Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing to apply to study in your university.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours ,

Li Hua

Dear Sir or Madam,

¡¡¡¡I¡¯m writing to apply to study in your university. I read about the admission information while surfing the net the other day. I¡¯m really interested in it.

¡¡¡¡For one thing, I¡¯m an outgoing girl and I can get on well with all my classmates. For another, I do well in most of my subjects, especially in English. I like reading English poems and enjoy English movies. Speeches delivered by famous people like Martin Luther. King, President Bush and so on, are also my favorite. What¡¯s more, I once won the first prize in an English speech contest held in our city and was honored the Best Speaker for my excellent performances.

¡¡¡¡As we all know, English is a universal language and I like to communicate with different people, so I intend to major in English if I am admitted into your university. I want to have a job related to languages in the future and I believe I can help promote cultural communication between China and the world.

¡¡¡¡I¡¯m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡                                ¡¡               Yours,

                                                             Li Hua

Scientists in UK have grown a living human "brain". The team at Aston University created tiny bunch of cells which act like a mini nervous system.

They believe it could help find a cure for worse mental conditions like Parkinson¡¯s disease. Professor Michael Coleman is leading the research program. He explained, "We are aiming to be able to study the human brain at the most basic level, using an actual living human cell system. Cells have to be alive and operating efficiently to enable us to really understand how the brain works. "The experiment involves changing cells from a cancer tumour (Ö×Áö£©and making them behave like brain cells.

Although far from finished, researchers hope the false brain cells will give them a greater understanding of how real brains work. This, in turn, could significantly further research into conditions which affect the brain. Neil Hunt, chief leader of the research group, said, "It is still very early days, but in the future the research could lead to a useful tool for looking into dementia (³Õ´ô)."

The technique could also provide a way to carry on animal test and is being supported by the Humane Research Trust (HRT). The scientists predict that over the next ten years a million people will develop dementia. Professor Coleman believes their findings could change this. He said£¬"We hope our research will provide scientists with a new and highly relational human experimental model to help them understand the brain better and develop new drugs to control the related disease. However, the biggest challenge at present is that we are greatly short of fund, which will slow our research."

1.UK scientists grow a living human "brain" in order to ______.

C. discover how human brain really works D. separate cells from a cancer tumour

2. According to Neil Hunt, research into brain cells ______.

A. will get finished as early as possibleB. will make people discover dementia

C. will affect the brain growth in many ways

D. will help to treat some diseases in nerve system

3. From the last paragraph£¬we can know that ______

A. the technique provided by HRT is immature

B. animal tests are no longer allowed by law

C. a million people suffer from brain diseases

D. the research program lacks financial support

4. The text is intended to ______.

A. tell us about a breakthrough in medical research

B. introduce a research program in human's brain

C. introduce the progress of drugs for dementia

D. tell us about health problem in nerve system

In the early hours of March 8, a Boeing 777 took off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Its destination was Beijing. But for unknown reasons, it never arrived there.

There were 239 people on the Malaysia Airlines flight, including 154 Chinese. As of March 13, 12 different countries, including Malaysia, China, Vietnam and the US, were searching for the plane.

The disappearance is an ¡°aviation (º½¿Õ) mystery¡±, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia¡¯s Civil Aviation Authority, said on March 10.There was no clear sign of a crash by March 13.

Between 1-2 hours after takeoff, the plane suddenly lost contact with people on the ground. The weather was clear, and the pilots didn¡¯t make any calls . No evidence was found in the area where the flight last made contact. People are also talking about a possible hijacking (½Ù»ú).

International police agency Interpol confirmed on March 9 that at least two passengers on the flight had used stolen passports to get on board. ¡°We are looking at all possibilities,¡± said Malaysian Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein. The incident is now being called simply a ¡°plane disappearance¡±.

So, what are some possible causes of a plane disappearance? An AP story provided a summary.

1. A failure of the plane¡¯s body or its engines. However, even if both engines stopped working, the plane could still glide (»¬Ïè) for up to 20 minutes, giving pilots time to make an emergency call.

2. Bad weather. Planes are designed to fly through most severe storms. However, in June 2009, an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed during a bad storm over the Atlantic Ocean.

3. A bomb. Throughout history, several planes have been brought down by bombs.

4. An accidental shoot-down by some country¡¯s military. In July 1988, the US Navy accidentally shot down an Iran Air flight. In September 1983, a Korean Air Lines flight was shot down by a Russian fighter jet.

No matter how unlikely a situation, it¡¯s too early to determine what really happened to MH370. It could take months, if not years, to rule out any possibilities, say experts..

1. How many cities are mentioned in this passage?

A. Four cities.B. five cities.C. Six cities.D. Seven cities.

2. What could the underlined phrase ¡°rule out¡± in the last paragraph mean?

A. cross outB. get rid ofC. take outD. take the place of

3. What could be the best title of the passage?

A. An Air CrashB. The Causes of the Disappearance

C. The Disappearance of MH 370D. An Aviation Mystery
