15.One night, when I was eight,my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget."Sweetie,my company wants to (26)B me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you've done(27)D and allowing you to skip a grade(跳级),but you'll have to(28)Byour friends.Would you say yes to your teacher?"She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it.I was puzzled. The question kept me(29)B for the rest of the night.I had said"yes"but for the first time,I realized the(30)Cdecisions adults had to make.
For almost four years,my mother would call us from Brazil every day.Every evening I'd (31)Await for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day.A phone call, however, could never replace her (32)Cand it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break,we flew to Rio to visit her.Looking at her large(33)Dapartment,I became (34)Bhow lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then(35)AI started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on (36)A family and work.(37)Ddifficult decisions, she used to tell me,you wouldn't know whether you made the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a(38)Battitude.
Back home,I(39)D myself that what my mother could do,I could, too. If she(40)Bto live in Rio all by herself,I,too, could learn to be (41)D.I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable (42)D.
My mother is now back with us.But I will never forget what the (43)Dhas really taught me.Sacrifices(牺牲) (44)Ain the end.The separation between us has proved to be(45)Bfor me.

11.Hard as you try to break with family tradition, your heart remains at home on the holidays.
---Tayari Jones
Everybody in my family always get excited about the Christmas. As the middle, artist child,I was going to do my own thing, make some new(41)C.From a book,I drew(42)B---I would spend the holiday at an artist colony!
No one took the news very well. From the way my mother got angry(43)D me,you would think that I was divorcing the family.(44)C,I held my ground and made plans for my winter adventure in New Hampshire.About 30artists were there, and it was as well artsy as I had(45)A.It felt like my life had become a strange independent film.
By Christmas Eve,I had been at the colony more than a week. The novelty (新奇感) was(46)A away. This was the holiday I'd always dreamed of.Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in(47)D.People here didn't even say"Christmas,"they said"holiday."Entire relaxation. Then why was I so (48)C?
Finally,I(49)B home.My dad answered, but I could (50)C hear him for there was too much good-time noise in the background. He turned (51)A the volume on the Stevie Wonder holiday album and(52)C me that my mother was out shopping with my brothers. Now it was my turn to (53)D.They were having a fine Christmas without me.
Despite a heavy snowstorm,a large package(54)D near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning.Tayari Jones was written in my mother's beautiful(55)A.I grasped at that parcel(包裹) like I was five years old.Inside was a beautiful delicious cake,my (56)B."Merry Christmas",read the simple card(57)C."We love you very much."

9.For most people, graduation is an exciting day,but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago.Family and friends had flown in from across the country to(36)A the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class,I had watched the (37)B turn from bad to worse in my senior year.Almost all of us graduates had degrees, but very uncertain (38)D
The weeks ahead weren't (39)C.I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any opportunities,(40)A I packed up my car and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a(41)B dragged into two,and then four, and 100job applications later,I found myself in the exact same(42)C as I was before.
You know that feeling when you wake up in(43)B?That feeling became a constant in my life.Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those many months felt like everlasting(44)D And the most annoying part was no matter how much I tried,I just couldn't seem to make any (45)B.
So what did I do to keep my good sense?I decided to(46)CSomething about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer-a little brighter.Something about writing gave me(47)A.And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you(48)D!
I put my (49)C into a children's book.Beyond the River was the story of an unlikely hero,a little fish,who(50)A to give up his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world-just a lot of hard work and determination-I was offered a(51)C contract (合同) for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into(52)B I was offered a second book deal. Then,a few months later,I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was(53)D shortly after.
Don't give up.Even if things look(54)D now, don't give up.If you work hard, things will always get better.Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream…all we need is the(55)A to push beyond the river.

8.A Welcome Gift
Dario and his mother loved their new apartment. The living room was large enough for their piano. That night, the two of them(41)Aside by side at the piano. They played jazz music to celebrate their new home. The loud (42)Cfilled the room and made them feel very happy.

"I heard you playing the other night,"she said."The sounds woke me out of bed.I(54)Dthat you might play like this every night. So I wrote a short note.I hope you don't think I disliked the playing."
Dario's mother smiled at Mrs.Gilbert."I think maybe we(55)Dyou an apology."she said."I didn't(56)Ahow late it was when we were playing.Maybe we should play some quieter music at night.
"You play, you play!"Mrs.Gilbert said."I like what you play!Just not so loud at night."She pointed to the book she had given them."These songs are not such(57)Dmusic."
"These songs are beautiful music."Dario's mother said."We will be(58)Cto play them in the evening."
"And we won't play so loud or late!"Dario said.He was already looking forward to(59)Bthe new music.More than that, however,he was happy to see the big smile on his mother's face.It gave him a feeling of(60)Cand made him feel that they were home at last.
