How do you deal with plastic bags from the supermarket? Throw them away or recycle them? How about eating them?

The bags are no harmful to the environment. Humans and animals can safely eat them. Indian company EnviGreen has made a bag with natural materials. It looks and feels just like plastic ,but can be broken down(分解) easily.

Ashwath Hedge who set up the EnviGreen company spent four years doing experiments(实验) with 12 natural materials. They include potato, corn, vegetable oil and banana. He made the materials into liquid and used the liquid to make the bag.

Although the EnviGreen bag is more expensive than a common plastic bag, it has many advantages .According to the Wall street Journal, it takes 1000 years for common plastic bags to break down. But an EnviGreen bag can naturally break down in less than 180 days. It also breaks down in less than a day in water, and in less than a minute in boiling water. Hedge was happy to show it in his interview: he put an EnviGreen bag in water and ate it with a smile.

There are more than 15,000 tons of plastic waste in India every day. But only 9,000 tons are processed. In China, 3 billion plastic bags are used every day. Maybe EnviGreen bag could be a solution(解决办法)to the world problem of plastic pollution.

2The main idea of the third paragraph is “_________”

A. What Hedge thinks of the new bag B. How Hedge makes the EnviGreen bag

C. Who sets up the EnviGreen bag company D. How long it takes Hedge to make the bag

3The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 shows that the EnviGreen bag ______

A. is safe and can break down quickly B. is useful although it is more expensive

C. looks and feels like a common plastic bag D. will be used more widely than a common bag.

4The EnviGreen bag breaks down fastest in________.

A. hot air B. cold water C. boiling water D. natural air

5From the last paragraph ,we can infer(推断)_________

Everybody Should Say Thank You to Ray TomGnson. Why should you thank Ray Tomlinson? You might have never heard of his name before, but do you know that the e-mail you use every day was his“child"?

Ray Tomlinson is known as “the father of e-mail”. He was born in New York in 1941. He attended college at the Renaselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he took part in a program with IBM,and in 1963 he received a bachelor(学士)of Science in electrical engineering.

In 1971,Ray created the first email system, which allowed people to send messages electronically from the same computer. But he thought that there might also be a way to send messages from different computers, which led to the birth of the e-mail we know now. He chose the @ sign to separate local from global emails in the mailing address. “I used the‘@’sign to show that the user was‘at’some other hosts rather than being local,”said Ray in an interview. person to person network email was born and user @ host became the standard for email addresses,as it remainstoday.

Ray Tomlinson died at the age of 74. Thanks Ray Tomlinson for inventing the email and putting the @ sign on the map. Though he may not be famous as Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, Ray Tomlinson surely has his place among the geniuses(天才)that gave us the convenience that we call "computer technology".

Communication

People learn and share information through communication. All forms of communication have one thing in common: the sending and receiving of a message. Using different kinds of communication, people can pass along their ideas and feelings to just one person or to millions.

1 Animals communicate through sounds, scents (气味), and acts. Computers communicate with other computers through electronic networks.

People communicate through language, both spoken and written. 2 Written language includes books, newspapers, and e-mail.

People also communicate without words. Body and face movements show feelings. Deaf people use hand movements called sign language.

The arts are also a form of communication. 3

The first modern humans appeared about 200,000 years ago. They likely used sounds, movements, and then speech. About 30,000 years ago humans started making paintings and sculptures on the walls of caves.

Humans invented writing more than 5,000 years ago. The ancient Sumerian people developed the first known script (文字), called cuneiform (楔形文字). Then the ancient Egyptians developed a picture-based writing called hieroglyphics (象形文字). The invention of the printing press in the 1400s was a major advance in written communication. 4

Telecommunication is communication over long distances. In ancient times pigeons carried written messages. Before trains and cars, messengers on foot or on horseback carried letters. 5 Since then, telecommunication has become faster thanks to television, telephones, and the Internet.

A. It let printers quickly make copies of a text.

B. Communication is not only a human activity.

C. Public postal services started in the 1500s and 1600s.

D. Spoken language includes conversations and speeches.

E. Spoken communication is dependent on a number of factors.

F. Photographs, paintings, music, and movies can communicate feelings as well as facts.

G. Modern technologies for long-distance communication usually involve electrical technologies.

【题目】The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet. . . We are surrounded by the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.

Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.

1From Paragraph 1, we learn that _________.

A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential

B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products

C. diet products are misleading people

D. people are fed up with diet products

2One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _________.

A. try out a variety of diet foods

B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods

C. pay attention to their own eating habits

D. watch their weight rather than their diet

3In Paragraph 3, "gain comes without pain" probably means _________.

A. losing weight is effortless

B. it costs a lot to lose weight

C. diet products bring no pain

D. diet products are free from calories

4Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

C: central point P: point Sp: sub-point(次要点) C: conclusion

A. B.

【题目】Find Which Direction Is South

Do you have a good sense of direction? If not, please take with you a compass. But if you forget to take a compass, you can still find your way.

It’ s never a good idea to imagine that the family member who was entrusted(委托) with the job of map reading actually knows where the family is. You can tell by the slightly confused look on their faces that nothing on the ground seems to match the map. Never mind. The sun is shining and it’ s still morning. If you don’t know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you’ll need to be patient.

①Find a straight stick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.

②Try to position the stick as vertically(垂直) as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line (铅锤线)with a piece of string and weight. You haven’ t got any string?OK, use a thread from your clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.

③Mark the end of the shadow cast by the stick.

④Wait approximately half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.

⑤Keep doing this until you have made several marks.

⑥The mark nearest the stick will represent the shortest shadow, which is cast at midday, when the sun is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.

⑦Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.

⑧That point is south of where you are.

⑨Now you can turn the map, like you did before, and find which way you should be travelling.

1To find the direction, we ought to be patient probably because________.

A. it is not easy to find a proper stick B. it is not easy to position the stick

C. it takes hours to make the marks D. it takes about half an hour to make the marks

2The passage would probably be most helpful to________.

A. those who draw maps B. those who get lost

C. those who make compasses D. those who do experiments

3Which of the following pictures best shows the way of finding the direction of south?

A. B.

C. D.

4The author presents this passage by________.

A. telling an interesting story B. describing an activity in a lively way

C. testing an idea by reasoning D. introducing a practical method
