【题目】Wow,ladies! That is all I can say, I write this article with mixed emotions. Having Aiko the female robot around the house to help out could be either a blessing or a nightmare. If you are a working mother like me, then the idea of having a helping hand around would be a good thing. We working mothers dream about going home to find dinner on the table, a clean house and everything ready for the next day, that would be the perfect world.

Yet as always we women worry about being replaced,me included. Aiko has been created with special sensors (感应器) underneath her immediate“skin”cover. I believe her creator, Le Trung, has other motives(动机). Of course, he says it's not true. She doesn't complain, argue or talk back. She can carry on a conversation and help you with your math homework. She can tell you the weather outside and can speak in English and Japanese. She doesn't require any sleep nor does she complain about a headache or being tired. She can serve tea and give back massages. I'm sure some men out there would view her as the perfect woman or even“superwoman”. So with good reason I say having Aiko around could prove to be bad. As a woman and a wife,I worry about being replaced or even being compared to Aiko. How can you compete with someone or something so perfect like that?

Scientists have been trying to invent robots for a long time. There are many movies and books out there about robots. It looks like those crazy scientists are closer than we thought. Ladies, I think we are fighting a losing battle. So instead of trying to fight it,I guess we have no choice but to join them. Now where is my male robot? Hmm...I want him to look exactly like my Ken Barbie doll. Okay?

1Le Trung created Aiko mainly to ________.

A. keep people company

B. teach people foreign languages

C. help children with their homework

D. help working mothers do housework

2What can we learn about Aiko from the second paragraph?

A. She is poorly designed.

B. She is perfectly made.

C. She works better than expectations.

D. She is especially made for housewives.

3Why does the author think having Aiko around could prove to be bad?

A. The robot could replace her.

B. The robot can do more than she does.

C. The robot makes a mess in the house.

D. The robot can speak human language.

4What could be the author's purpose in writing the text?

A. To introduce a robot.

B. To argue against robotmaking.

C. To show her fights with robots.

D. To describe the daily life of a working mother.

【题目】If anything can be said about recordbreaking globetrotter (环球旅行家) Graham Hughes, it's that— throughout his travels— he's always kept his feet firmly on the ground.

The 33yearold adventurer, from Liverpool, has become the first person to visit all 201 countries in the world without using a plane.

Hughes used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days — all on a shoestring(资金微薄) of just $100 a week.

He spent four days “crossing open ocean in a leaky (漏的) boat” to reach Cape Verde on the North Atlantic, was jailed for a week in the Congo for being mistaken as a “spy”, and was arrested trying to “sneak (溜;偷偷地做) into” Russia.

And yesterday Graham Hughes trudged (长途跋涉) into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to end the epic fouryear journey that began in his hometown of Liverpool on New Year's Day 2009.

“I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was that I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,” he told the Christian Science Monitor. “I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact it is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”

Guinness has now confirmed that Hughes, who filmed the expedition for a documentary and raised money for charity Water Aid, has achieved the world record.

“The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,” Hughes added.

1Which of the following is NOT described Graham Hughes?

A. Globetrotter.

B. Adventurer.

C. The first person traveling around the world not using a plane.

D. Scientist.

2Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A. When he traveled on the ocean, his boat was leaking water.

B. He was put into prison because of being considered a spy in the Congo.

C. He was caught in Russia because he stole something.

D. It was in South Sudan that he ended his epic fouryear journey.

3Why did Hughes make the world record that he had achieved into the film — the expedition for a documentary?

A. Because he wanted to be remembered by people all over the world.

B. Because he wanted to raise money for charity Water Aid.

C. Because he only wanted to record his experience.

D. Because he wanted to earn money.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. When he traveled all over the world, he got a lot of help from different people.

B. He often sleeps on the coach.

C. He often points the direction for others.

D. He is grateful to the people who have helped him.

【题目】Public speaking is a common cause of stress for everyone. The idea of standing in front of a large group with all eyes on you can make you feel fearful in almost all kinds of situation, for example giving a presentation in class, proposing a toast at dinner or making a workrelated presentation. It seems to be a fear that's impossible to overcome. If you have ever experienced this, you know while the anxiety may develop at the actual event, it is a feeling that begins much earlier than the actual day. There are many ways you can work on your confidence and prepare yourself for a public speaking event.

A consultant specializing (专门研究) in presentation skills can help you to overcome your sense of panic.Working with a consultant does not indicate that you have a major problem; it is only an approach to receiving guidance on relaxation strategies, such as deep breathing, which can help you deal with public speaking problems with ease.

Consultants can also help you work on your confidence.Confidence is extremely important in public speaking as it lets a speaker sound more convincing.Even wellestablished public speakers practice techniques such as meditation (沉思冥想) to calm themselves before a public appearance.

It's well worth the time and effort to overcome the fear of public speaking, particularly if talks and presentations are part of your work description.Keep in mind that many of those around you are also struggling with this fear of public speaking. It will help you to become an able speaker if you can prepare beforehand. For example, you can put in time on planning your presentation in detail and practicing it many times in secret. As you get more and more familiar with your material, you'll be able to finetune (微调) the details of your presentation and this will make you a confident speaker.Your speech will become excellent in terms of style and content.

Remember that the more you get into this pattern of feeling good about yourself, the stronger you will feel about approaching events when you have to make a speech. You can also work on physical details such as adjusting your tone (音调) before the presentation by doing some warmup exercises.

In a word, believing in yourself and presenting yourself well can help you deeply impress your audience. And after a few speeches you'll notice yourself overcoming the sense of panic that you now feel in public speaking situations.

【题目】Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men.

In a survey done for insurer MetLife,51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents,” the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them up on one point:automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.

Auto safety unavoidably matters to money. Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming(where they pay 20% less), South Dakota and Washington,D. C. where their insurance costs are 16% lower.

“More than 11, 900 male drivers died in U.S.traffic accidents in 2009,compared with just under 4,900 women drivers,” according to the study. “Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, VS 1.7 deaths for women. ”

1According to the study, female drivers ________.

A. are more aggressive while driving

B. are more interested in auto knowledge

C. are more likely to stick to driving laws

D. are more familiar with safety equipment

2Insurance companies focus on female driver clients probably because they ________.

A. cause more accidents on the road

B. pay more money to the insurance companies

C. take the most part of the insurance clients

D. have the lowest amount of money on insurance claims

3We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. men are 3.1 times more likely to get tickets than women

B. all women in the USA pay the same for their auto insurance

C. more female drivers die every year than male drivers

D. women are generally safer drivers than the opposite

4The writer mainly develops paragraphs by ________.
