Thomas Alva Edison (爱迪生)was awarded more patents(专利) on inventions than any other American. When he died in 1931,Americans wondered how they could best show their respect for him .One suggestion was that the nation observe a minute or two of total blackout . All electric power would be shut off in homes, streets, and factories. Perhaps this suggested plan made Americans realize fully what Edison and his inventions mean to them. Electric power was too important to the country. Shutting it off for even a short time would have led to complete confusion. A blackout was out of the question.

Dear Lan Lan ,

I’m now writing to you at Hartsop,a village in the Lake District,a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色) in England,I come here to spend Christmas with an English couple. This was planned for overseas students to know the British ways of life by living with British families.

We came two days before Christmas and during our stay,we have had everything we expected:Christmas turkey,Christmas cake,Christmas puddings,Christmas parties and gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的),but above all these,we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客) of the family,Roger and Anne Marie.

Anne Marie is a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who is a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do. In the evenings,we all sit around the fireplace with Tim,a lovely dog,by our side. Like long? time ?no ?see friends,we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.

After three months away from home,we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person?to?person feeling, instead of a British?to?Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.

How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about“when we go back home next year...”and soon we will turn this into“when we go back home THIS year...”for the New Year’s Day is coming. Miss you.

Love,

Gao Wen

Stamp collecting is easy when you do it as a hobby. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. Sometimes stamps can be got from many sources (来源) for free.

Getting Started

If you have no stamps at all,you might want to buy a packet of 500 or 1,000 different worldwide stamps from a hobby shop or stamp dealer to get started. One good choice is eBay. Try entering phrases like “worldwide stamps” in the search box. However, even if you want to specialize in collecting stamps,my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning. Start off collecting stamps from many sources for free until you have collected enough stamps and had enough experience.

Sorting Stamps

Assume(假设) you have some stamps and they are on paper. Before you take them off the paper, you should sort the stamps, for example,by country. This is because dealing with stamps is much easier when they are on paper. When you take them off the paper, they become easy to bend, crease, and tear easily.

Trimming(修剪)Stamps

Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it,even if it appears to be loose enough to do so. First, trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors making sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. I suggest that you leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp when you trim the paper before you are good at doing it.

1.This passage is written for people who________.

A. have no money to collect stamps

B. want to sell their stamps

C. want to collect stamps

D. don’t know how to sort stamps

2.According to the writer,at the very beginning,stamp?collecting beginners shouldn’t________.

A. collect common stamps

B. borrow some stamps from their friends

C. act as an inexperienced collector

D. spend a lot of money in buying stamps

3.What does the writer suggest NOT do when trimming stamps?

A. Pull at them to take them off the paper backing when they look loose.

B. Trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors.

C. Leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp.

D. Make sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps.

If you want to keep fit, please refer to the following:

Move More

Make it a daily to find ways to move your body.1.Climb stairs instead of taking the elevator. Walk your dog; play with your kids. It doesn’t have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute dance class. But that’s great when you’re up to it. At the same time, move more.

Quit Smoking

Ever since 1960 when it was announced that smoking was harmful to health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products. Just recently, we’ve seen more and more teens smoking. Could it be the Hollywood influence?2.Take care! Warn your children against smoking.

3.

While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney(肝肾) disease and cancer.

Reduce Stress

Easier said than done, stress comes in many ways.4.Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like such as walk on the beach or in a park, read a good book, visit a friend, listen to relaxing music, and watch a funny movie.

Protect Yourself from Pollution

If you can’t live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms.5.Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good.

A.Avoid Excessive Drinking

B.There are many things you can do to move your arms and legs.

C.Think carefully about what you will do.

Wandering around the airport terminal(航站楼), after learning my flight had been delayed four hours, I heard an announcement, “If anyone near Gale A-4 understands any Arabic, please come to the gate immediately.” I went there and saw an old woman in full traditional Palestinian dress crying on the floor. A young man from the airport staff asked me to talk to her to find out what was her problem. He said she started to cry when hearing the announcement about the flight.

I knelt down, put my arms around her and asked her what was wrong. My Arabic wasn’t good enough but I managed to get my meaning across. She soon stopped crying and told me she had thought the flight had been canceled. She needed to be in El Paso for an important medical treatment the next day. I said, “You’ll be fine. You’ll get there but only a few hours late. Who is going to pick you up? Let’s call him.” We called her son. I spoke to him in English. I told him I would stay with his mother till we boarded the plane. Later, I called my dad whose Arabic was better and asked him to talk to her. She looked much more relaxed while talking on the phone.

Later she took out a sack of homemade cookies stuffed with dates and nuts and offered them to all the women at the gate: the traveler from Argentina, the mom from California, the lovely woman from Laredo. Everybody smiled and accepted her cookies to eat. And my new best friend and I were holding hands, while the others around us were talking with each other with different accents. I almost wanted to hug all those other women too. I looked around that gate and thought to myself, “This is surely the world want to live in.”
