8.[1]The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned coal stove. An eight-year-old boy named Glenn Cunningham had the job of coming to school early each day so that he could use kerosene (煤油) to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived. One cold morning someone mistakenly filled the kerosene container he used with gasoline, and disaster struck.
[2]The class and teacher arrived to find the schoolhouse was in flames.Terrified on realizing that Glenn was inside, they rushed in and managed to take the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building, more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was rushed to a nearby country hospital.
[3]From his bed,the badly burned,semi-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower part of his body.
[4]But the brave boy didn't want to die.Glenn made up his mind that he would survive. And somehow,to the amazement of the doctor,he did ___.Yet when the danger of dying was past,he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. The mother was told that since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in his legs that it would almost be better if he had died, since he was surely to be a lifetime cripple (瘸子) with no use at all of his legs. His mother refused to let the doctors cut off his legs.
[5]Once more this brave little boy made up his mind.He would not be a cripple. He would walk. But unfortunately, from the waist down,Glenn had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, all but lifeless.
[6]Eventually,Glenn was released from the hospital.Every day afterwards, his mother and father would massage(按摩) his legs, but there was no feeling,no control, nothing.Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever.
[7]When he wasn't in bed,he had to be in a wheelchair. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of sitting there,he threw himself from the chair.Glenn pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him.
[8]He worked his way to the white fence bordering their yard. With great efforts,he raised himself up on the fence. Then he began dragging himself along the fence, determined that he would walk.He started to do this every day until he wore a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence. There was nothing he wanted more than to develop life in those legs.
[9]Eventually,through the daily massage and his determination,Glenn did develop the ability first to stand up,then to walk with help, then to walk by himself-and finally miraculously-to run.
[10]Glenn began to run to school. He ran for the joy of running and being able to run.He ran everywhere that he could. The people in his town would often see him run by on his way who knows where and smile.Later in college Glenn made the track team where his tremendous determination paid off.He eventually received the nickname the"Kansas Flyer."In February 1934,in New York City, this determined young man,Dr.Glenn Cunningham, ran the mile in four minutes and eight seconds, the world's fastest indoor mile!

4.A.Advantages of removing traffic signals
B.Opinions of the public
C.Opinions of the creator
D.The experiment with on light roads
E.Problems from abolishing traffic signals
F.Reasons for abolishing traffic signals

(61)F
What causes traffic jams?Too much cars, right? No!Some Brits are now saying that traffic lights are to blame for much of the congestion.
(62)A
A report from the Institute of Economic Affairs,a UK think tank(智囊团),argues that abolishing traffic signals would decrease congestion, reduce exhaust emissions(废气排放) and improve safety. The report said that removing lights should also prevent other bad behavior caused by signals, such as speeding up to catch a green light. It would also avoid the wasted time when drivers have to sit at a red light even if no one is using the green.
(63)D
The idea may sound strange, but it's not new.Seven cities and regions in Europe are experimenting with no-light roads.Drachten in the Netherlands has got rid of 16 of its traffic light crossings and changed the other two to roundabouts under a"shared space"scheme. At crossings, cyclists dutifully raise their arm when they want to make a turn, and drivers follow a first-arrived,first-through approach and communicate by hand signals, nods and waving. The result?Typical journey time has been cut in half, and accidents and congestion have mostly disappeared.
(64)C
There have been small collisions but no problem, said Hans Monderman creator of the scheme."We want small accidents,in order to prevent serious ones.It works well because it's dangerous. The driver has to be responsible for his or her own risk."The many rules take away the ability to be considerate,"Monderman added."We're losing our responsibility for socially responsible behavior."
(65)B
So far,Drachten's locals have called the experiment a success."I am used to it now,"said Helena Spaanstra,24."You drive more slowly and carefully, but somehow you seem to get around town quicker."Tony Ooosward,70,was equally enthusiastic."I am a walker and now you are the boss at the crossroads, everyone waits for you.But at the same time walkers wait until there are a number of people wanting to cross at the same time."
3.Hunan Satellite TV is losing its leading position? There's reason for saying this.In 2012,the reality talent show, the voice of China,on the Zhejiang Television became the most popular program in China.
The reaon for its popularity was really because its excellent quality?Or can we assume that without any opponent,we can't tell a contestant is winning because he is really talented or because there's no comparison?
The administrative department really contributed a lot in the popularity of the voice of China. In the past, there was no other draft shows(选秀节目) ranked as high as Super Girl and Super Boy.Even though there were some draft shows which seemed to share the popularity,it never turned out ture. All the other draft shows were shodowed by the ones on Hunan TV.One example was that since draft shows of Hunan TV were broadcast on Friday night, the draft shows of other stations were shifted to Saturday or Sunday. However,Hunan TV didn't get their permission for broadcasting shows in 2012.
And if this were not bad enough,SARFT did a great favor for it.SARFT issued a regulation, saying that all draft shows should be broadcast after 10:30 pm at night.Zhejiang TV declared long before the regulation that since was"no audition(海选),no PK,no rise in rank,no voting,no champion",its program was never a draft show. So,in 2012,all the opponents of Zhejiang TV had to broadcast their draft shows after 10:30 pm while the voice of China was permitted to be broadcast in prime time.
If you really think about it,there's no esential different between a draft show and the voice of China. It also selected people from all over the country, how did they say this were different from a draft show?No PK,really?PK doesn't mean one versus one!A team versus a team is called PK too. And"no rise in rank?"is just a switch of concepts because at the end of every game, some left the stage and some stayed. If there was really"no champion",how come there was only one"good voice of China"at the final round? All these were rising in rank,in disguise(隐性).
Under such cimcumstance, the voice of China even got praise. We are not saying that it is not a good show:we are saying that there's regret about the show since it had no opponent.

58.The following factors are important in making the voice of China popular EXCEPTA
A.the unique quality of the voice of China

C.the favorable broadcasting time.
D.the shortage of good opponents
