14．In the dry Namib Desert on the west coast of Africa，one type of beetle has found a special way of surviving．When the morning fog arrives，the Namib Beetle collects water drops on its bumpy（起伏不平的）back，then lets the water roll down into its mouth，allowing it to drink in an area without flowing water．
    ShreerangChhatre watns to use what nature has developed to help the world's poor．Chhatre is an engineer at MIT who works on fog harvesting，the devices that，like the beetle，attract water drops．This way，poor villagers could collect clan water near their homes，instead of spending hours carrying water from distant wells of rivers．
    Access to water is a pressing global issue．According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF，nearly 900 million people worldwide live without safe drinking water．The burden of finding and transporting water falls heavily on women and children．"As a middle-class person，I think it's terrible that the poor have to spend hours a day walking just to obtain a basic necessity，"Chhatre says．
   A fog-harvesting device consists of a fence-like mesh panel（网状面板），which attracts drops，connected to containers into which water falls．Chhatre has improved the materials used in these devices．He is continuing his work at MTT Sloan and the Legaturn Center in order to develop a workable business plan for applying fog-harvesting devices．
    Interest in fog harvesting dates back to the 1990s，and has increased since new research on the Namib Beetle became famous in 2001．A few technologists saw potential in the concept for people．One Canadian charitable organization，FogQuest，has tested projects in Chile and Guatemala．
    But fog harvesting remains in its infancy，technologically and commercially，as Chhatre readily recognizes．"It still faces some open problems，"he says．"But it's a work in progress．"After all，the water that fills our rivers and lakes comes from air．

13．THIS is an adapted excerpt（摘录）from Eman Mohammed's speech at TED （Technology，Entertainment and Design），a non-profit conference，in 2014．She is one of the few female photo journalists in the Gaza Strip（加沙地带）．
    When I was 19，I started my career as the first female photojournalist in the Gaza Strip，Palestine．My work as a woman photographer was considered a serious insult（侮辱）to local traditions．The male-dominated profession made me feel unwelcome by all possible means．They made it clear that a woman must not do a man's job．Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me．
    Three of my colleagues went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area where explosions were the only thing I could hear．Dust was flying in the air，and the ground was shaking beneath me．I only realized we weren't there to document the event when the three of them got back into the armored（装甲的）Jeep and drove away，waving and laughing．Leaving me behind in the open air strike zone．
    For a moment，I felt terrified，humiliated，and sorry for myself…
    I started paying closer attention to women's lives in Gaza．Because I am a woman，I could go where my colleagues were forbidden to go．Beyond the obvious pain and struggle，there were healthy amounts of laugher and accomplishments．
    In front of a police compound in Gaza City during the first war in Gaza，an Israeli air raid（袭击）destroyed the compound and broke my nose．For a moment，all I saw was bright white．I thought I had either gone blind or I was in heaven．By the time I managed to open my eyes，I had documented this moment．
    Mohammed Khader is a Palestinian worker who spent two decades in Israel．As his retirement plan，he decided to build a four-floor house．By just the first field operation（军事行动）in his neighborhood，the house had been flattened．Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised and a bathtub．Mohammed put the bathtub on the top of the rubble（瓦砾）and started giving his kids a bobble bath every morning．
     My work is not meant to hide the scars of war，but to show the full unseen stories of Gazans．As a Palestinian female photographer，the journey of struggle，survival and everyday life has inspired me to overcome the community taboo（禁忌）and see a different side of war and its aftermath（灾祸）．I became a witness with a choice：to run away or stand still．
