When writing a review, concentrate on exactly what you liked or didn't like. Give examples of strengths and weaknesses,be descriptive and provide background information on an author, director, actor or musician,if possible. Find professional reviews in magazines or newspapers and see how reviewers deal with their topics, but be sure to express your own voice in your review.

Grammar Hint for Reviews:When describing a book, movie, album or anything else, use the present tense.

Book Reviews

Discuss an author's technique, strengths and weaknesses instead of focusing on the plot. Does the story flow? Is there a strong sense of character and place?Did you stay up until dawn to finish it?Is it good reading for teenagers? What influence did it have on you and why?If you've read other books by the same author, discuss how this book compares.

Movie Reviews

Think of the major Oscar categories and consider the performances, music, lighting and setting, etc. Do these work together? Did some hold up while others didn't? If the movie is based on a book, discuss whether one is better than the other and why. If the movie is a remake, compare the film to its original.

Remember that a wellwritten movie review should discuss strengths and weaknesses. Some readers may not have seen a movie yet, so don't give away an exciting scene or the ending!

College Reviews

Begin by providing an overview of the college, including location, size and a description of the campus and/or dorm life. Think about all aspects of your college visit. What academic, athletic and afterclass programs are available? What are the students like? What makes the college different from others? Every school has strengths and weaknesses. Be objective. Consider what the school has to offer and who might enjoy or benefit the most from attending there.

Before big performances it's easy to let taking care of yourself slip as you spend too much time on rehearsals and practice. 4 Exercise can also help you feel good, and along with sleep and nutrition, is an excellent way of keeping those stress hormones from getting out of control.

Find out what the experts do. You can find books, DVDs, and online information about how to give your best when you perform, depending on what type of performance you're preparing for. 5 Or ask the cast of your school play or your drama or music teacher how they beat stage fright. 【题目】Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to sixteen received a full financial education got lost in the “wash up". An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.

At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account-let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.

Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to sixteen should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the children, schools and families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called ¨wash-up" earlier this month-the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.

As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven to ll-year-olds are savers but by the time they get t0 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit or overdraft(透支)as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have been fallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school".

The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that-unless parents step in-young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.

【1】The passage is mainly about

A. how to manage school lessons

B. how to deal with the financial crisis

D. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out

【3】The website and the consumer campaigner joined to

A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money

B. promote the connection of schools and families

C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament

D. appeal for the curriculum of financial education

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. 【1】

Most Americans would find it hard to imagine what life would look like without cars. 2 The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

3 That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. 4 Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. 5

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

A. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

B. Americans know cars very well.

C. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by cars.

D. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute.

E. However, the number of vehicles(车辆) has continued to increase in recent years.

F. Americans won’t live without cars!

G. Inventors are now working on steam car as well as electric cars.
