I grew up in a community called Estepona. I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him into a
1
village called Mijas, on condition that I took the car in to be
2
nearby garage. I readily accepted. I drove Dad into Mijas, and
3
to pick him up at 4 pm, then dropped off the car at the
4
. With several hours to spare, 1 went to a theater.
5
, when the last movie finished, it was six. 1 was two hours late!
I knew Dad would be angry if he
6
I’d been watching movies. So I decided not to tell him the truth. When I
7
there I apologized for being late, and told him I’d
8
as quickly as I could, but that the car had needed a major repairs. I’11 never forget the
9
he gave me. “I’m disappointed you
10
you have to lie to me, Jason.” Dad looked at me again. “When you didn’t
11
, I called the garage to ask if there were any
12
, and they told me you hadn’t yet picked up the car.” I felt
13
as I weakly told him the real reason. A
14
passed through Dad as he listened attentively. “I’m angry with
15
. I realize I’ve failed as a father. I’m going to walk home now and think seriously about
16
I’ve gone wrong all these years.” “But Dad, it’s 18 miles!” My protests and apologies were
17
. Dad walked home that day. I drove behind him,
18
him all the way, but he walked silently.
Seeing Dad in so much
19
and emotional pain was my most painful experience. However, it was
20
the most successful lesson. I have never lied since.

It was the district sports meet. My foot still hadn't healed(痊愈)from a(n)

When I finished, I heard a cheer--

While my friends went away to their universities in great delight, I restarted my senior high school life. My spirits
1
at the prospect of starting all over again.
2
by strange classmates, I felt as though I was in a maze(迷宫)and felt
3
for my-self. There were some complex feelings in my mind. I was frightened, nervous and lonely.
To make
4
worse, I recalled my failure again and again,
5
put more pressure on me than I could bear. As a result, I was always feeling
6
during class.
One of my teachers noticed my depression and one day he asked me to come to his office, where he told me about his
7
towards life. He said we might
8
from making mistakes, but it’s important to model ourselves into people we
9
. All the growing
10
and the embarrassing things we
11
are parts of the process. We never stop
12
, so learn from it and keep up your spirits up! If you are optimistic, things you want may
13
to you!
14
feelings rushed through me. I
15
saw the sun shining again when I stepped out of his office.
With the teacher’s help, I finally
16
my depression. From then on, I no longer
17
my head but began smiling at my classmates. I put up my hand
18
in class and tried to answer the teacher’s questions correctly.
I
19
have a thirst to go to my dream university,
20
I’m not afraid of failure because I can benefit from it.

One day, I was working alone on the roof of a new six-story building. When I completed my work, I discovered that I had about 500 pounds of bircks left over!
1
carry the bricks down by hand I decided to lower them by a pulley(滑车), which fortunately was
2
to the side of the building on the sixth floor.
Fastening the rope at the ground level, I went up to the roof and
3
the bricks into a barrel (桶). Then I went back to the
4
and untied the rope,
5
it tightly to insure a
6
fall of the 500 punds of bricks. You know, I only weighed 135 pounds. Due to my
7
at being pulled off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and
8
to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I went on at a rather
9
rate up the building.
Near the third floor, I met the barrel
10
, which made my collarbone(锁骨)broken,
11
only slightly, I didn’t stop. At approximately(大约)the same time, the barrel
12
the ground, and the bottom fell out of the barrel.
13
the bricks, the barrel now weighed about 50 pounds. I refer you again to my weight of 135 pounds.
14
you might imagine, I began a rapid down.
Also near the
15
floor, I met the barrel coming up, which made my legs broken. The encounter(相遇)with the
16
slowed me enough to reduce my
17
when I fell onto the pile of bricks, and
18
, only three vertebrae(椎骨)were broken. However, as I
19
there on the bricks in pain, unable to move, and
20
the barrel six stories above, I again lost my presence of mind. I let go of the rope!

You are near the front line of a battle. Around you shells are exploding; people are shooting from a house behind you. What are you doing there? You aren’t a soldier. You aren’t

you find the excitement. So when the first opportunity comes, you take it

it is a war.”
But there are moments of

There was a very special teacher who made a far –reaching difference in my life
Fall ,1959,the first day of class at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School was about begin .“Who”,I asked a senior , “is Mrs McNamara,my 10th grade English teacher?”He just
1
and said something about my being in
2
Soon ,I understood what he meant. Mrs. McNamara had a pattern of
3
that she repeated again and again. We would have a literature reading task for
4
. The next day ,when we came to class, there would be two or three topics on the blackboard
5
to the homework reading. We were
6
to write an in –class essay about one of the topics. The following day ,she would
7
thd corrected and graded essays and each person would be called
8
to stand in front of the class and to
9
his\her essay. The class were required to criticize(评论)that essay,
10
the grade of everyone in class would be reduced
The first time that I
11
her read–write–criticize method, I had not
12
to do the homework and had written something without knowing what it meant.
13
the extreme embarrassment I suffered, standing before my classmates,
14
myself. No one laughed at me, no one would be
15
enough ,or foolish enough, to do that in Mrs. McNamara’s class. The embarrassment came from
16
and along with it came a strong
17
not to let it happen again
Mrs. McNamara kept all of our written work in files, it was easy to see the
18
in writing that had occurred. What was not so easy to see was the inner transformation that had taken place, at least for me. What Mrs. McNamar
19
me to do was to see myself as others see me and, having done that, I could improve myself. And I
20
. Thank you, Mrs. McNamara.

