Tired and hungry, two boys walked painfully and difficultly into a big city on October 16, on their feet that had just carried them 300 kilometers.
For nine days they lived like old-fashioned travelers,
1
somewhere new to sleep every night as they walked from one place to another. The boys slept in tents and
2
a six-yuan daily plan. “I learned more in those nine days than I had in the last nine years,” said 17-year-old Li Zhao

their journey on October 7, with three teachers from an Educational Motivation Research & Service Center. The purpose of the

was for the two troubled boys to develop a (an)

attitude to school and life.
With two

9
of them visited schools and interviewed
10
people from different walks of life. Both were asked to write about what they
11
during the walk.
“ The two boys need to know about
12
life and learn to get rid of difficulties, so we

this program,” explained Du Junpeng.
14
they had tents, they didn’t just
15
anywhere at night. “We had to

on people’s kindness for shelter,” said Li Zhao, who admits he used to be self-centered and at first was
17
against the idea of the trip. But the challenge of getting rid of the
18
on the journey has changed him.
“I’m more
19
than before. And now I also believe failure is the mother of

Yes, she said in

She was so excited that I

Christmas Eve came. No money to buy my daughter a gift. I was sobbing (抽泣) in the cold little kitchen

Peggy and I sat on the floor and opened them. I looked for the name of the sender. It was the teacher. The address was

“California”, where she had moved.

Several times on my way to work, I passed a gentleman who I supposed homeless. He had a lot of his possessions
1
down to his bike and held a cardboard sign that said he was a
2
who doesn’t drink or do drugs, but would
3
anything that could be given. He usually has
4
on and is listening to the radio. He is always
5
his own business, often reading
6
. I’ve never seen him
7
“begging”.
Several times, while I was
8
him, I realized I had some food with me, so I turned
9
and offered him that food. He took off his headphones, and said, “Umm, blueberry muffins are my
10
!” with a big smile and a gleam in his
11
. He thanked me so
12
.
The graciousness(有礼貌) and humbleness(谦逊) of his
13
makes me want to continue to stop by with “
14
” of food, money or other gifts. In the past, I’ve met
15
folks who
16
the food I was offering, saying that they wanted only money instead.
So this wonderful gentleman being so open to receiving has been a
17
.
It also makes me think how
18
I am to receiving in my life --- am I humble and grateful when I am
19
with something? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but
20
as gracious, humble and sincere as this wonderful man has been in receiving.

After 21 years of marriage,my wife wanted me to take another woman,my widowed mother, out to dinner and a movie.Due to the

That Friday after work,I drove over to

We went to a

A few days later,Mother died of a massive heart attack. It

in advance.I wasn‘t sure whether I could be there;but nevertheless,I paid for two—one for you and the other for your wife.You’11 never know

that night meant for me.I love you, son.”
At that moment.I understood the importance of giving our loved ones the time they

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
One day the child asked God: “You are going to send me to
1
tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and
2
?” God replied:“
3
the angels, I have chosen
4
for you, she will be waiting there and
5
you.”
“But,” said the child:” Leave me here in Heaven. I don’t want anything else
6
sing and smile. That’s what I need to be happy!” God said: “Your angel will sing and smile for you. And you will feel your
7
’ s love and be happy.” How am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don’t know the language that
8
talk?” “That’s easy”, said God: “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet
9
you will ever hear, and
10
much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to
11
.”
The child looked up at God
12
: “And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?” God smiled: “Your angel will place your
13
together and will teach you how to pray.” The child said: “I’ve heard on earth there are
14
men. Who will protect me?” God put his arm around the child, saying: “Your angel will defend you-
15
it means risking life!” “But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.” God
16
the child: “Your angel will always talk about me and will teach you the way to
17
to me, even though I will always be
18
you.”
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven. But voices from earth could already be heard. The child, in a hurry, asked softly: “Oh God, if I
19
leave now, Please tell my Angel’s name!” God replied: “Your angel’s name is of no importance…you will

call her MOMMY!”

