My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it the
1
day, and I washed a lot of things. Everything worked
2
, but I couldn’t find
3
of my husband’s socks though I had looked
4
for it.
The next morning, I got ready for
5
as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them and told them
6
we were going to do
7
.
When I turned
8
to write on the blackboard, the class burst out
9
. They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was
10
the headmaster would be in to see all this.
I asked the class to
11
, but the
12
I talked , the more they laughed. So I thought I had better pay
13
attention to them and continue to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they laughed even more.
Before long, the teacher who had the room next to
14
came to see
15
all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started
16
, too. “ Good Heavens!” I said . “ Will
17
please tell me what is so
18
? ” “ Oh, God, ” said the teacher. “ You have a brown
19
stuck (沾) to the back of your shirt. ” So that’s
20
I found my husband’s missing sock. “ Oh, well, ” I said to the class, “ Let’s just say you have had an unforgettable lesson on static electricity (静电).”

I am not one who is frightened easily, but I must admit that one night I saw a firure that really struck terror into my heart.
I
1
it was a cold moon - lit night when I was walking home. It was the first night of my whole life that I had been outside
2
at such a late time. There were
3
few people on the road at night. Even during the day, the road was used by only some. On that night, it seemed even
4
. While I was walking, I could hear some
5
made by creatures that love the night world. I moved really fast towards home. It was
6
because I was hungry. More importantly, I was eager to get back home for warmth. All of a sudden, I
7
an old lady in a short distance away. Her
8
was covered with a white cloth. She was
9
to me, I think.
I was a bit
10
. I wanted to know
11
she was there at that time of the late night. I stopped walking for a while. As I
12
there, stories about ghosts (鬼) began to come to my mind one after
13
. I was soon
14
fear and started to run as fast as I could. When I reached home I could
15
speak.
The next day, however, I
16
that place again to make sure that the woman was not a ghost but indeed a real person. But I could find no footprints there
17
a banana plant. I realized then that it was the banana plant with its leaves moving in the gentle wind that
18
like a woman waving her hand. I had indeed made a fool of myself; but after the
19
night’s experience, this
20
was small relief to me.

No one in the United States could forget the sorrowful story, April 14th, 1865
1
Abraham Lincoln was murdered.
The night after a very busy
2
, the President and his wife went to Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C where a new play was to be put on.
Near the theatre
3
a 25-year-old unsuccessful actor named John Wilkes Booth, who was strongly against the North though he hadn’t fought
4
the South himself. As the play
5
after a moment of rest, Booth came into the theatre. He walked slowly and quietly
6
the door through which he could see the President’s
7
. He looked
8
carefully so as to find the guards
9
task was to protect the President from the enemy. To his joy, there was none of
10
and nobody noticed him. He reached the door quickly and began to get hold of the gun
11
in his pocket.
It was quiet in the theatre and everyone
12
his eyes on the stage. Suddenly a terrible sound of
13
broke in on the play. It surprised everyone and soon they looked
14
where the sound had just come .Smoke was seen coming out of the President’s box, where the
15
had enjoyed the play. Right away the theatre was full of shouting and excited people. Soldiers hurried in to
16
the building, but it was too
17
! The murderer had already
18
from the box onto the stage, from which then he hurriedly ran out of the theatre and soon disappeared in the
19
.
The news came that Lincoln, whom the people had
20
to love as an inspiring leader and a wise, warm-hearted, honest man, was short in the chest and died early the next morning.

Mrs. Green, including her husband and three children, lived in a city,
1
was very near the countryside. She worked
2
a teacher and gave music lessons at a school. Of course she was fond of.
3
. Mrs. Green had a good voice and she
4
her classes exciting. But she had a
5
point. Some of her notes (音调) were so high that they sounded like a door which needed
6
. In order to improve her notes, she took
7
chance that she could find to practise.
As her house was not big, she couldn't practise
8
in it. So she usually left home, walking and singing
9
the country road. She practised her high notes
10
walking. However, each time she heard a person or a car
11
along the road, she
12
singing. She did not want her high notes to be
13
, for she was shy.
One afternoon a fast open car came up to her so
14
and so fast that she didn't
15
it until the car was only a few meters. She was practising some of her
16
and most difficult notes at that time. As the car passed by, she saw a
17
expression come over the driver's face. He stopped suddenly to
18
all the tires (轮胎) carefully.
Mrs. Green felt it shy to tell the driver what the
19
he had heard really was. The driver found
20
wrong, got back into the car and drove off.

