A ban on smoking in public places has come into effect in China — home to a third of the world’s smokers. The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year. But the rules have been criticized, because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them. Many business owners hate rules that force them to ban smoking because many customers do not like the rules and complain. The rules do not allow smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theaters, but not at the office. Employers have a duty to warn staff off the dangers of smoking but do not have to forbid them from lighting up at their desks.

Shanghai introduced similar rules a year ago, but people do not seem to take much notice of them. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar. The problem is that the rules do not include punishments for businesses or individuals who ignore them.

It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking. Research suggests that only one in four knows the harm cigarettes of second-hand smoke can cause. Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to reduce the numbers dying from smoking-related diseases. But it is hard to deal with the problem and there is still a long way to go.

1.The number of smokers in China makes up about ______ of the world’s smokers.

A. 66% B. 44% C. 33% D. 55%

2.Why have the rules been criticized by some people?

A. Because those people don’t want to be punished.

B. Because they do not include punishments for those who ignore the rules.

C. Because the rules are ignored by all the people who smoke.

D. Because nobody takes notice of the rules.

3.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

A. How to punish those who ignore the ban.

B. What the dangers of smoking are.

C. Why it’s hard to ban smoking.

D. How the non-smokers suffer from second-hand smoke.

Got big plans for Friday night? That's OK, we don't either.

Guess we'll all have to make do by watching the celestial(天空的) show that will take place that night.

First, there will be a full moon. That's always fun, but this one will be a little more special. It's known as a “snow moon.” The name comes from the fact that the heaviest snows usually fall during February, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

But if that's not special enough, there's also an eclipse(月食) that night. It'll be a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning it’s a partial eclipse that leaves sections of the moon darkened by the earth's shadow. No, it won't be as spectacular as those "blood moon" eclipses, It'll be subtler. The level of darkness it reached during the eclipse may or may not be apparent; it just depends on where you are when you view it.

In North America, the eclipse begins at 5:34 p.m ET and ends at 9:53 p.m. ET, according to astronomy website EarthSky. The eclipse will be at its height around 7:44 p.m.ET.

If that's still not enough, let's throw in a comet(彗星)to the night's festivities.

Comet 45P (it has a much longer name, but we won't burden you with it here) is visible as it flies by Earth. The comet will get within 7.4 million miles of the planet as it makes its closest approach this weekend, according to Universe Today.

Comet 45P will be the most visible a couple of hours after the eclipse, so look to the skies again around 3 a.m.ET Saturday and find the greenish-blue light with a tail.

And don't forget, a total big-time solar eclipse will streak across the United States on August 21st.

1.According to the text, what can be viewed on Friday night?

A. A blood moon. B. A total solar eclipse.

C. A partial lunar eclipse. D. A comet without a tail.

2.If you want to see Comet 45P, you will need to ________.

A. wait around 7:44 p.m.ET B. stay up until 9:53 p.m.ET

C. wake up before 3:00 a.m.ET D. start watching at 5:34 p.m.ET

3.The author writes the text with the purpose of ________.

A. introducing basic astronomy to the media

B. sharing new discoveries with astronomy researchers

C. promoting astronomical events among science students

D. informing average readers of recent celestial phenomena

4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Comet 45P will be visible as it approaches the earth

B. Penumbral lunar eclipse will happen on Friday night

C. Suggestions of fun scientific exhibitions for the coming weekend

D. Eclipse, full moon, comet team up to put on a show on Friday night

A new article in The Wall Street Journal has given us a deeper understanding of the relationship between what we earn and how we feel.1.Well, not true. Stamp collecting is easy when you do it as a hobby. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. Sometimes stamps can be got from many sources (来源) for free.

Getting Started

If you have no stamps at all,you might want to buy a packet of 500 or 1,000 different worldwide stamps from a hobby shop or stamp dealer to get started. One good choice is eBay. Try entering phrases like “worldwide stamps” in the search box. However, even if you want to specialize in collecting stamps,my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning. Start off collecting stamps from many sources for free until you have collected enough stamps and had enough experience.

Sorting Stamps

Assume(假设) you have some stamps and they are on paper. Before you take them off the paper, you should sort the stamps, for example,by country. This is because dealing with stamps is much easier when they are on paper. When you take them off the paper, they become easy to bend, crease, and tear easily.

Trimming(修剪)Stamps

Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it,even if it appears to be loose enough to do so. First, trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors making sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. I suggest that you leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp when you trim the paper before you are good at doing it.

B. Trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors.

C. Leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp.

D. Make sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps.