Once upon a time a king, in the company of his ministers, went to the imperial garden for a walk. When he was walking around a pond, a strange idea
1
upon him and he asked, “How many buckets(桶) of water are there in the pond?” The ministers looked at each other,
2
to give an answer.
Rather
3
, the king ordered, “You have three days’ grace. Any one who offers an answer will be handsomely awarded. Those who fail will be
4
.”
The time limit was due in the twinkling(闪烁)of an eye, yet the ministers were still at their wit’s end. At this time a child appearedwho declared that he knew the answer. The king told his
5
ministers to go with the child for the measurement. To their
6
, the child refused the suggestion with a smile, “It is very easy. No
7
to go to the pond.” This made the king laugh
8
, “Alright, let us know what it is.” The child winked (眨眼) and said, “That
9
on the size of the bucket. If it is as big as the pond, there is one bucket of water; if it is halfas big, two buckets; if one third as big, three buckets; if...”“Stop! That’s it. You’ve got the
10
.” The king was satisfied and the child was duly rewarded.
Why did the ministers feel it so differentto settle the problem? Because they fell in a pitfall (陷阱), following a wrong way of thinking. People’s thinking often goes a habitual way — the beaten track of straightforwardness.
11
is a static (静态的) way presupposing every object definite and certain, i.e. the size of the pond and the bucket should be clearly
12
. If one of them is unknown, it will be difficult to do the measurement, let alone
13
. Why not change your mode of thought — from static to dynamic(动态的), from concrete to
14
? If you adopt an indirect way and try to find out the proportional relation between the pond and the bucket, you’11 get an answer — flexible yet
15
to solve the problem.
Sometimes to get out of the difficulty one must change one’s way of thinking, or simply change one’s approach towards a problem.

Ban the Band(乐队)?

Most of us think the dance is great

5
it!”Amy cried out during the lunch break.
“Someone said the school couldn’t
6
la band, and they think it’s too noisy anyway,”added Daniel.
“Well,I don’t think it’s
7
enough without a band!”declared Angela,“and I’m going to see what can be done.”
Angela was as good as her
8
.In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster who agreed to give the
9
some more thought. And he suggested that one
10
for having a band was to increase the price of each ticket from $5 to $10.Angela had to
11
out whether the students would like to do that.
“I need all of you to help me,”she
12
to our group before school the next day.“Mr.Berry gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their
13
about the band and the extra cost.”
14
the day we asked around as Angela suggested, and wrote down people’s feelings about the band and the cost.We were amazed how much
15
there was for the band and everyone agreed to pay the extra $5.
“I’m surprised,”smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the
16
.“I really thought that only a few people
17
their band and that the cost would be too high.OK,Angela, your next
18
is to find a good band and line them up for the dance.”
Angela was all smiles and
19
the news to Amy and Daniel.“You’re
20
,”smiled Daniel to Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.

Last Friday my brother and I were driving home and had a fun conversation. So absorbed in our talk, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us towards a

3
my brother paid the bridge fee and drove on. He was greatly
4
by his mistake and the needless

of $4.
We eventually reached an exit, and as we took it, my brother noticed a young fellow
6
over to the side. He came out of his car and tried to
7
someone. I was busy trying to
8
which way we would go next, but my brother stopped and asked the guy if he needed any
9
And he did. He had a flat tire and needed a tool to get it off.
My brother gave him a wrench(扳手), and then helped him
10
the flat. The young man said that this had been a
11
week for him: earlier he had gotten into a minor car
12
, and now this tire was flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air’’ and kept
13
us because he really would have been
14
if we hadn’t come along.
After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to give us. “No,” my brother said. “We were never
15
to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know
16
we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into a(n)
17
to serve.”
What I loved most was
18
my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his mistake into
19
energy to help others even in a negative situation, which could only come from a calm mind and an open

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
There once was a happy monkey in the jungle. He was wandering all days, eating delicious fruit when hungry and
1
when tired. One day he came upon a house, where he saw a bowl of the most beautiful
2
. He took one in each hand and ran back into the forest.
The monkey tried to eat them, but hurt his teeth. The apples were made of wood, but they were beautiful, and when the other monkeys said that they
3
them, he held onto them even tighter.
The monkey admired his new possessions proudly as he wandered the jungle. The two apples glistened (闪亮) red in the
4
, and seemed perfect to him. He became so attached to them that he didn’t even notice his
5
at first.
A fruit tree reminded him, but he felt the apples in his hands. He couldn’t bear to set them down to reach for the fruit. In fact, he couldn’t
6
, either, if he was to defend his apples. This proud, but less happy monkey continued to walk along the forest trails (小路).
The apples became
7
, and the poor little monkey thought about leaving them behind. He was tired and hungry; he couldn’t climb trees or collect fruit with his hands
8
. What if he just let go (释放)?
Letting go of such
9
things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so tired. Seeing the next fruit tree and smelling its fruit, the monkey stopped. He
10
the wooden apples and reached up for his meal. He was happy again.
Like that little monkey, we
11
carry things that seem too valuable. Letting go of them seems crazy. But
12
: only with open hands can we receive something else.
