If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my 1ways to do this is by developing my own2actions. These little acts of kindness are 3 to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be 4 and helpful.
We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty and 5One of the exceptions to the beauty is the 6that some people throw out of their windows as they are 7on the rural roads. One of the few drawbacks to 8 the mountainous area is that public services, such as litter collection, are less 9 than those are closer to the city.
A helping action that I practice 10 with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We' ve become so 11 to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in exciting 12, "There' s some litter, Daddy, stop the 13 !" And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem 14 , but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically 15. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to 16 we live. He smiled at me and said, "I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good       17."
Picking up litter is only one of an 18 supply of possible helping actions. You might like holding a door open for people, 19 lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or removing snow off someone else' s driveway. Perhaps you might 20 something that seems effortless yet helpful. It' s fun, personally rewarding, and setting a good example. Everyone wins.

I have always heard the saying, “Any guy can be a ‘Dad’, but it takes a real man to be a ‘Father’.” This has become qutie true in my life since the birth of my son, Joshua. Since the birth of my son things have changed a lot in my life, but the changes have been 1! My wife and I have been through many 2 moments which have made both of us 3.
My son was born with some medical prombles that 4 his regular doctors. He was
5 several different medications, but he did not get any better. He had a bad breathing problem, and he could not keep his food down. My wife and I were both told many times by people that Joshua looked life he was born early; he had not gained much 6 since he was born.
As time progressed his regular doctor sent my wife and I to Louisville to a 7 by the name of Dr. Eld. He was astonished by my son’s condition, too. Many different tests were 8 on Joshua. The time spents there was very 9 for my wife and I. But we did make it through with God’s 10.
Joshua is one year and one month old now and has gotten much better since then. His
11 has been amazing and he is up to 27 pounds now. I keep telling my wife, that if he keeps growing like this he might get a football 12 sooner or later. There is saying that has helped me 13 these troublesome times. “Problems will either make you or 14 you.” When you think the darkest hours are upon you, remember the 15 is just in sight.

It was the summer of my freshman year of college. Instead of heading home for a nice long 1, my friends and I had decided to 2 and take some extra courses. We had 3 the top floor of an old house to live in. My bed was 4  into a stuffy (愁闷的)former laundry room and each night was a new 5 in humidity. Still, it felt 6 to be in my own place for the first time. After the first few weeks, 7 , the thrill faded and 8 set in. I found myself sitting alone each night 9 my home and my parents.
My summer holidays had always been a 10 time. I spent hours playing basketball and swimming. I talked to my Mom while she tended her flowers. I 11 helping my Dad drag firewood for the winter. And every night I sat at a dinner table full of delicious food 12 with love while my family filled the room with the sound of sweet 13. Now I found myself missing them 14 than ever.
Finally when my 15 were at their lowest, I heard a 16 at the door. I opened it and was 17 to see my parents standing there with big smiles to fill my 18 heart and a box full of food to feed my hungry friends. We spent the afternoon eating 19 , and just being together. It felt so good, and I felt so loved.
Victor Hugo wrote that, “The supreme happiness of life is the 20 that one is loved; loved for oneself, or better yet, loved despite oneself.” It was that gift of happiness that my parents gave me that afternoon and every day of my life.

My sister, Cathy, who lives in Vancouver, sent me a package full of Christmas gifts. She told me that she had 1it in advance to make sure it would arrive at my house weeks before the 2. Christmas was drawing near, but no package arrived. Cathy checked the tracking number every 3 with Canada Post, and every evening she would call me to 4 if there was any sign of it on our end.
The 5 always started with questions about the package, but twenty minutes later we would still be 6. We talked about our family, such as parents, our kids, 7and so on. Of course we also talked about our jobs. We had never made so much 8for each other! The talk always took us back to the hours we spend together in our childhood.
By Christmas Eve we finally had to 9the fact that the package was 10lost. On Christmas morning, Cathy got on the phone with everyone in my 11 and told them what she had sent. Later on, after a big Christmas dinner, I had forgotten all about the 12package when there was a knock on the door. Who could it be at such a time? As I 13the door, a man was standing there. “I 14 this is yours.” he said, holding a package. Just then I 15that it had been delivered to the wrong address. “I just got home from vacation,” he explained, “16I wanted you to have this in time to open for Christmas.” I thanked this 17stranger for taking so much trouble to 18this gift to us on Christmas Day, and 19thanked God that the package had been lost in the first place.
The real gift that holiday season was the new 20to my sister who lives far away from us. Now there’s one gift I never want to give back!

I was driving around downtown one afternoon in the winter. I 1 a red light and stopped. As I was 2, I saw a young guy standing on my left. He was 3 in the face and holding a cardboard sign with some 4 on it. When you’re in the heart of downtown, it’s pretty 5 to see homeless people asking for 6. Generally, I would pass them, but this time when I glanced over the sign, I 7
I can’t remember what the sign said exactly, but it was something like: “8 money / food, have stomach cancer, homeless, anything helps.”
I didn’t know why, but for some 9 this particular sign struck me. The 10 had just turned green, and there was a line of lunch rush hour traffic behind me. I went back and forth in my 11 a hundred times in that next 12 about whether I should do something. “Should I help? 13 on? Should I do something?”
I didn’t. I did nothing.
The traffic moved 14, and I went with it. About a block(街区)or two away, my heart had sunk simply for this guy. I felt so 15 for him. So, I decided to go back and ask him 16 I could buy him lunch and hear his story.
It took me about five minutes to 17 and back on to the same street where I had seen him. It was just five minutes — but he was 18.
“Where did he go so fast?” I wondered. So, there was 19 left to do except drive on.
If you get a special nudge(想做的事)from inside you, 20 consider acting on it. Don’t miss out — for yourself and for that other person.

