20.John Boyne is best known for his hugely successful novel,The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.Now he has taken on the First World War,a similarly important historical event.Boyne's novel,Stay Where You Are and Then Leave is the story of Alfie Summerfield,a boy whose father is swept up in the excitement of the outbreak of the war and joins the army.Alfie's dad writes to his wife and son from the benches(战壕),but after a couple of years the letters stop coming.
According to Alfie's mum,that's because dad is"on a secret mission for the government".Alfie,however,suspects she might be lying and sets out to uncover the truth.At first he doesn't get far in discovering the mystery.Times are hard:his mum works as a nurse but can't make ends meet,so Alfie starts missing school to help out,earning money as a shoeshine boy at King's Cross Station in London.Then he has an amazing stroke of luck:one of his customers is an army doctor whose papers are blown away by the wind.Alfie helps to gather them,and in the process,discovers the true whereabouts of his father.
I'd been enjoying the story up to this point.Alfie is an easy character to like,and the relationship with his troubled mum is well-written.The other people in Alfie's wodd-his loving dad,his slighfly crazy granny have depth,too.However,from that moment at King's Cross,there's an increasingly fairytale-like feel to things,even though the story of Alfie's search to find his shell-shocked dad and bring him home is grounded in detail.There are more coincidences and the ending is fairytale,too.
There are other problems too.Early on,we are told that Alfie had often heard Prime Minister Asquith's name on the radio,which would have been difficult in 1914as the BBC only started broadcasting in 1922.And yet my final judgment on this book is positive.Stay Where You Are and Then Leave has its faults,but all in all it is a good,solid,engaging read.

4.Rome,Paris and New York are the world's top fashion cities, all of which have produced some of the top
trends, from fashionable skirts to the hottest new shoes. But have you ever wondered about the negative
ideas that they have enforced?
In April 2016,the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in Britain banned an ad from Gucci that
featured models dancing around and having fun, because they were all extremely skinny.Banning ads due
to the models'extreme figures isn't new.The ASA banned an ad in 2015 for the same reason. In France,it
has been ruled that models are to provide a doctor's note proving that they are at a healthy weight.
So what is the healthy weight for models?Twenty years ago,the average fashion model weighed 8%
less than the average woman.Today, they weigh 23% less.
People may think that being at an unhealthy weight will help them gain the benefits that the models
do.This provides a standard for beauty, and therefore people who want to achieve those things may
attempt to obtain them through unhealthy ways.People may think they are overweight, due to the images
of models'thin figures. They see something wrong with their bodies, whether they are overweight or not. This is a key factor in a lowered body image, low self-esteem,depression and possibly even eating
disorders.
I'm not blaming the fashion industry by any means. It's not their fault that many people look up to
the models and expect to live a life like theirs.I am glad that ASA is raising its voices when discussing the
growing issue of body images in the fashion industry.By banning the photos and videos, speaking out
against them and pushing for doctors'notes from the models,it's pushing for the idea that the traditional
fashion industry's body image demands should be changed and something more needs to be questioned.

6.It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams,the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life,but manners on the road are becoming terrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel.It is all right to have a tiger in a cage,but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners,but a good sense.It takes the most cool-headed (头脑冷静的) drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when they are forced to face rude driving.On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting.A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions.But such behavior of politeness is by no means enough.Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However,misplaced(用错了地方的) politeness can also be dangerous.A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time.The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in a traffic stream without causing total blockages( 拥堵) that give rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately,modern drivers can't even learn to drive,let alone(更不用说) master the roadman ship ( 公路驾车技能).Years ago,experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give and take( 互谅互让) from all road users.It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

21.The passage mainly talks aboutC.

23.According to the writer,a good driver shouldC.
A.encourage children to cross the road whenever they want to

C.be able to recognize road politeness when he sees it
D.join in a traffic stream quickly however other people feel
24.It is not right for drivers toD.
A.master the roadmanship
B.join in a traffic stream
C.give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness
D.encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to.
