One thing Britain is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK would be complete without a visit to one of the thousands of pubs across the country.

Pubs play an important part in the social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social classes mix to talk,do business,or just spend a couple of quiet hours before heading home in the evening.

There are many different types of beer available in pubs. Traditional British beer is called bitter,or ale,and is usually served at room temperature. As a result, the British are famous for their " warm beer"!

If you prefer a cold beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow in color whereas bitter is usually a darker brown. Another type of beer is stout—you may have heard of Guinness, which is a type of stout. This is a cold, black beer and takes a long time to pour,so don't be surprised if you have to wait for it.

All beers are served as pints (500 ml) or halves (250ml) . To order, you need to ask for a pint or half, and then name the beer. So,you could say "A pint of bitter, please."

Another drink is cider. This is like beer, but it is made from apples so it can taste sweet.

Wine, red or white,is normally available in all pubs,as are spirits such as whisky, gin or vodka. These are served as singles (25ml) or doubles (50ml) .

It is not, however, necessary to drink alcohol. Nonalcoholic drinks are called soft drinks. You can have juice, lemonade or cola, among others.

If you visit a pub in a group,it is important to pay for your "round". This means that you buy a drink for everyone in your group. Not buying your round is a big social mistake!Remember that you need to order and pay for your drinks at the bar.

So,follow these tips if you want to get the most out of visiting a pub, and, "Cheers!"

Key West got its name when it was given a name Cayo Hueso by early Spanish explorers, who found human bones along the shore. That name was eventually developed to Key West.

In 1820,the island was bought from the Spanish for $2,000,quite a big sum in those days, and the purchaser was John Simonton,an Alabama businessman―a smart businessman,it might be added, whose name and descendants live on here and remain a powerful influence in the area.

Pirates were eventually driven out and the island's mixed population of English Bahamians,Southerners and transplanted northerners rose to 2 ,700,many of them happily engaged in the business of wrecking ships, then salvaging (打捞) the cargoes.

So profitable was that enterprising career,in fact, that one wrecker,a Bahamian named William Curry,is said to have worked his way to a million dollars, making him Florida's first millionaire and wealthy enough to buy a $100,000 Tiffany table service.

In the 1850s,however,a lighthouse was built, putting a bit of a damper on the wrecking business, and the town's industry began to change. A terrible fire destroyed the town in 1859. About the same time, cigar makers, fleeing war in Cuba, arrived in Key West, where they established a flourish industry. Key West's port was a hot spot, too, and by the 1880s,the city was said to be the wealthiest in the nation.

It was pretty much downhill from there until promoters in these Keys discovered that the real gold in these islands was incessant ( nonstop, continuous) sunshine, clear seas and iconoclastically bohemian (攻击传统观念和风俗的人) residents, all items of surpassing interest to the winterweary and the weird watchers.  Working women over 70 caught in the retirement trap at 74 ,Marie Maes is struggling to find work.

Even though she spent four 1        working in Colorado hospitals and Seattle nursing homes, the retired licensed practical 2        lives just above the poverty line on little more than $12 a day after she pays her rent.

She is among a nearrecord and 3        number of women working well into their 70s,thanks to smaller Social Security checks,4 careers, smaller pensions, longer life spans than men and bad 5        planning.

Before Microsoft came along, there really was no software industry~just a few companies selling very highpriced software only to companies, big companies. The idea of lowcost software that would be empowering (赋予.... 权力) for individuals and that there could be literally around the world hundreds of thousands of these successful companies―that was part of the Microsoft dream. And in fact, the software industry is 10 ,000 times bigger because of the work we do. Microsoft has a uniform platform that has gotten out to go around the world. And so in every country we've helped companies grow up,create jobs, pay taxes around the software world. The main competitors who don't like us are actually hardware companies who have been used to charging very high prices for the hardware and the PCs changed that.

It's hard to think of a business that's had a more positive effect for customers than the PC business. The rate of product improvement provides its ability to create and stay in touch. You know the closest comparison is when publishing came along and people had books. Of course books created a problem. You know, the people wanted to control things didn't like books;the people who wanted to sell highpriced hand written things didn't like the printing press. But actually it was something that people knew really that it was very positive. The same thing's happened with the P C. There's no company that in terms of our work has gotten as positive feedback and has gotten as broad a set of users. Those users are always telling us what they'd like to see us make better, and that's partly why it's a fun business because we get to make new versions of the software all the time.