My husband used to be a workaholic(工作狂).Nothing seemed to be more
1
to him than his work, not even his family.
He usually

.He even couldn’t finish all his work in the office. He came back at ten at night. However,I never expected that he would give me a kiss.
8
he got home,he would start to

.The kids had already been in bed,of course.
“Mom,where is Dad?Why I
10
see him?”the kids often asked.
“Well,Dad has to work.He is busy,”I always
11
like this.As time went by,they didn’t ask where their dad was again.Perhaps they had
12
that they had a dad. However, the situation changed several months ago.
Jenny,our daughter,suddenly became
13
.I sent her to the hospital. The
14
told me that she was seriously ill and that she was calling
15
all the time.Tears burst into my eyes when I
16
that.I finally called my
17
and told him about that.Half an hour later,he came to the hospital and held Jenny’s little hands.
He

another job two weeks later.
“I just wanted to make as much
19
as possible for you and our kids. But now,I just want to
20
as much time as possible with you and the kids,”he said and that’s what he is doing now.

I’ve always had strong opinions of how love should be expressed, but others had their own ways of showing care.
What I
1
most about visiting my boyfriend’s parents is the loud tick of the clock in the dining room as we
2
ate our meal. With so little conversation I was quick to
3
his family as cold. When we got into the
4
to go home, his father suddenly appeared.
5
, he began to wash his son’s windscreen. I could feel he was a caring man through the glass.
I learned another lesson about love a few years later. My father often
6
me early in the morning. “Buy Xerox. It’s a good sharp price,” he might say when I answered the phone. No pleasant
7
or inquiry about my life, just financial instructions. This manner of his
8
me and we often quarreled. But one day, I thought about my father’s success in business and realized that his concern for my financial security lay behind his
9
morning calls. The next time he called and told me to buy a stock, I
10
him.
When my social style has conflicted with that of my friends, I’ve often felt
11
. For example, I always return phone calls
12
and regularly contact with my friends. I expect the same from them. I had one friend who rarely called, answering my messages with short e-mails. I rushed to the
13
: She wasn’t a good friend! My anger
14
as the holidays approached. But then she came to a gathering I
15
and handed me a beautiful dress I had fallen in love with when we did some window-shopping the previous month. I was
16
at her thoughtfulness, and regretful for how I’d considered her to be
17
. Clearly I needed to change my expectations of friends.
Far too often, I ignored their
18
expressions, eagerly expecting them to do things in my
19
. Over the years, however, I’ve learned to
20
other persons, love signs.

Are you a social butterfly, or do you prefer being at the edge of a group of friends? Either way, your genes and evolution may play a major
1
, US researchers reported on Monday.
While it may come as no surprise that genes may help explain
2
some people have many friends and others have
3
, the researchers said, their findings go just a little farther than that.
"Some of the things we find are
4
uncommon," said Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University in Massachusetts, who helped
5
the study.
"We find that how interconnected your friends are
6
on your genes. Some people have four friends who know each other and some people have four friends who don't
7
each other.
8
Dick and Harry know each other depends on Tom's
9
," Christakis said in a telephone interview.
Christakis and colleague James Fowler of the University of California San Diego are
10
known for their studies that show obesity, smoking and happiness spread in networks.
For this study, they and Christopher Dawes of UCSD used national data that
11
more than 1,000 identical(同卵的) and fraternal(异卵的) twins’ genes. Because
12
share an environment, these studies are good for showing the impact that genes have
13
various things, because identical twins
14
all their genes while fraternal twins share just half.
"We found there appears to be a genetic tendency to introduce your friends
15
each other," Christakis said.
There could be good, evolutionary reasons
16
this. People in the middle of a social network could be secret to useful gossip,
17
the location of food or good investment choices.
But they would also be at risk of catching effects from all sides -- in which case the advantage would
18
more cautious social behavior, they wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"It may be that natural selection is
19
not just things like whether or not we can resist the common cold, but also who it is that we are going to come into
20
with," Fowler said in a statement.

