Warley Woods Community Trust Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!

Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising(筹款) event on Saturday,17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. In recognition of locally bom Jack Judge, who wrote the song It's a long way to Tipperary 100 years ago,we'11 be walking the distance between Warley Woods and ippemry. It's indeed a long way — 260 miles — so we need a lot of people to do a lot of one-mile laps round the Woods. The more people that you can get to sponsor you,the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. Sponsor forms are available from the shop at the Woods or on our website.

There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. Lots of issues were discussed and ideas considered. The group will be meeting again and will have the opportunity to do some practice interviews before starting to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the proj ect. If you or anyone you know is interested, please contact(联系) Viv Cole at the office.

Finally, don't forget the Easter Egg Roll on Bank Holiday Monday,9th April, starting at 11 a.m. Bring your £1. 00 entry money and your own hard-boiled and decorated egg to roll down the hill in the Woods. The first past the finishing line will win a very large chocolate egg! This year, due to popular demand, there will also be an Adults’Easter Egg Roll following the children's competition.

                                          A

Many American high schoolers participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular(课外的)activities such as sports and clubs. Personally,I enjoy playing tennis for my school's varsity team(校队) .Throughout the past decade,my high school,South, has been consistently ranked as one of the top teams in New Jersey.

In my first year of high school,I was espe-cially nervous for tryouts(选拔赛) .The night before,I still remember lying in bed, feeling both anxiety and excitement. When I got to my school's courts,I saw a crowd of unfamiliar faces. Coach Crawbuck stressed how the team would be set up I through challenge matches. Afterwards, the coach :paired us together to begin playing games. Unlike many other sports, tennis relies only on the individual player's abilify. Because of this,I had :to make sure that all my points were not only consistent but strategic(有战略的) as well.

At the beginning,I was ranked number 19 on the team. The second year,I improved greatly, ranking number 10. One day,I visited NJ.com to even find an introduction to myself! It was exciting to see that I was listed as a part of the tennis community.

Soon, school started again, and our team began to play matches against other schools. Sometimes,it was stressful knowing that our team s undefeated record could not be broken. Once,my partner Alyssa and I played a five-hour match against South Brunswick simply so that our team could keep this standing. Needless to say,it was very exhausting!

The term “tennis team” doesn't sound right

since the sport is singular in its nature. However, through my experiences with tennis,I have gotten to meet so many amazing players who have become my close friends. Not only does the team bond though our time on the courts, but also through the events the captains organize. Overall, playing tennis has become second nature for me and I don't know where I would be without it.

   A. the players,personal ability matters~more

   B. the players have to compete strategically

   C. the players should keep .consistent records

   D. the players are chosen through challenge matches

23. Through the exhausting match, the author and her partner aimed to .

   A. reduce their pressure

   B. break their own record

   C. strengthen their position

   D. show their personal abilities

24. What kind of feeling does the author show for her tennis team?

   A. Doubt.

   D. Disappointment.

                                    B

A weather map is an important tool for geographers. A series of three or four maps presents a continuous picture of weather changes. Weather forecasters are able to determine the speed of air masses and fronts; to determine whether a pressure area is deepening or becoming shallow and whether a front is increasing or decreasing in intensity (强度) .They are also able to determine whether an air mass is keeping its original characteristics or taking on those of the surface over which it is moving. Thus,a most important function of the map is to show a general picture of conditions in the atmosphere at a given time.

All students of geography should be able to interpret a weather map accurately. Weather maps contain a large amount of information about weather conditions existing at the time of observation over a large geographical area. They reveal in a few minutes what otherwise would take hours to describe. The United States Weather Bureau issues information about approaching storms, floods, frosts and all climatic conditions in general. Twice a month it issues a 30-day “out-look” which is a rough guide to weather conditions likely to occur over broad areas of the United States. These 30-day outlooks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels which often set the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms.

Much effort is being made today to achieve more accurate weather predictions. With the use of electronic instruments and earth satellites, big gains have taken place recently in recognizing and tracking storms over regions which have few meteorological stations(气象台). A lot of experiments are also in progress for weather modification(人工改变天气) studies. But the limitations of weather modification have produced few results except in the seeding(撒干冰) of super cooled, upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional rainfall on the windward(上风的) side of mountain ranges.

She led the party to victory in the 2004 and 2009 elections but refused to become Prime Minister, when the opposite party raised the question of her Italian origin.

Usually, there is a(n) 44 to follow, maybe a park to run around or a river to run along. Even on the most 45 running routes, however, there is something different to see.                  This 55 to anyone, anywhere,at any time. Running is the most 56 sport in the world. No specialist equipment is necessary; just a good pair of 57 ,and maybe an iPod if you want to run with some music. Running can 58 stress and it is also a sport in which anyone can 59 ,if given a little bit of time, practice and patience. Nike really did get it right with the slogan “Just do it!” 一 you won’t 60 it.

39 It made the government deliver food aid to the Nipomo camp, where several thousand people were hungry and living in terrible conditions. However,by that point Owens and her family had moved on.

Lange's photo became an image of the Great Depression(大萧条) ,but the migrant mother's identity remained a mystery to the public for many years because Lange hadn’t asked her name. 40Owens died at the age of 80 in 1983.                                       D

Dear Sir / Madam,

I live next to your school in Grasmere Road and I am writing regarding the very bad behaviour of some of your younger students. In addition to this,I should like to bring to your attention to the irresponsibility of certain members of your staff when supervising (监督) students, evening activities.

Firstly, concerning the students' behaviour,I should like you to make it very clear to those students walking along Grasmere Road towards the station that my front garden is not a place where people are allowed to leave their rubbish. When they leave school in the afternoons, they pass my house and throw empty cans, waste paper and even cigarette packets(although most of them are below the age for smoking) on my grass.

Could you also please ask your students not to .... shout and use bad language in the street,as this is harmful to the reputation of both your school and the area?

Regarding certain members of your staff, you are perhaps unaware of the fact that their evening activities sometimes continue well beyond ten and the noise is too loud. Last Thursday night the noise did not stop until 10:30 pm. Surely the members of i staff supervising these activities could bring the events to a close at a suitable moment.

I know that I am speaking for many families in the area when I ask you to speak to your students and staff about these matters.

Should they continue to be so inconsiderate,I shall be forced to take matters further and shall have no choice but to write to the council(地方议会) .

                                                 Yours  faithfully,

                                                 Mrs J Barker

33. The text is a letter of.

34. Which of the following is destroying the area's reputation in Mrs J Barker's eyes?

   A. Throwing rubbish.

   B. Smoking cigarettes.

   C. Making too much noise.

   D. Shouting and using bad language.

35. What is Mrs J Barker going to do if these matters are not solved?

   A. Turn to a lawyer.

   B. Take further action.

   C. Keep an eye on them.

   D. Continue to write to the school.