Well, the vision of Microsoft is about information as you want it,any time, anywhere, any place. And this is an overall strategy about making it easier to write software, easier to share data, revolutionizing user interface with the speech and handwriting. And making reading off the computer as good or better than paper and so today we will see that the horizons for software will let us get so much more than even what we have now.

(   ) 5. How did Microsoft change the software industry?

   A. By selling highpriced software to the big companies.

   D. By making a competition with the hardware companies.

(   ) 6. Which of the following is NOT the Microsoft dream?

   A. Producing more and more lowpriced software.

   B. Paying more attention to some big companies.

   C. Making the computer easier for ordinary people to use.

(   ) 7. Why did the writer offer the example of books in Paragraph 2?

   A. To show the great effect of the PC business.

   C. To show the problem the books created.

   D. To foretell the computer will take the place of the book.

(   ) 8. What's the writer's attitude towards the future of Microsoft?

   A. Positive. B. Suspicious. C. Negative. D. Critical.

(   ) 9. What will the following part of the passage be about?

   A. The developments on PC in the future.

   B. The ways to sell software in the world.

   C. The history of software in America.

   D. The strategy about writing software.

Farmers may not be able to prevent natural disasters, but they can at least try their best to reduce losses.

For example, they can plant crops that are more likely to survive extreme weather. In northcentral Vietnam, people with small farms do not plant rice between September and December. Seasonal rains might destroy the rice. So instead, they plant lotus seeds on raised beds. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says the lotus seeds bring a good price in local markets.

Farmers in the Philippines are showing new interest in crops like winged beans, string beans, arrowroot and cassava. The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center says traditional crops like these can survive the fierce storms that often strike the islands.

The United Nations says some African farmers grow bambara groundnuts during long dry periods. The seeds of this droughtresistant plant can be boiled for eating or for making flour.

In some parts of the world, farmers grow vetiver grass. Researchers in Thailand wrote about vetiver in 2007 in the journal Science Asia. They noted that the grass can absorb and control the spread of harmful waste waters, like those from pig farms.

Agricultural expert and author William Rivera says vetiver resists difficult conditions. It reduces damage from heavy rains. And vetiver planted on earthen dams may strengthen them against breaks and flooding.

William Rivera also speaks approvingly of alfalfa. Its deep roots can find and take up groundwater. Those roots also help hold the soil against winds. And alfalfa can be a valuable food source for animals.

The deep and extensive roots of sunflowers make them another good candidate for resisting extreme conditions. The tall plants have brightly colored heads that provide seeds and oil.

North Dakota grows more hectares of sunflowers than any other American state. But North Dakota is better known as a top wheat producing state.

Hans Kandel works at the North Dakota State University Extension Service in Fargo. He says farmers in some parts of North Dakota plant wheat that is ready to harvest in only about one hundred days. That way it can grow before the hot,dry months of July through September.

(   ) 3. From the last paragraph we can see that the farmers in North Dakota         .

   B. are good at taking advantage of the weather conditions

   C. don't have enough knowledge of weather and farming

   D. plant more sunflowers than wheat

(   ) 4. From this passage we may safely conclude that         .

   A. weather conditions are always decisive factors in agriculture

   B. some crops can help farmers to fight against disasters

   C. the species of the world are changing quickly

   D. agriculture is developing fast in the world

Having visited my two children,I left the hospital and headed for the grocery store, truly exhausted. Today I had passed CPR(嬰儿心肺复苏术) exam required before I could take 8-week-old Joel home from the hospital. However,I still worried about performing CPR in a moment of crisis.

For the past several days,I'd been trying to accept my 6-year-old daughter Jenna's diagnosis, juvenile diabetes (儿童糖尿病) .In addition to the CPR exam,I'd spent the day reviewing how to test Jenna's blood and give her insulin (豉岛素) shots. Now I was buying the food to balance the insulin that would sustain Jenna's life.

I grabbed my purse, locked the car and went into the store. The first thing I needed to pick up was a grain box,but it had to be "sugar free",so I chose a box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes and continued shopping.

Eventually,I walked down the canned fruit and juice section looking for apple juice. I wasn't sure how much I would need to keep Jenna's sugar up. I grabbed a couple sixpacks and placed them in my cart. Frustrated by feelings of total inadequacy,I crumpled up (揉铍) my grocery list, and started crying.

"Honey, are you all right?" a gentle voice asked. Absorbed in my own thoughts,I hadn't even noticed the woman shopping alongside of me. "Honey, are you a little short of cash?" she asked me.