I stepped into my hotel room which was surrounded by a(n)   1 king-size bed, flanked(两侧有)by overstuffed armchairs. “Wow,” I thought to myself. “Nice place.”
2 hotels. I love to enter a clean room, look out the window, or walk out in the morning  3  that each afternoon when I return, someone else will have made the bed.
The  4 is that unless Alison travels with me, I never sleep well in hotels. I miss my family. Even though Linus and Camille, aged 4 and almost 2, find a way to interrupt even the  5 night’s sleep at home, still, I’d rather be with them.
I’m deeply  6 by the parents who wake up too late with the realization: “My children grew up too  7 . In the busy and noisy career and life, I  8 their childhood.”
A hundred years from now, nobody will remember the car you drove or the large house you lived. The world might  9 greatly however, based on your  10 on the life of a small child. Your life will most certainly improve, if you pay attention to your important  11 , and make the choice to put her or him first. What could you do today to let your loved ones know how much they  12 to you? What will you do tomorrow? And the next day?
Think of one specific  13 that you can take, and take it. Challenge yourself to find new ways to  14 your appreciation and love on a daily basis.
Room service will never kiss you goodnight! Nothing  15 family.

The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two 1 systems on the whole.
The 2 of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are gestated(孕育) by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River 3 the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own 4. Then in Dang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture 5 went overseas to Japan, 6 into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same 7.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was 8 on the Mesopotamian Plain ---- the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known 9 the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also 10 waters. When the colonists of England 11 in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't 12 from the European one a lot.
At the same time, the difference of the language systems 13 the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language (see the picture below) while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I’m using to write this paper.
Other factors like human race difference counts as well. But what’s more, 14 the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no 15 from the other.

Three years ago, I had a job in a retail store (零售店). I 1 to talk to everybody and know what was going on in their 2. I remember a girl who started 3 there a few months after me. We seldom talked but we always 4 each other and smiled.
She always smiled in a really happy way 5 one day when we got to work in the 6department. She smiled as if she was the 7 girl in the world. I went up to her and asked, “What’s wrong with you?” She answered, “Why?” I said, “I could feel you’re very 8, but you’re always trying to 9it.”
Her mouth just dropped as if I had 10 her deepest secret, so we started talking. She told me 11she was feeling unhappy and why she was trying to 12 that nothing was wrong. Time went by and we became good friends. She’d always tell me I had 13 her life in so many ways.
Today that girl is one of my best 14. I really don’t know what I would do 15 her. She has been there for me in every 16 way a friend could be.
What I’m trying to say is that you never know 17 you’re helping yourself. I helped this girl never knowing that at the same time I was helping myself by finding a 18 friend.
So the next time you see a 19 and he needs someone who will 20 to him, wait and let him say what he wants to say. You never know, you might just end up helping yourself.

Do you know some people who just have all the luck? They seem to get all the 1 and you ask yourself: “Why don’t I get 2? Why don’t I get a great education?” But the real reason why most people are successful or lucky is that they’ve learned how to 3 themselves in a place so they can be lucky. They’ve learned how to, in a way, 4 their own luck!
I’m not 5 about dishonest or illegal ways. I’m talking about hard, 6 work. But successful people work smart. They keep improving and making the most of their abilities. Yet they also learn to 7 for help in things they themselves are not that good 8 doing. So we not only must make the most of our own special strengths, we must also learn our 9 and weaknesses.
A man recently got his lucky big break. Everyone said, “That guy’s so lucky!” But that man created his own luck 10 by arriving at the office early. He apologized and 11 when he was wrong. He even shared the credit and reward with others 12 he had done much of the work. He was never satisfied just to get 13 and do average work. He always 14 the extra effort to do his very best.
We have to work hard and do what it15to be on the way to luck and success when it comes. 16 , weMI miss it because we aren’t ready. You never know when the right opportunity will come your way, and when the right, important person is watching your excellent 17 and work. That’s when you’ll get your lucky break! But when you put your life in Jesus Christ’s 18 , the right important person is always 19 you and all that you do. Then he will20and bless vour life in manv wavs as vou do vour very best to please him in every thina every dav.

I never thought about the dangers of growing up during the war because I was only six then. My parents were 1 and both were busy with their work at a hospital. I was often left in the care of my grandmother. Grandma gave Aunt Tracy and I the 2 of taking lunch to my grandfather, her estranged (分居的) husband, who lived 3
As usual, 4 we left, Grandma repeated, "There may be war at any time, so stay on the side of the road. Be 5 not to spill (溢出) the food." Aunt Tracy and I 6 the lunch box and hurried to Grandpa’s place.
"Keep down and take cover!" Tracy cried out as we heard some 7. As we squatted (蹲) at the roadside, I started to feel 8. Grandpa preferred his food served 9. If we couldn’t get there on time, his lunch would turn cold! Not wanting the war to slow us down, I said, "Let’s just run for it!"
We tried all the ways we could think of to cross the road, but 10 seemed to work. Suddenly Tracy said, "Bullets travel in a straight line, so we can run in a zigzag (之字形)."Taking a deep breath, we set off again and ran wildly back and forth across the road., 11we managed to reach Grandpa’s apartment.
As an adult, I now know what my young mind couldn’t understand then: it’s impossible to go through life without 12. We may come across difficulties in our life, but we need to be brave, face the problem and carry on.
