(17)Although/Though/Whilemy house was merely two blocks away,it was not a pleasant walk with one small boy asleep in the pram (手推婴儿车),the other one in a raincoat and no umbrella for myself.A pick-up truck passed us on the road.I tried to thumb a ride but failed.My little boy woke up with a start and began to cry.I(18)was convinced  (convince) that thins might become worse and nobody would bother to help on such a terrible day.
A few minutes later,(19)another truck drove by,but to my surprise,I saw it (20)pulling (pull) back and the driver looking directly at us.
A young man put the window down."Hey,here's an umbrella for you,please take (21)it."He called out.
I stood there (22)astonished (astonish),barely believing that the man(23)whose existence was unknown to me only moments ago,could be so (24)considerate (consider)."Come on,give this to your mummy,"he said to my older son.I accepted the offer and expressed my gratitude to him.
This man might have needed the umbrella for himself later during the day but preferred to give it to me.It was a lesson to me (25)that it's possible to give without expecting anything in return.
11.The"Earth Hour"initiative(自发行动) started in Australia's biggest city Sydney last year when an estimated 2.2million people flicked the switch---leaving the Sydney Opera House bathed in moonlight and the Harbor Bridge blacked out.
Organizer Andy Ridley said Sydney's 60minutes of darkness generated huge interest around the world and 23other cities from the Asia Pacific,North America,Europe and the Middle East had now signed up to be part of the 2008event.
The eight latest cities to join"Earth Hour"are Atlanta,San Francisco and Phoenix in the US; Thailand's capital Bangkok; Ottawa,Vancouver and Montreal in Canada and Dublin in Ireland.They joined Australian cities Sydney,Perth,Melbourne,Canberra,Brisbane,Adelaide; Denmark's Copenhagen,Aarhus,Aalborg and Odense; the Philippine capital Manila,Fiji's biggest city Suva.Christchurch in New Zealand; Chicago; Tel Aviv and Torono.

"I think it already has become much bigger,"he said."he idea was that anyone could do it,whether they were in a small village in France or a city like Sydney."
Ridley said the Sydney event,in which residents were asked to switch off lights and appliances for one hour, had raised awareness about the problem of global warming while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by conserving energy.
"I know that on the night we thought we might be able to cut energy use in the city by five percent but it ended up being 10.1percent,"he said.
He said he hoped Earth Hour provided a"very bg visual message"to politicians that climate change must be addressed quickly.

8.Many people think of the brain as a mystery.They don't know much about intelligence and how it works.When they do think about what intelligence is,many people believe that a person is born smart,average,or dumb---and stays that way in the whole life.But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle---it changes and gets stronger when you use it.And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.
Everyone knows that when you lift weights,your muscles get bigger and you get stronger.A person who can't lift 20pounds when he/she starts exercising can get strong enough to lift 100pounds after working out for a long time.That's because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise.And when you stop exercising,the muscles shrink and you get weaker.That's why people say"Use it or lose it!"
But most people don't know that when they practice and learn new things,parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise.Inside the cortex(皮层) of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells,called neurons.The nerve cells have branches connecting them to other cells in a complicated network.Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems.When you learn new things,these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger.The more you challenge your mind to learn,the more your brain cells grow.Then,things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do----like speaking a foreign language----seem to become easy after learning them for a period of time.The result is a stronger,smarter brain.
Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals'brains.They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more"perspicacious"-----they were better at solving problems and learning new things.