I slowly dropped my hands from my face and looked into eyes of the silvery haired woman. "I have enough money. I'm here shopping for groceries so that I can bring my children home from the hospital tomorrow. " I said.

"Home from the hospital! What a celebration, you should have a party!”

This stranger took my grocery list, smoothed it out,and became my personal shopper. She stayed by my side until each item on my list was checked off. Then with a hug and a smile, she sent me on my way.

While dragging the groceries into my house I realized the lesson this woman had taught me. "My kids are coming home from the hospital!" I shouted with joy. "Joel is off life support. Jenna and I can learn how to manage her diabetes and give her shots properly. " I giggled (唂唂地笑) to myself. "I have a reason to celebrate!"

Chatting with friends online in English is an approach to enjoying the delight brought by using a foreign language as a real tool of communication. But I don't think it is the best way to improve our English.

Firstly,as you know, when you are chatting, you have no time and energy to pay attention to the grammar and it is common to spell words in wrong ways, and no teacher will check and correct errors for you. So if you overlook such kind of mistakes and fall into the habit of spelling and writing without thinking carefully, you will most likely forget the Standard English and totally be confused eventually. Here,I take the liberty to suggest that you should remember to confirm what you have "said" online as soon as possible by turning to your dictionaries and grammar books after being offline.

Secondly, during the spell of chatting, you have to answer the same questions such as "where are u from","how old are u" etc. patiently in order to show your politeness. And I don't think they are good questions, even it is not too much to say they are dull and tasteless. In other words,it will make both you and your friend feel tiresome soon. As a result, the atmosphere of chatting will be frozen. I suggest you should switch your topic wisely at that time instantly. Otherwise, both of you will be in low spirit, let alone learn something from each other and improve your English level. The only benefit,I guess, you can get from it is killing your precious time in an expensive way.

When it comes to talking about the fee spent for being online,I think it is still too high to be accepted by most students and unfortunately the greater proportion of chatters (who like chatting in English) are students who are supported by parents. And each penny is drenched in parents' sweat.

So,my conclusion is that chatting with friends in English online can't be totally substituted for learning English in class, and if you want to improve your English overall, then, chat online properly not frequently and do more hard work after being offline.

On the fourblock walk to our house,I 1       my revenge. I would slam the front door upon entering, refuse to return her hug when she rushed over to me,and 2       never to speak to her again.

The house was empty when I arrived and I looked for a note on the refrigerator that might explain my mother's 3      ,but found none. My chin quivered (颤抖) with a mixture of heartbreak and 4       . For the first time in my life,my mother had let me down.

Then my mother did something completely 13       . She began to laugh. I could feel her trembling as the laughter shook her. It began quietly at first and then 14        in its velocity (速率) and volume.

I just sat still and didn't say anything while my husband and I were informed that two-year-old Kristi was retarded (智力迟顿的) .

When Kristi was old enough to attend school,we enrolled her in our neighborhood school's kindergarten at age seven. However, positive things began to happen to Kristi in her school, and to her schoolmates, too. When boasting (自夸) of their own accomplishments,Kristi's classmates always praised her as well; "Kristi got all her spelling words right today." No one added that her spelling list was easier than anyone else's.

Dunng Kristi's second year in school, there was a competition based on the year's music and physical education activities. Kristi was far behind in both music and motor coordination (运动协调) .My husband and I feared the day as well.

On the day of the program,Kristi pretended to be sick. Desperately I wanted to keep her home. But at last I pushed her onto the school bus.

Just as I had forced my daughter to go to school, now I forced myself to go to the program. When it was time for Kristi' s group to perform, I knew why Kristi had been worried. Her class was divided into relay teams. With her limp and slow, clumsy reactions, she would surely hold up her team.

The performance went surprisingly well, until it was time for the gunnysack (黄麻袋) race. Now each child had to climb into a sack from a standing position, jump to a goal line, return and climb out of the sack.

Kristi stood near the end of her line of players, looking nervous.

But as Kristi's turn to participate neared,a change took place in her team. The tallest boy in the line stepped behind Kristi and placed his hands on her waist. Two other boys stood a little ahead of her. The moment the player in front of Kristi stepped from the sack, those two boys grabbed the sack and held it open while the tall boy lifted Kristi and dropped her neatly into it. A girl in front of Kristi took her hand and supported her briefly until Kristi gained her balance. Then off she jumped, smiling and proud.

In the cheers of teachers, schoolmates and parents,I secretly thanked God for the warm, understanding people in life who make it possible for my disabled daughter to be like her fellow human beings.
