When children celebrate a wedding anniversary for the parents, it's not just a celebration for the
parents but for the whole family. There are many types of wedding anniversary gifts.      1    Choosing a
gift for parents that involves the whole family makes the event more special for them.
Budget(预算)
Children shouldn't spend too much money on the gift. Parents usually know the financial conditions of
their children.     2
     Considerations
An anniversary gift for parents should have two characteristics: customized (订制的), and something
they can use together. It is not a good idea to choose a gift that only looks good. The gift is celebrating
their time spent together, so it has to be something they both will enjoy.
     Family celebration
One of the biggest achievements of parents is raising children. So some children decide to buy an
anniversary gift that involves the entire family such as a special family vacation.      3
     A party as a gift
4      If it is a milestone anniversary such as a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary, some children
choose to hold a party. The guest list includes all family members who have been close to them over the
years.
     Family-themed gifts
One choice is a family photo taken by a professional or even a painting created by a professional
artist using a family photo as the image to be painted.      5   If the parents don't have a DVD player,
the player can be included as part of the gift.
A. Sometimes gifts don't have to be objects bought with money.
B. Brothers and sisters can share the cost of the party.
C. And these gifts reflect a lot of thought and effort.
D. So the gift should be one selected specially for parents.
E. Overspending can make parents uncomfortable and worried.
F. This way, the family can be together to celebrate the anniversary.
G. Another nice gift is making a DVD with old videotapes of family events.

                                                                         Gift Giving
1.______
There are many occasions (场合) for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays, naming
ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations
in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one's first day of school or graduation from university,
often require gift giving.
2.______
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me
a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds
up or confirms a social obligation (义务).
3.______
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say
that a gift lets the recipient (接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person "feel
special." We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say
"I'm sorry." Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things
that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages-often very
expressive ones.
4.______
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago
described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years:"I
appreciate these, and they mean something to me," the woman said, "because I remember the occasions they
were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we've had." The gifts remain and keep
the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that
the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
5.______
Emotions (情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the
anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful.
Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many
are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

1  She described all the things she had to do-one was to make her bed-from the moment she
woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed
for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I'd been raised by wolves in a forest. 2
Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in
42 years-and nothing bad had happened. "And you know what?"she said. "I don't dry my dishes
anymore, either."
3 One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other
was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle (原理)
about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs. The
problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care
of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. 4
So what is the solution? There's an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first.
On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise,
leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. 5 The choice is yours: whatever
makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano.
Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother
kept hers. Fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.
A. This woman had made two major breakthroughs (突破).
B. Above all, you needn't do anything for yourself regularly.
C. They put everyone else's needs ahead of their own.
D. However, she went along with my idea.
E.  Most people do not take time to relax themselves.
F. The point is to do something for yourself every day.
G. A patient came to see me about the stress in her life.

Here are some ways to help you have a happier and more successful life:
1  Instead of saying, "Why is this happening to me?" you say, "What can I learn from this?" Trust that
anything difficult in life is temporary. Then life will get better.  2  Without life's challenges, we would never
know what we are truly made of. Therfore, we become stronger and more confident in the process.
3  It actually works! Don't say it doesn't work until you've tried it. We all have a blueprint for our lives
and making plans will help us realize it.
Take care of people around you honestly.   4   If you truly care about your friends, family or someone
else, they'll stick with you through high and low because they know you care about them.
Refuse to compare your progress with others. It will only serve to destroy your confidence. Everyone
is at different stages in their lives. If you understand that you're right where you're supposed to be, then it
won't matter what others are doing. You are unique with special qualities, talents, skills and so on.  5
A. Pay attention to your imagination.
B. The power of making plans cannot be ignored.
C. Try to learn from the difficult situations you meet.
D. Everything you've experienced has been in preparation.
E. There is no one like you, so how can you compare yourself to others?
F. It is through the toughest times we learn what we're capable of doing.
G. People can see right through you and can feel whether you're honest or not.

Most of us lead a busy life.   1  We think, "If I reached my goal, then I would be happy", or "If I
could get a better job, then I would enjoy life." But why not enjoy life right now?
Firstly, take time to notice and appreciate the beauty in your own surroundings.   2  "There is a great
big world of wonder and beauty around us!" And as Brodersen explains, "Look for the beauty of the
sunrise and of a friend's smile that brightens your day. Open your eyes to see the beauty you might not
normally see. Doing so helps to cheer you up."
Secondly, taking time to experience some simple pleasures also can bring joy to your heart and ease
your stress. Take me for example.   3  One universal simple pleasure is finding things that make you laugh. Make time to laugh every day.
Thirdly, don't take your family and friends for granted. Rich, rewarding relationships add greatly to the
enjoyment of life. When you think of someone, why not call, e-mail or write them?   4  As Wayne Lawton explains, "Invest time in relationships. Remove the attitude, what's in it for me? Happiness is found in
putting other's interests, desires and concerns ahead of our own whenever possible. Selfishness is a
dead-end street."   5
A. I delight in simple things like my favorite tea drink, a bubble bath or family photos.
B. In my spare time, I enjoy collecting stamps and reading novels.
C. Driven by the "urgent", we forget to enjoy life.
D. So please treasure relationship.
E. You don't need to travel far to find beauty.
F. Be aware of beauty in nature.
G. A short e-mail or phone call can make a world of difference to someone.
