The most frequent arguments for travel broadening the mind are that you get to interact(互动) with many different 41,ways of life and new experiences. In general this should be the case. 42,how much it broadens your mind depends as much on how you travel as where. 43 you go to Thailand and spend most of your time in a hotel, what you,re seping isn't 44 Thai culture. But if you take time to 45 its temples or stay with a family and immerse ( yourself in their 46 ,you might begin to get a good 47 of it. If you 48 anything out of your comfort zone, then you won't make the most of your 49 ,wherever you go. Of course travel 50 the mind if you’ re open to it and equip yourself with the knowledge you need for where you’ re headed; and after all, expanding our horizons is 51 to our growth and progress as human beings.

We're told that broadening the mind comes from challenging yourself,52 , learning and that this can in part be achieved by travelling. But is broadening the mind the only 53 reason for travelling? What if you 54 want to enjoy some much needed rest and 55 ?

How much distance you cover doesn't show how adventurous you are. You can go halfway round the world, but if you just spend all your time 56 shopping malls, you can 57experience the real workings of the culture you’ve landed in. It's up to you whether or not you come back from another country with a 58 perspective on things. Travel doesn’t automatically broaden the mind. If you’ re a narrow-minded bore at home, the 59 are that travel just makes you a narrow-minded bore 60 a plane ticket. And what of those who don't,can't or won’t travel? Are they forever (注定) to an “unbroadened”

view on life? I'm sure they would beg to differ.

                             Endangered species

An endangered species is any type of plant or animal that is in danger of disappearing forever. If a species,or type,of plant or animal dies out completely,it becomes extinct.

Animals and plants depend on each other and their environment to survive. When their environment,or habitat, changes or disappears, plants and animals may become endangered. 36

Humans can cause species to become endangered as well. Humans pollute habitats with garbage, car fumes (尾气) and factory waste. They destroy habitats by clearing land for roads, buildings and farms. 37

The arrival of a new species in a habitat is another threat. 38 The species already in the habitat may not be able to compete against the newcomer. For example, mongooses(猫鼬) brought to Jamaica in the 1800s killed many native animals.

The list of endangered animals includes many large,well-known animals. The tiger and both African and Asian elephants are endangered. Several types of whale are also endangered. Endangered plant species range from tiny mosses(藓类植物) to towering trees.

In the 1960s people became aware that many species were endangered. Today many countries have made it illegal to harm, catch, kill,or sell endangered species. 39 The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources keeps lists of endangered species. The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund help to set aside land for threatened wildlife. 40 Such programs have helped to increase the populations of many endangered animals.

   A. The panda survives only in remote parts of China and in zoos.

   B. Nature preserves and zoos help endangered animals to reproduce.

   C. They also may hunt and kill too many of certain types of animals.

   D. Often the new species spreads freely because it has no natural enemies.

   E. Natural disasters or changes in the climate can harm or destroy habitats.

   F. People have cut down many of these trees to build houses, ships and furniture.

   G. In addition, many organizations work to keep endangered species from becoming extinct.

                                         D

“Community” is not a concept that is easy to define (定义) . In this essay I will examine what turns individuals into a community, and discuss some different types. I will also look at what all communities have in common, the benefits they offer and draw conclusions about their increasing importance.

The word “community” may make you think of traditional communities in the developing world, where large families live together. We may also imagine the neighbours as people who are happy to help out whenever it is needed. The 5纪r以?仏(老套的) view is that of a village, where people have little but can feel very rich because everyone takes responsibility for the welfare of the others.

On the other hand, there are other types of communities: ultramodern(超现代的) ones, where the community members are unlikely to have actually met each other. These are online communities, where people blog or chat about particular issues that are important to them. They come across others on websites and may develop a relationship there with like-minded people, discussing the same topics. The view is often that these are artificial connections between people who are,in effect, still isolated(孤立的) strangers.

In reality, the connections are real. Moreover, there are many types of communities in between these extremes: people who join clubs, who sign up with voluntary, political or other organizations,or who take part in group discussions in their local area. They may be campaigning about issues or simply getting together for companionship and support.

Human beings are social by nature,so it should not be a surprise that we organize ourselves in groups. However, there is more going on: these groups provide something that we cannot achieve on our own. The main benefit of being part of a larger group is strength in numbers. For example,we can access and share more information,we can take part in team sports,we can complain and campaign more effectively and even if we are just having a chat, online or in person,we can feel supported in whatever we do.

Whatever forms communities take, what defines them is the sense of identity and safety that they provide for their members: the knowledge that there are people who we have something in common with and who can be relied on when we need each other.

32. In traditional communities,people.

   A. live in a large family

   B. are wealthy but unhappy

   C. help and care about each other

   D. are isolated and don't have connections

33. According to the text, online community members .

   A. develop a close working relationship

   B. share opinions about issues on websites

   C. communicate with each other in person

34. Paragraph 5   mainly talks about .

   A. the types of community

   B. the culture of community

   C. the benefits of community

   D. the definition of community

35. Communities provide their members with.

   A. a sense of identity and safety

   B. a sense of social responsibility

   C. chances of meeting new people

   D. chances of developing their interests

                                       C

Impressionism is a form of art which began in the 1870s. When you look closely at an impressionist painting, you see little dots of different colored paints. When you move away from the picture, the dots of colors blend together and the painting looks like it has light playing on the people and objects in the picture.

Impressionist art is different from traditional art. Traditional painters were interested in the form of objects. The impressionists were interested in light and color; The impressionist painters wanted to paint natural light which was lively and bright. They tried to express the feeling of pure sunshine in their paintings. When traditional artists mixed paints, they could not create the feeling of bright, natural light. Therefore, instead of mixing colors, the impressionists used small dots of pure colors.

The viewers, eyes put these unmixed colors together the same way they add colors in light together. When you look at an impressionist painting,it feels the same as when you look at an object in lively, natural light.

Traditional painters worked inside. Impressionist painters worked outside because they wanted to p^int the effect of sunlight on objects. Monet (1840-1926) , for example, made a series of paintings of a haystack(干草堆) .Every morning he went to a field with eight or ten paintings. All day,he sat in front of a haystack painting. Every hour he worked on a different picture. All of these paintings are pictures of the haystack. However, they do not look the same because sunlight has different effects on objects at different hours. Monet made his paintings directly from nature. His study of the haystack is an hour-by-hour record of the artistry of light.

28. Why are there many dots on an impressionist painting?

   A. In order to show different painting techniques.

   B. impressionist paintings are dark and dull

   C. impressionists paid more attention to light and color

   D. impressionists mixed paints to create bright and natural light

   B. painting indoor objects

   C. working early in the morning
