The day finally came, when I had to leave the warm home where I’d grown up. I ran to the back yard, as tears came up from my heart. Suddenly I 1 a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to 2 my grandfather. “It isn’t 3, is it, Billy?” he said softly.
He gently 4 my hand in his, and then we walked, hand in hand, to the front yard, 5 a huge red rose-bush sat alone.
“What do you see here, Billy?” he asked. I looked at the flowers, not knowing 6 to say, and then answered, “I see something soft and 7, grandpa.”
He pulled me 8. “It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It’s that special place in your heart that makes them so.” “Billy, I 9 these roses when my first son was born. It was my 10 of saying ‘thank you’ to God. I 11to watch him pick roses for his mother. Then, as a young man of only 20, a terrible war robbed him of his life.” Grandpa slowly stood up. “Never say good-bye, Billy. Never 12 to the sadness and the loneliness. Instead, I want you to remember the joy and the 13 when you first said hello to a friend.”
A year later, my grandpa became very 14.Then all members of the family
were 15 back, and I returned to the old house. When it came to my 16, I took his hand as 17 as he had once taken mine.
“Hello, grandpa,” I 18.His eyes slowly opened and said, “Hello, my friend.” With a brief 19 he died. Suddenly, and truly, I knew what he had 20 about never saying good-bye — about refusing to give in to sadness.

My mother used to ask me what was the most important part of the body.Through the years I would1 the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought 2was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy." She said, "No.Many people are 3.But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."
Several years passed before she asked me again.Since 4my first attempt, I had often thought over the correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it5 be our eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not 6because there are many people who are blind."
7 the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her response to my answer was, "No, but you are getting8 every year, my child." Then last year, my Grandpa 9.Everybody was crying. My Mommy looked at me when it was our 10 to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?"
I was 11when she asked me this now.I always thought this was a12
between her and me.She saw the 13 on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It shows that you have really14 your life." I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, "My dear, the most important body part is your15 ."
I asked, "Is it because it holds up your head?" She replied, "No, it is because a crying friend or16one can rest their head on it .Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes in life, my dear.I only 17 that you have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on18you need it." Then and there I understood the most important body part is not a 19 one.It is sympathetic(同情的) to the pain of20.

Things of Value
Our area was just a few miles from the largest wildfire in Colorado’s history. We were on “evacuation alert (疏散警报)”. If we got the 1 to evacuate, we would have to leave immediately.
We 2suitcases with some clothes and set them by the door. We didn’t 3these things were valuable, but time was. We moved the computers, with which I wrote for newspapers and made a4. We took family pictures off the5and packed them in boxes. These were truly valuable and could not be replaced.
Then we took a hard look at all that 6. There was a lamp that belonged to my great grandmother. It was a 7 to my family. And there was the piano my wife 8 to play when she was a little girl. Not of great 9in itself, but another family connection. It was impractical to move everything from our home and store them for an indefinite (无限的) time. Some important items would have to stay behind.
The thought of 10something passed down from our families saddened me deeply,11I’d never been much attached to things. It’s about what they 12—family and love. They each had a(n) 13to tell, and some of them spoke in the 14 of our parents and grandparents.
The fire15 reached our home. We were lucky. And though I felt grateful that all was16, I also realized just how fortunate I had been 17. I saw just how rich my life had been.
Someone18said, “There are people so poor that the only thing they have is money.” And now I 19I was indeed rich. I was rich in family, rich in memories, rich in everything that really 20to me. I am wealthier than I ever believed possible.
It took a fire to teach me, I wonder if there is any other kind of wealth worth seeking.

The secret of staying slim could be as simple as keeping your mind on your meals. Research suggests that 1ourselves from distractions and concentrating completely on the food that is in front of us, helps us stay in 2. Such ‘mindful eating’ ensures that the 3is in tune with (协调) the body, enabling it to ‘hear’ the chemical 4that tell it that we are full。
Digestion 5 a complex series of signals between the gut (肠道)and the nervous system and it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to tell that the body has eaten enough. This means that if someone eats too 6, the signals will come slowly, leading to 7.
Scientists say that distractions make it8for us to remember what we have eaten. This absent-mindedness stops us from feeling 9 – and sends us reaching for some snacks later on. It is thought that our memory of what we have eaten plays a key role in 10 appetite. This means that distractions stop us from remembering the detail of what we have eaten – leaving us feeling 11.
Advocates of mindful eating 12chewing food slowly and taking note of its color, smell and flavor. Before 13 dieters should ask themselves if they are really hungry---and if not, distract themselves by going for a walk or reading. Done14, mindful eating may not only leave you 15, but also make you enjoy mealtimes.

There once was a little boy who often got angry for unknown reasons and ended up quarreling with his friends. His parents felt 1 but had no idea how to deal with the matter.
In order to help the son, his father gave him a bag of 2 and told him that every time he 3 his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the 4
At first the boy felt puzzled at his father's words, but he did as he was told. The first day the little boy had 5 thirty nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, 6   he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily 7 reduced. Three months later, the little boy discovered it was easier to 8 his temper than to hammer those nails into the fence. Finally the day came 9 the little boy did not lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the little boy now 10 one nail each day when he was 11 control his temper. The days passed and the little boy was 12 able to tell his father that all the nails were 13.
The father took his little boy 14 the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the 15 in the fence. The fence will never be the 16.When you say things in anger, they 17 a scar just like this one on the person to whom you lose your temper. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out.   18 many times you say “I'm sorry”, the wound is still there. A mental wound is as bad as a 19 one. The hurt and pain caused by the 20 are deeper than those caused by the hand.

