Can feelings of nostalgia(怀旧)be good for you? Or is it unhealthy to have a strong love for the past?

For years, medical experts have studied nostalgia and the reasons for it. Many experts warn that too much nostalgia is harmful. They say lingering(徘徊)in the past shows that a person is unhappy with his present life. There feelings keep the person from living his life to its fullest.

Dr. Louise Kaplan has written several books about nostalgia. She says these feelings often begin when a young person is between 13 and 19 years old.

“This is the time when you must face the loss of your childhood,” Kaplan says. “You see your new life is easily destroyed. But you think romantically about a golden past. You remember your childhood as a time when life was perfect.”

These feelings continue as a person gets older, Kaplan adds. She says many grown persons have a hard time keeping up with changes in the modern world, so they thing back to their younger years. At that time the world seemed simple and more harmless.

Kaplan says these feelings are not always actually existing. The good old days weren’t always good. However, she says nostalgia can be helpful, if used properly.

“Feelings of nostalgia can cause you to remember a time when you had high hopes and dreams.” Kaplan says. “It might give you the strong wish to catch those dreams today, in your present life.” She adds that nostalgia can prevent you from “cutting yourself off from your aim”, “At its best,” Kaplan says, “nostalgia has the ideas for the future.”

When you think of the tremendous technological progress we have made, it’s amazing how little we have developed in other respects. We may speak scornfully of the poor old Romans because they enjoyed the seemingly excited killing that went on in their arenas(竞技场). We may despise them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority(优越)really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don’t the audience who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remain as bloodthirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungry lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of arguments to defend sports which should have been banned long ago.
It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men punch each other in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is merely hypocrisy(虚伪). People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Audience are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they haven’t experienced the exquisite pleasure of witnessing continuous violence.
Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally—though with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen imprisoned in cages, or public punishment of any of the countless other barbarous (野蛮的) practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the harsh forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is unworthy of human beings.

When I recall my experiences of feeling heard and deeply understood by someone, I know how much the experiences helped me to cope with whatever I was dealing with at the time. Caring people who I have turned to in difficult times helped me the most by listening and asking about my feelings.
During one of my volunteer jobs at a  local HIV and cancer clinic, I found the helpfulness of empathic(感情移入的) listening. As a volunteer I was providing emotional support for people with health related problems. Empathic listening really made a difference on how patients felt about their health problems. By sharing about their pain and suffering and may willingness to listen, they felt less alone.
We can make life easier for each other by becoming a better listener and encouraging each other to share our feelings. We can become a better listener by avoiding giving advice and trying to solve problems unless we are asked to do so. Pressuring others to solve their life problems--"our ways"--is not helpful. Most people intuitively(凭直觉地) know how to solve their own problems. As a listener it's important to be patient and not to interrupt the speaker. Let them know it's OK to talk about their feelings and support them in feeling their feelings.
When one neither shares nor reaches out for support, he or she can remain a lonely mystery. Life can feel lonely when one keeps everything inside. Feeling alone with life problems can be worse than the problem itself. When we let a caring person listen to our life struggle, we will no longer feel alone with our struggle. Don't be afraid to ask your loved ones to take time to hear you out. Sometimes you have to ask for it. People cannot read your mind. Confiding in others can have a positive effect on our mood.

Children, especially boys, tend to idealise their fathers when they are young.Every little boy wants to grow up to be just like his father, and every little girl thinks her father is the smartest man on the earth. It’s not very easy to be a good father, but it’s not that difficult either. Children will truly enjoy spending time with their fathers, not just when they are kids, but even when they are adults.
Not all children communicate well with their fathers. Communication is often left to mothers, while fathers dispense advice as and when necessary. Don’t expect all conversations to centre around the dinner table. Go to your children’s bedrooms and talk to them about school, their teachers or their friends. Remember that the conversation cannot be one-sided. When your children open up to you, you also need to open up to them.
If your children come home from school feeling upset, go up to them and ask them what is the matter. And if it is something which seems to you to be a silly reason to be upset, don’t voice your opinion. It may be silly to you, but to your children it is important enough. So don’t wave the topic away by telling them not to bother about such stupid things. Simply discussing their problems with them will help them feel better.
Don’t shy away from having discussions about your teenage children’s love lives. Generally speaking, your children are definitely not going to discuss intimate details with you. Try to let them know that you are relaxed about topics on love. Tell your children how you met your wife. It is perfectly normal for children to go through feelings for the opposite sex as they grow up, and by keeping the topic closed for discussion, you are only shutting them off from discussing their feelings with you. All they will do is turn to their friends.

Do you ever find yourself getting really angry for almost no reason? Or suddenly feeling down
without knowing why? Going from sadness to anger to joy in a matter of minutes can make many
teens feel as though they're losing their control. But why is the feeling of being on an emotional roller
coaster (急转突变) so common among teens?
Dealing with constant change and pressure is part of the answer. Maybe you're starting a new
school and not able to see old friends as much. Getting good grades or wanting to be better in sports
or other activities can be a concern for many teens. It might feel as though there just isn't enough time
to do everything.
Being a teen means struggling with identity and selfimage. Being accepted by friends feels
extremely important. Teens also may notice, for the first time, a sense of distance from parents and
family. You may feel you want to be on your own and make your own decisions, but it can also
seem overwhelming (压倒的) and even a bit lonely at times. As fun and exciting as this time is, it also
can be a time of confusion and conflict.
Another important cause for mood swings is biology. When puberty (青春期) begins, the body
starts producing sex hormones. These hormones cause physical changes in the body. But in some
people, they also seem to cause emotional changes-the ups and downs that sometimes feel out of
control.
Feeling irritable or shorttempered can be signs of depression.  So can feelings of boredom or
hopelessness. Many people think of depression as feeling sad, but depression can also bring feelings
of moodiness, impatience, anger. When depression gets in the way of enjoying life or dealing with
others, that's a sign you need to do something about it, like talking to a counselor or therapist (治疗
专家) who can help you deal with it.
Here are some things you can do that might make those bad moods a bit easier to handle: recognize
you're not alone, catch your breath, count to 10, talk to people you trust, exercise, cry or wait.
