrs. McNamara had a pattern of 3that she repeated again and again. We would have a literature reading task for4. The next day ,when we came to class, there would be two or three topics on the blackboard 5 to the homework reading. We were6to write an in –class essay about one of the topics. The following day ,she would 7thd corrected and graded essays and each person would be called 8 to stand in front of the class and to 9 his\her essay. The class were required to criticize(评论)that essay, 10the grade of everyone in class would be reduced
The first time that I11her read–write–criticize method, I had not 12to do the homework and had written something without knowing what it meant. 13the extreme embarrassment I suffered, standing before my classmates, 14myself. No one laughed at me, no one would be 15enough ,or foolish enough, to do that in Mrs. McNamara’s class. The embarrassment came from 16and along with it came a strong 17not to let it happen again
Mrs. McNamara kept all of our written work in files, it was easy to see the 18in writing that had occurred. What was not so easy to see was the inner transformation that had taken place, at least for me. What Mrs. McNamar19me to do was to see myself as others see me and, having done that, I could improve myself. And I 20. Thank you, Mrs. McNamara.

A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting( attracting) apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater,1 a bar of chocolate if given the choice,2, as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the3 he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
He stood on tiptoe,4as high as he could, but even at his tallest5he was unable to touch it. He began to6 up and down, as high as he could, at the7 of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. Still it remained out of8.
Not giving up, he thought, if only he had something to9 on. His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to 10the things inside, like his lunch box, pencil box, pencil case, and Gameboy. Looking11 , he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or,12 luck, even a ladder, but it was a tidy neighbourhood and there was nothing he could use.
He had tried everything he could think to do. 13seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk14. At first, he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his15 , and how he really wanted that apple. The more he16like this, the more unhappy he became.
17 , the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t get what he wanted. He started to say to himself, “ This isn’t18. I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling sad as well. There is19 more I can do to get the apple— that is unchangeable —but we are supposed to be able to20our feelings. If that is the case, what can I do to feel better.

I believe in miracles because I’ve seen so many of them. One day,a patient was referred to me who was one hundred and two years old.“There’s a1 in my upper jaw,”she said.“I told my own dentist it’s nothing, but he 2 I come to see you.”
Her eighty-year-old son accompanied her.He would 3 to add something, but she stopped him.She wanted to tell everything hereslf.I found a large cancer that spread over much of the 4 of her mouth.A careful examination later 5 that it was a particularly bad sort of cancer.
During her next appointment,I explained to her the 6 of the problem. She clasped my hand in hers and said,“I know you’re worried about me,but I’m just 7.”
I thought otherwise. After considerable 8 on my part, and kindness on her part because she wanted to 9 me,she agreed to have me refer her to a cancer surgeon. She saw him,but as I expected, 10 treatment.
About six months later she retarned to my office, still energetic and 11.
“How are you?”I asked.
“I’m just fine, honey,”she responded 12 high spirits.“When can I get started on fixing my dentures(假牙)?”
Surprised to see her at all,I answered 13 ,“Let me take a look in your mouth and we’ll see about it.”
I couldn’t believe my eyes. The cancer that had 14 nearly the entire roof of her mouth was gone—only one small area of redness 15.
I had read of such things happening, but had 16 seen them with my own eyes. That was my first miracle.Since then I’ve seen many others, because they keep getting 17 to see.In fact, miracles are daily events for me now.And people are a miracle,18 through them we have a chance to know ourselves and to 19 the miracles of one another.
Since my first miracle,I’ve come to understand that the time and place for a miracle is 20we choose to find it.

For ten years,my courageous mother had fought, but none of the operations or other3had been successful. Finally, she became totally4unable to speak, walk, eat or dress on her own.As she grew closer and closer to death,my baby grew closer and closer to life.My biggest fear was that their lives would never5she and my baby could never6each other.
My fear seemed7.A few weeks before my8date,mother went into a deep coma(昏迷)and doctors said she would never9.So we brought her to her own house. As often as I could,I10her about the baby moving inside me.I hoped that somehow11inside,she knew.
On February 3rd,at about the same time my labor(分娩)started at hospital, the nurse at her house told me the12news:Morn opened her eyes, sitting up and smiling.I asked for the phone to be13to Morn’S ear.
“Morn,you’II have a new grandchild!”
“Yes!Yes!I know!”
Four words。four 14 and beautiful words!
For the next tWO miracle weeks after I brought Jacob home, she gave US joy, smiling, holding Jacob and speaking to the family in complete15Then she quietly slipped back into a coma16and was finally free17the pain forever.
Memories of my son’s birth will always be18for me,but it was at this time that I learned an important truth about living.19both joy and sorrow are lasting only a short time, and often intertwined(相互纠缠),love has the20to face both. And love can last forever.

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would1the peace and quiet, watch the water rush2and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of 3in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees 4under pressure from the wind and watch them5gracefully to their original position after the wind had6.
When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in7to a person this word means the ability to readily8from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's9.
Have you ever felt like you are at your10point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
During the11you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained,12exhausted and you most likely stood 13physical symptoms.
Life is a14of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy 15that take you close to your breaking point, bend, 16don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
A17of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal (考验). With 18for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to19if the final result is worth having.
If life gets20and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!
