【1】‘Kung Hei Fat Choi!’ That’s a phrase that has been heard many times in London’s Chinatown over the last few days. Why? Because it’s Chinese New Year, and the UK’s Chinese community are celebrating the Year of the Dragon.

【2】This year the celebrations which include more than 100 events have been more spectacular (壮观的)than ever with more than 200,000 people gathering to watch a huge parade of lions, dragons, drums, and ribbon and fan dancers. The procession made its way from Chinatown to Trafalgar Square, the very heart of London. Meanwhile, London’s museums, art galleries and theatres are running special China-themed seasons.

【3】London has a proud history of multiculturalism, and the Chinese community is one of the oldest in the city. Chinese immigrants first came to London in the mid 19th Century, _____________________seamen involved in the tea trade via Canton. For that reason Cantonese is still spoken more widely in the UK than Mandarin.

【4】A more recent wave of immigration took place in the 1960s when many workers came from Hong Kong to find work in the flourishing restaurant business. One part of the central London neighborhood of Soho became synonymous with Chinese restaurants and began to be known as Chinatown.

【5】Today more than 60,000 people of Chinese descent live in London which means that there are plenty of people to conduct the New Year festivities.

【6】Much of this has been organized through partnerships between Chinese community groups and the Mayor of London’s office. Indeed, London’s Mayor has been an outspoken advocate of strengthening ties between the UK and China. In his Chinese New Year speech he said, “To everyone in China, think of London as your second home.”

【7】So whether you are in London, Beijing or Hong Kong, have a happy Chinese New Year.

Internet addiction is a clinical disorder marked by out-of-control Internet use. A research team led by Hao Lei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan carried out brain scans of 35 men and women aged between 14 and 21.

Specialized MRI brain scans showed changes in the white matter of the brain, the part that contains nerve fibres in those classed as Internet addicts (对网络入迷的人), compared with non-addicts.

There was evidence of disruption (中断) to connections in nerve fibres linking brain areas involved in emotions, decision-making, and self-control.

Dr. Hao Lei and colleagues write in Plos One:

“Overall, our findings indicate that IAD has abnormal white matter integrity(完整) in brain regions involving emotional generation and processing, executive(行政的)attention, decision-making and cognitive(认知的) control.

“The results also suggest that IAD may share psychological and neural mechanisms (机制) with other types of substance addiction and impulse control disorders.”

Prof. Gunter Schumann, chair in biological psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London, said similar findings have been found in video game addicts. He told the BBC, “For the first time two studies show changes in the neuronal(神经元的) connections between brain areas as well as changes in brain function in people who are frequently using the Internet or video games.”

Commenting on the Chinese study, Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, psychiatrist and honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College London, said the research was “groundbreaking”.

She added: “We are finally being told what doctors suspected for some time, and that white matter abnormalities(反常) in the brain are present not only in addictions where substances are involved but also in behavioural ones such as Internet addiction.”

She said further studies with larger numbers of subjects were needed to confirm the findings.

66. The researchers found 17 persons addicted to be Internet by_______.

   A. asking them questions                                B. comparing their brains

   C. watching their behavior                              D. giving them medical tests

67. What did the experts find from brain scans?

   A. The color of the white matter is different.      B. The white matter of the brain has changed.

   C. The nerve fibres stop working completely.      D. The nerve fibres don't control their actions.

68. Prof. Gunter Schumann would agree that _______.

   A. Internet addicts are similar to video game addicts

   B. Internet addiction is different from drug addiction

   C. the new study doesn't agree with other findings

   D. similar studies have never been conducted before

69. According to Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, the Chinese study ______ .

   A. is of no practical value                                 B. needs further evidence

   C. is of great significance                                 D. confirms previous studies

70. What can be the best title of the passage?

   A. Internet Addiction                                      B. Keep away from Internet

   C. Internet Addiction Disorder                           D. Web Addicts Have Brain Changes

Planetary changes which will have an influence on many are drawing near because of the poor ecological (生态的) state of the planet. Actually change has already begun through climate changes, but most humans haven’t noticed this yet. Climate change has begun to influence the world already and will begin to worsen within the next few years. Around 2020 most people will begin to see that the results of climate change will be far more serious than now understood.

As the planet is under big geological (地质的)stresses, which are continuously increasing, it will in the future no longer be able to support its population. Scarcity (缺乏) of resources, over-farming, lack of clean air, not enough clean drinking water and drought are some of the issues that will all play a much greater role in the near future.

Humans have caused large ecological devastation (破坏). The lifestyles of many people are improving at a fast speed; however, this will finally result in a lack of some precious resources. When this scarcity begins to happen, people will no longer be able to have sustainable (可支撑的) lifestyles.

It’s important to understand that everyone plays a role in the whole process of life. Each person’s decision can finally affect the future. These decisions, all combined, can have good effect on what the future will be like for humans. So the future depends on the choices we make at the present moment.

While more and more people are becoming aware of climate change and other environmental problems related to global warming, not all are fully understanding how far-reaching its effects will be. Unfortunately, most of the humans are aware that the planet isn’t functioning well, but they don’t understand that this is creating a major problem for the future survival of humans.

So, every person should make the necessary changes to reduce their influence on the environment and help create a more sustainable future.
