One year ago, I was in great trouble. I worked hard at English and devoted all my spare time to practising English. But I failed to pass the mid-term examination. I felt very disappointed.

So I asked my grandpa for advice when I went home. Hearing what I told him, he said examination resulted more or less on a fortuitous phenomenon. We can¡¯t judge our improvement only by one examination. He encouraged me to stick to working hard for a long time to check my results.

I took my grandpa¡¯s advice and have been doing it as he told me to since then. Now my English is much better than before. From my experience, I feel that we need advice from older generation.

Empathy

Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. ¡¾1¡¿ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed,a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation.Turn on the TV,and you¡¯re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. ¡¾2¡¿

There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. ¡¾3¡¿ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact,Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. ¡¾4¡¿ ¡°Academics are important. But if you don¡¯t have emotional£¨Çé¸ÐµÄ£©intelligence, you won¡¯t be as successful in work or in your love life,¡±she says.

What¡¯s the best way to up your EQ(ÇéÉÌ)?For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. ¡¾5¡¿

To really develop empathy, you¡¯d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, ave a ¡°sharing circle¡± with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

A. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

B. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

C.¡°One doesn¡¯t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,¡±Freed says.

D.Humans learn by example¡ªand most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

E.Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand somone else¡ªboth what they think and how they feel.

F.Good social skills¡ªincluding empathy¡ªare a kind of ¡°emotional intelligence¡± that will help you succeed in many areas of life.

G.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human¡ªand having empathy is decisive to those relationships.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Too many people want others to be their friends£¬but they don¡¯t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don¡¯t last long.To have a friend£¬you must learn to be one.You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you.Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules£ºbe honest£»be generous£»be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts.Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth£¬people usually will find out.If a friend finds out that you haven¡¯t been honest£¬you may lose the friend¡¯s trust.Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes.Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you.By sharing them£¬you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and helping with a problem.Something may go wrong at school.Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.Turning to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend¡¯s place so you can understand the problem better.

No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends£¬you must practice honesty£¬generosity and understanding.