I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard my name called for the leading role in our high school play. Mrs. Dermit, my drama(戏剧) teacher, had been looking for someone to play an energetic boy in a play. Luckily for me, she thought that I could act the 1.
That afternoon my friend Kevin and I talked 2 about the play. Although Kevin hadn’t been 3  for a role on the stage, his job with helping all the actors was important to the success of the play. I told him I was a little 4 because I had a lot of lines(台词)to memorize. “You can do it.” he said. I knew I could 5 on him: we had been friends since the third grade, and we made a good team.
Preparations for the play moved at a rapid pace. While doing his own work, Kevin also spent hours helping me learn my lines. He often said my lines with me by silently moving his lips. We 6 that he could probably play my part as well as I could.
Three days before the  7 night, everything was ready for the performance. But when I woke up with a high fever on the day of the play, the whole production came to a sudden 8. Everyone in the drama department was worried, 9 there was no way I could perform. The play was 10 to open in fewer than six hours, and we had no time to cancel. I tried to think of a way to help. Then it hit me---Kevin knew the 11 as well as I did. I called Mrs. Dermit to give her my 12. Within a few short hours, Kevin stood on the stage in costume(戏服) and makeup. The amusing lines he had 13 with me so many times made the crowd laugh and cheer. In a strange turn of events, Kevin and I had 14 the day for everyone by working as a team.
Of course, I was terribly disappointed to have missed my chance in the spotlight, but I was extremely 15 to have such a good friend.

Students have many 5of Megan, but the most vivid was her love for her family and the diligent6she gave to her classmates. They combined this with her7for learning and reading to create the Library of Love. This project honors Megan's special qualities. A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous. Late in the afternoon she gathered the1 to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a2. The woman arrived home that evening to find a beautiful table3 with their best dishes. Candles were softly burning. Her4 had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had given him the information5 , or··· did he just somehow know that she would not get the request6?
She found him in the kitchen and7 him the good news. They happily sat down to enjoy the wonderful8. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered card which was her husband's9 of writing. It read “Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you.”10 The supper, her husband went into the kitchen to11. She noticed that a second12 had fallen from his pocket.13 it up off the floor, she read, “Don't worry about not getting the raise! But you14 it anyway! These things will tell you how much I love you.”
Someone has said that the15 of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his wife is total16 and love, whether she succeeds or17. His love celebrates her victories and18 her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throw in their direction..
Upon receiving the Nobel for19, Mother Teresa said, “What can you do to20 to the world peace? Go home and love your family.” And love your friends. Love then without measure.

In front of the big Shibuya train station in Tokyo, there is a life-size bronze (青铜) statue of a dog. Even though the statue is very small when compared to the huge neon (霓虹灯) signs flashing, it isn’t 1 to find. It has been used as 2 since 1934 and today you will find hundreds of people waiting there for their friends to 3—just look for the crowds(人群).
Hachiko, an Akita dog, was born in 1923 and brought to Tokyo in 1924. His owner, Professor Eisaburo Uyeno and he were close friends that cannot be 4 right from the start. Each day Hachiko would go with his owner, a professor at the Imperial University, to Shibuya train station when he left for work. When he came back, the professor would always find the dog 5 waiting for him. 6, the professor died suddenly at work in 1925 before he could return home.
7 Hachiko was still a young dog, the bond between him and his owner was very strong and he 8 to wait at the station every day. Sometimes, he would stay there for days at a time, though some believe that he kept returning because of the food he was given by street vendors. Over time he became a 9 sight to people going to and from work every day. In 1934, a statue of him was put 10 the station. In 1935, Hachiko died at the place he last saw his friend alive.

When I began teaching in a university, I was invited to a workshop for new professors. I had 1 a long time learning what to teach, but not learning how to 2 it. Somehow, my university seemed to hope a weekend spent with experienced professors would 3 for that. My colleagues presented wellcrafted lectures about the tools they used. I enjoyed their 4, but do not remember a thing they said.
At a coffee break during the lectures, finding myself 5, I turned to a mathematics professor standing nearby. I asked him what his favorite teaching 6 was. “A cup of coffee,” he said, “I talk too much and too fast in the classroom. Students sometimes have trouble 7 me. So when I've said8 that I want my students to think about, I would9 and take a sip of coffee. It lets what I've just said sink in.”
When we were called to the next talk, he put down his cup and I 10 there was not a trace of coffee in it. “My doctor 11 me to stop drinking coffee,” he explained. “So I have always used a(n)12 cup.” I decided to try his 13 in my class.
I took a cup of coffee with me to my next class. It helped. My pauses, as I 14 the coffee, not only gave my students 15 to think about what I had said, but gave me time to think about what I was going to say next. I began to use my 16 to look around the room to see how my students were reacting to what I had just said. When I saw their 17 wander, I tried to bring them back. When I saw them puzzled over some concept that I thought I had 18, I gave another example. My 19 became less organized and less brilliant, but my students seemed to 20 me better.