So, here I am, a

. Up until April of this year, he was able to live alone, drive, and
5
all of his own needs. His health has broken sown swiftly. I’m the only girl out of the five children. Being the only girl and a nurse
6
me at the top of the caregiver list. Taking care of a sick parent is very
7
, not at all like taking care of other patients. I have to
8
my own family to be here with Dad. I know this is
9
I need to be but it is still hard. I
10
abut 12-15 hours day taking care of him. I want to spend all of the time that I can with him because I know that our
11
left together is short.
At the same time, I find myself
12
that my brothers don’t help more. Sometimes, it is days between their
13
. they all have families of their own and busy lives but…so do I. My eldest brother does help some. He
14
at night. He comes in at 8 or 9pm and lets me go home. But he is up and
15
to hit the road at about 6 am. My
16
brothers pop in for 10-15 minute visits. It is
17
annoying. They say they
18
stand “to see Daddy this way” which I understand. It hurts me to see him so sick
19
weak, too. But …he’s our Dad. He has taken care of us our whole lives. I just
20
like we should all do our part to take care of him now.

I have said enough to you about the fact that no two native speakers of English speak it alike, but perhaps you are clever enough to ask me whether I myself speak it in the same way.
I must
1
at once that I do not. Nobody does. I am at present speaking to an audience of many thousands of gramophonists(学话者), many of
2
are trying hard to follow my words, syllable by syllable. If I were to speak to you as carelessly as I speak to my wife at home, this record would be
3
; and if I were to speak to my wife at home as carefully as I am speaking to you, she would think that I was going mad.
As a public speaker I have to take care that every word I say is heard clearly at the far
4
of large halls containing thousands of people. “But at home, when I have to consider only my wife sitting
5
six feet of me at breakfast, I take so little pains with my speech that very often,
6
giving me the expected answer, she says, “Don’t mumble, and don’t turn you head away when you speak. I can’t hear a word you are saying.” And she also is a little careless. Sometimes I have to say “what” two or three times during our meal. And she
7
me of growing deafer and deafer, though she does not say so, because, as I am now over seventy, it might be true.
We all have company manners. If you were to
8
a strange family and to listen through the keyhole before going in---not that I would suggest for a moment that you are capable of doing such a very unladylike or ungentlemanlike thing; but still, if, in your enthusiasm for studying languages you could bring yourself to do it just for a few seconds to hear how a family speak to one another when there is
9
listening to them, and then walk into the room and hear how very
10
they speak in your presence, the change would surprise you. Even when our home manners are as good as our company manners---and of course they ought to be better --- they are always different; and the difference is greater in speech than in anything else.

I grew up in a tiny Baltimore row house in a faraway mountain area.My parents
1
the necessities of life
2
they couldn’t give much more.If I asked my father
3
a pair of jeans,he would say,“If you want them, make the money and buy them
4
.”He wasn’t being mean;he just couldn’t
5
them.From age 12 on,I did part-time jobs after school.
When I
6
from high school,I joined the navy.Soon I was in a boot camp(新兵训练营) at Parris Island,S.C.,where I learned that life in the navy centered around completing daily
7
.These could be anything from cleaning the camp to conducting mock(模拟的) battles.Completing these tasks successfully
8
discipline,team-work and responsibility.It didn’t
9
whether you were black, white or Asian;everyone worked together for the
10
of the company.
I went
11
to graduate from the U.S.Naval Academy and later became an officer in the navy. The part of my job I
12
most was the consueling(咨询) meetings I
13
with the family members of the men and women in my
14
,trying to help them deal with the long periods of
15
.These proved popular and word of them spread.
16
I was being asked to give encouraging
17
to business groups, educators and kids across the country.
But I consider the boot camp my first real
18
,and my life is still guided by the
19
lessons I learned there. It taught me discipline, friendship and the pride related to setting a task every day and working hard to
