Once, there lived a young short monk in a temple on top of a hill, caring for his vegetable garden. He had one daily task of carryingtwo1of water up the hill from a cold stream. Rain or shine, he never 2a day carrying water up the mountain to the temple. One day, a thin and tall 3monk passed the temple and the young monk invited him to4. Since they would share the water, they went down the mountain together to fetch water. But the carrying pole is only5enough for one bucket. The two monks were unable to6the shared load on their carrying pole without shaking the contents of the two buckets all over the short monk. They7to retain(保留) only a small8of water that the young monk would have carried on his own, not mentioning to9the garden. When the young monk began to see his guest as10, the other monk began to see his host as unreasonable. Then a11monk came. The12of the third monk urged everyone to expect that someone else would take on the chore. As a result, no one fetched water though everybody was13. One night, a rat jumped and knocked the candleholder(烛台), leading to a devastating(毁坏性的)14in the temple. The three monks finally united together to put out the fire. Since then they understood the old saying "unity is strength" and begin to live a 15life. The temple never lacks water again.

When we visit another country, differences in music and dance are1some of the first things that we notice. Every culture has2its own types of music and dance, which are very different from those of other societies.
Each type of music usually has a distinctive rhythm and a special sound,3on the kinds of instruments that are used to produce it. The most common type of instruments are4instruments, such as guitars and violins; wind instruments, including horns and flutes. Many different kinds of musical sounds5be created by using different combinations of instruments.
The human voice is a very special kind of instrument,6it can produce a great number of different sounds with different7, ranging from loud to soft. Singing is very popular in most cultures because it allows us to8words and ideas with music.
Societies coordinate body movements with musical rhythms to create9. Sometimes people dance for fun and individual expression. Dances can also be used to10ideas to an audience. Hawaiian dancers,11, use arm and hand movements to express the meaning of a song. In the same way, many societies use dances in religious ceremonies12to tell about important events.
Music and dance are passed from one13to another and thus become a permanent part of the society and14culture. Of course, as cultures come15contact with each other, the music and dance of one society may be accepted by other societies, or the different styles may be combined to16a new kind of music or dance. Some Latin American music, for example, has taken17from Indian cultures and mixed them with those from European and African cultures.18, popular music from England and the US can be heard in countries19the world,20it has had an influence on musical tastes, especially among young people.

A farmer had some puppies(小狗)to1. He painted a sign advertising the puppies and 2 nailing (钉)it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, a little boy came to him.

The little boy’ eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their10to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.11another little ball appeared; this one noticeably smaller. Then in a somewhat12manner the little pup began hobbling(蹒跚) toward the others, doing its best to13.
“I want that one,” the little boy said,14to the smallest one. The farmer said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you15these other dogs would.”
With that the little boy16back from the fence, and began17up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he exposed a steel support running down both sides of his leg18itself to a specially made19. Many years ago when the world was a simpler place there lived a shoemaker. He used1 silk and soft leather(皮革) to make the greatest shoes. Colorful shoes lined the shelves of his store.
One little girl, Rachel, often looked through the2 into the store. One day while Rachel was looking again, the shoemaker3 at her side. “Well, dear, which shoes would you take?” he said, smiling.
Rachel was4 as she hadn’t noticed the little man. “Oh! I …I was just5,” Rachel said. “I can’t afford them and I would never take anything that doesn't belong to me.”
The shoemaker said, “I meant to give you a pair as a(n)6 .” Rachel stared at the shoemaker. A small pointed(尖尖的) ear could be seen underneath(在…底下) his hat. The guy7 Rachel’s curious gaze(凝视) and fixed his hat tightly over his ear8.
“Why don't you wear a pair of your own beautiful shoes?” Rachel questioned him, smiling.
“I am always working and have no need of9 shoes,” he explained.
Rachel’s smile10. “I have no need of good shoes either,” Rachel said in a sad voice and limped (一瘸一拐地走) away.
A few days later, Rachel was walking past the shoe shop when the shoemaker waved her into the shop. Looking around, Rachel said, “You have every color of the rainbow here.”
The shoemaker said, “They are the colors of the rainbow, Rachel.”11 a drawer(抽屉), he took out the most beautiful pair of shoes Rachel had ever seen. The shoemaker placed the shoes onto her feet. “Take a12, Rachel,” he said.
“I …I can’t,” Rachel said with a tear.
“Yes, Rachel, you can,” the shoemaker13.
Rachel stood up staight. Deliberately(小心翼翼地) she took a14, followed by another and another. “I can do it. I can do it,” she said, walking easily across the floor, not limping at all.
The shoemaker laughed15 and said, “I told you they were magic shoes…”

On the IraqSyria border,a pack of wild dogs circled American soldiers for food. The leader of the pack was a grayandwhite dog.The soldiers called him Nubs.Nubs was shaking and1 able to stand.Marine major Brian Dennis looked closer and saw that there was a knife wound2 his chest.
Dennis couldn’t stand seeing the dog3.He and his men immediately treated the wound, and gave Nubs medicine.Nubs4but was still in pain. The next day,the team had to5.Ten days later,Dennis’s unit was back, and so was Nubs.He was still6,but the men fed him and played with him.
Before long the unit once again7an outpost (前哨) 70 miles away.Nubs, slowly but determinedly,8them far into the trackless wasteland until the men lost9of him.Two days later, beyond Dennis’s10,he saw Nubs just outside the outpost. The dog had tracked him across 70 miles of frozen desert to11with the friend who had saved his life. From then on Nubs and the men slept in the same place, and ran around in the same ruins.
Until an order came down from above that they were not12to have pets,Dennis13to make sure the dog would continue to live the14life.So he quickly raised $4,000 from his family and friends to fly Nubs to15.
A month later, when Dennis and the dog were16in California,at first Nubs didn’t recognize the guy.17within minutes, the dog jumped into Dennis’s arms, jumping up again and again to18 his friend’s face.
A little19and concern in the middle of war will not save a violent world. But small stories, like the story of a soldier and a dog, hold a promise of a(n)20world.

Recently, I stopped by a convenience store to get a newspaper and a bottle of drink. The young woman at the check-out counter (柜台) said, “That’11 be five dollars 1, please.” She then 2 down at the paper I was 3 and said, “I’m sick and 4 all this negative(消极的) stuff on the front 5. I want to read some 6 news for a change.” She then said, “In fact, I think someone should just 7 a Good News newspaper—a paper with wonderful, inspirational(鼓舞人心的) 8 about people overcoming difficulty and doing good things for 9. I’d buy one every day!” She then 10 me for coming in and said, “Maybe we’11 get some good news,” and she laughed. She made my day.
The following day after my business appointments, I 11 the same store again to 12 bottled water and a piece of newspaper, but a 13 young lady was behind the counter. As I checked out, I said, “Good afternoon,” and handed her my 14. She said nothing — not a word, not a smile or not a gesture. She just handed me my change and 15 a negative tone (语气) ordered, “Next!”
It hit me right between the eyes: Two people, the same age; 16 made me feel great, and the other, well, made me feel that I had inconvenienced(给…带来不便) her by 17.
Every morning, you should ask 18 this important question: “Who do I want to be today? ‘The Grouch(不高兴的人)’ or ‘The Good News Girl’”? Your answer will do great good to 19 the joy and happiness that you will experience in your 20.
