4.A great many people are disappointed because of unrealistic expectations.
Walking up to a department store's cloth counter,a(n) (1)Bng woman said,"I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?"
"Only one (2Aper yard,"replied the smirking (自鸣得意的) male clerk.
Not to be taken back by the funny words, the woman said,"That's fine!I'll take ten yards."
With(3Cwritten all over his face, the clerk(4Ameasured out and wrapped the cloth, then held it out teasingly,(5Cforward to receive his(6BThe woman got the package quickly from the clerk and pointed to a little old man standing beside her."Grandpa will pay the bill instead of me,"she(7 )A.
He was no doubt disappointed. But in the course of living, many people are(8)B when others do not (9Atheir expectations. In order to be happy, some expectations must be dropped. These three particular(10Dand unhealthy expectations are some of the main causes:
1. Expect too much(11)C.When others say,"Thank you,"or in any way to show their gratitude,be happy. It is a gift!
2. Expect others to make you happy. They simply cannot do that.Make yourself happy and (12)Byour joy with others.
3. Expect not to be(13)B.At times, people will simply not come through for you in the way you need. (14)Athem and move on.
Get rid of these three unrealistic expectations and you can begin to expect more (15)A right away!

3.Education from My Father
My memories of my father are slim because he was so sick in the last years of his life.But there are (36)C that I am often reminded of and which may have had some bearing on my love of (37)A.
When I was small I was somewhat (38)D of lightning and thunder.My father explained it.The explanation was in (39)B that a child could understand but was basically correct.I gained a better (40)A later,but I didn't have to unlearn anything.
What he said was that there was electricity in the clouds (41)B it travelled to the ground like a spark.When it travelled (42)D the air it made the air so hot that it(43)B.Then there was nothing where the air had been and the air all around rushed in to (44)A the space.He clapped his hands together very loud,(45)D to be the air rushing in,and said that makes the thunder.When I hear thunder,I can still hear that (46)A.
He explained why if it was cloudy in the winter the night was warmer than if it was(47)C.It was one of those nights when the sky was full of stars:no moon,no town lights.But there were more stars than you could (48)C and they had color too.He said that if there were no clouds,we had no blankets and were(49)B to the universe.Our warmth was going to(50)A the whole universe.When there were clouds,they were like blankets and we were not exposed to the universe.I (51)D feel on the edge of space on a very clear night.
I am sure there were many other lessons that I (52)C but no longer remember.What I did(53)D,in general,was that there were explanations and that the more I understood them,the more   comfortable the world was to live in.I was not taught that there were (54)C but that there was understanding if you looked for it.This may be why I have always been (55)B in science.

Everyone has a childhood full of dreams.Looking back on my childhood,I am (41)J  that naturalists are born and not made.Although we were all brought up in the same way,my brothers and sisters soon (42)D  their pressed flowers and insects.Unlike them,I had no (43)B  for music and languages.I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I,we spent our summer holidays in Hungary.I have only the (44)E  memory of the house we lived in,of my room and my toys.Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents,aunts,uncles and cousins who gathered next door.But I do have a clear memory of the dogs,the farm animals,the local birds,and above all,the insects.
I am a naturalist,not a scientist.I have a strong love for the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into various investigations.I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people's observations and discoveries.Then something happens-that brings these observations together in my (45)F  mind.Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the (46)G,because it all seems to fit together.This has resulted in my publishing 300papers and books,which some might honor with the (47)H  of scientific research.
But curiosity,a keen eye,a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist:one of the outstanding and essential qualities (48)A  is self-discipline,a quality I lack.A scientist,up to point,can be made.A naturalist is (49)I.If you can combine the two,you get the best of both worlds.
1.A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.
The conversation soon turned into complaints about (36)Ain work and life.Offering his(37)Dcoffee,the professor went to the kitchen and (38)Bwith a large pot of coffee and a (39)Bof cups-porcelain,plastic,glass,crystal,some plain-looking,some expensive, some beautiful-telling them to (40)Cthemselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said,"if you have (41)C,all the nice-looking expensive cups have been (42)A,leaving behind the plain and(43)Bones.While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the (44)Cof your problems and stress."
"Be assured that the cup(45)Dadds no quality to the coffee.(46)Dit is just more expensive and in some cases (47)Bhides what we drink."
"(48)Aall of you really want is coffee, not the cup,(49)A you consciously went for the best cups….And then you began(50)Deach other's cups."
Now consider this:(51)Bis the coffee;the jobs, money and position in society are the cups.(52)Aare just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the (53)Cof life we live.Sometimes,by concentrating only on the cup,we (54)Dto enjoy the coffee.Value the coffee, not the cups!Don't let the cups (55)Byou…enjoy the coffee instead.

15.Imagine being asked to spend twelve or so years of your life in a society that consisted only of members of your own sex,how would you react?(36)D  But the fact is that segregated(隔离)schools shoot up very rapidly around the world,and so many parents choose to force such abnormal conditions on their children-conditions which they themselves wouldn't put up with for one minute!
(37)GThose advocates of segregated schools argue that children from segregated schools have greater achievements academically,socially in athletic and have greater self-confidence.Further,there are many more practical advantages in segregated schools:adolescent problems can be dealt with better and more easily.(38)B It is a wonderful proof of their worth.
On the other side.those advocates of co-education point out that any discussion of this topic is bound to question the aims of education.One of the chief aims of education is equip future citizens with all they require to take their places in adult society which is made up of men and women.When segregated,boys and girls are made to feel that they are a race apart.Competition between the sexes is developed.(39)C Children from segregated schools sometimes lack healthy attitude to life that co-education encourages.
To sum up,every coin has double sides.(40)FIt is about time somebody explorded that theory about segregated schools being the better place for your children.

A.You would react as if you were a puzzled parent.
B.Lastly in many countries,the most famous schools are segregated.
C.Anyone entering adult society after years of segregation can only be in for a shock.
D.Unless there was something wrong with you,you wouldn't be too happy about it.
E.When segregated,boys and girls can focus on their study.
F.However,I believe it's far more beneficial for boys and girls to learn and play together.
G.Many sociologists and educationalists present their views on this issue from both sides.

13.How to Make Friends
Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends.Good friendship.has many benefits.It offers companionship,improves self-worth and promotes good health.There are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town,or changed our jobs or schools.Such changes often leave us without a friend.(56)EBut for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage.Below are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.
1.Associate with others.
The first step to making friends is associating with other people.You can go to public places to meet new people.Besides,you will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member of such places.
2.Start a conversation.
Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends.(57)CYou can always start the conversation.Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating with other people.
3.(58)B
Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together.Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.
4.Let it grow.
It is a good thing to stay in touch.However,try not to press your new friend with calls,messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.(59)GThe best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.
5.Enjoy your friendship.
The best way to enjoy your friendship is to allow your friends to be themselves.(60)DTry not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be.Become the kind of friend you will want your friend to be to you.
A.Be cheerful.
B.Do things together.
C.Do not wait to be spoken to.
D.Try not to find fault with your friends.
E.Making new friends comes easy for some people.
F.For a friendship to develop you need to stay in touch.
G.So you will need to give your friend time to react to you.