A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting( attracting) apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater,
1
a bar of chocolate if given the choice,
2
, as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the
3
he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
He stood on tiptoe,
4
as high as he could, but even at his tallest
5
he was unable to touch it. He began to
6
up and down, as high as he could, at the
7
of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. Still it remained out of
8
.
Not giving up, he thought, if only he had something to
9
on. His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to
10
the things inside, like his lunch box, pencil box, pencil case, and Gameboy. Looking
11
, he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or,
12
luck, even a ladder, but it was a tidy neighbourhood and there was nothing he could use.
He had tried everything he could think to do.
13
seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk
14
. At first, he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his
15
, and how he really wanted that apple. The more he
16
like this, the more unhappy he became.
17
, the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t get what he wanted. He started to say to himself, “ This isn’t
18
. I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling sad as well. There is
19
more I can do to get the apple— that is unchangeable —but we are supposed to be able to
20
our feelings. If that is the case, what can I do to feel better.

I believe in miracles because I’ve seen so many of them. One day,a patient was referred to me who was one hundred and two years old.“There’s a
1
in my upper jaw,”she said.“I told my own dentist it’s nothing, but he
2
I come to see you.”
Her eighty-year-old son accompanied her.He would
3
to add something, but she stopped him.She wanted to tell everything hereslf.I found a large cancer that spread over much of the
4
of her mouth.A careful examination later
5
that it was a particularly bad sort of cancer.
During her next appointment,I explained to her the
6
of the problem. She clasped my hand in hers and said,“I know you’re worried about me,but I’m just
7
.”
I thought otherwise.After considerable
8
on my part, and kindness on her part because she wanted to
9
me,she agreed to have me refer her to a cancer surgeon. She saw him,but as I expected,
10
treatment.
About six months later she retarned to my office, still energetic and
11
.
“How are you?”I asked.
“I’m just fine,honey,”she responded
12
high spirits.“When can I get started on fixing my dentures(假牙)?”
Surprised to see her at all,I answered
13
,“Let me take a look in your mouth and we’ll see about it.”
I couldn’t believe my eyes. The cancer that had
14
nearly the entire roof of her mouth was gone—only one small area of redness
15
.
I had read of such things happening, but had
16
seen them with my own eyes. That was my first miracle.Since then I’ve seen many others, because they keep getting
17
to see.In fact, miracles are daily events for me now.And people are a miracle,
18
through them we have a chance to know ourselves and to
19
the miracles of one another.
Since my first miracle,I’ve come to understand that the time and place for a miracle is
20
we choose to find it.

I can honestly say it was the best of times and the worst of times.I was joyfully
1
my first Child at the same time that my once-energetic mother was
2
her battle with a brain cancer.
For ten years,my courageous mother had fought, but none of the operations or other
3
had been successful.Finally,she became totally
4
unable to speak, walk, eat or dress on her own.As she grew closer and closer to death,my baby grew closer and closer to life.My biggest fear was that their lives would never
5
she and my baby could never
6
each other.
My fear seemed
7
.A few weeks before my
8
date, mother went into a deep coma(昏迷)and doctors said she would never
9
.So we brought her to her own house. As often as I could,I
10
her about the baby moving inside me.I hoped that somehow
11
inside,she knew.
On February 3rd,at about the same time my labor(分娩)started at hospital, the nurse at her house told me the
12
news:Morn opened her eyes, sitting up and smiling.I asked for the phone to be
13
to Morn’S ear.
“Morn,you’II have a new grandchild!”
“Yes!Yes!I know!”
Four words。four
14
and beautiful words!
For the next tWO miracle weeks after I brought Jacob home, she gave US joy, smiling, holding Jacob and speaking to the family in complete
15
Then she quietly slipped back into a coma
16
and was finally free
17
the pain forever.
Memories of my son’s birth will always be
18
for me,but it was at this time that I learned an important truth about living.
19
both joy and sorrow are lasting only a short time, and often intertwined(相互纠缠),love has the
20
to face both. And love can last forever.

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would
1
the peace and quiet, watch the water rush
2
and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of
3
in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees
4
under pressure from the wind and watch them
5
gracefully to their original position after the wind had
6
.
When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in
7
to a person this word means the ability to readily
8
from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's
9
.
Have you ever felt like you are at your
10
point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
During the
11
you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained,
12
exhausted and you most likely stood
13
physical symptoms.
Life is a
14
of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy
15
that take you close to your breaking point, bend,
16
don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
A
17
of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal (考验). With
18
for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to
19
if the final result is worth having.
If life gets
20
and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!
