13.A new eight-kilometre road is under construction that links the port area with the motorway system.It is expected to carry 20,000trucks and cars a day,which greatly reduces the overcrowded traffic in the center of the city.As part of the project,two four-kilometre road tunnels are being built below the central area of the city,one for traffic to the north and the other for traffic to the south.The two tunnels are about 20metres below the surface and are 12metres wide,providing for two lanes of traffic in each direction.
In the upper part of the tunnel two air-conditioning pipes remove the waste gas of trucks and cars and keep the quality of air inside the tunnel.The lighting is at the top of the tunnel,practically at its highest point.There will also be electronic signs at frequent intervals (间隔).They show traffic conditions ahead,and can be seen clearly by drivers.The wall is made up of four main elements,which include a waterproofing covering and,on the inside of the tunnel,a concrete lining (混凝土衬砌).
Each tunnel is roughly round and the lower part of the tunnel is somewhat flat.The surface of the road lies on the base,which is made of concrete and steel.The drainage system (排水系统),just below the road surface on one side,removes any extra liquid,particularly water.In the event of fire,the fire main,which is made of steel,pipes water to many fire hydrant stations at regular intervals along the length of the tunnel.The fire main is at the side of the tunnel,and at the level of the road surface.Other systems in the tunnel will include emergency phones.
28.Each of the tunnels under construction isD.

3.On Thanksgiving,Scott Macaulay is preparing a full turkey dinner for a whole bunch of people he's never met.His 70 or so guests-elderly people,low-income people,at-risk teens,and others-have one detail I in common:(16)C.
"What I do isn't a big deal,really,"the 52-year-old said."I just cook some food."
Macaulay's unconventional Thanksgiving tradition began in 1985,right around the time his parents decided to get divorced.The holidays got messy that year,and Macaulay,who was 24 at the time.sensed he'd be spending Thanksgiving alone.(17)A.
"Thanksgiving isn't about fireworks or band concerts,"he said."(18)BIt's not fun to do that by yourself."
Macaulay placed an ad in his local paper with a simple message:If people thought they might be alone on Thanksgiving, they could give Macaulay a call.
(19)DIt was nice.So he placed another ad the following year,and the year after that.
In recent years,Macaulay has been hosting his Thanksgiving dinners at local churches with lots of space.He still buys and prepares all the food himself and spends about 40hours putting the whole affair together.(20)EHe said it's important to him that he not seek out volunteers or donations because"that's not what this is about."
Macaulay said he'd love to see other people hold similar dinners all over the country.
"I think someone in every town should do this,"he said,"so nobody has to be alone."

A.It was a terrible feeling.
B.It's a celebration around a table with food.
C.Without Macaulay,they'd be alone on Thanksgiving.
D.A few people showed up at Macaulay's place that first year.
E.On Thanksgiving Day,he runs around nonstop from about 5a.m.to 8p.m.
F.I don't like the thought of cooking a thanksgiving meal for only one person.
G.He likes it that most of the people he feeds each Thanksgiving don't know his name.
1.When international aid is given,steps must be taken to ensure (确保)that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended.The way to achieve this may not be simple.It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation.The United Nations Organization (UNO) could undertake to direct the distribution of aid.Here however rises the problem of costs.Also tied with this is time.Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.
More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster; it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times.A common proverb says,"Give me a fish and I eat for day,teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime."If we follow this wise saying,it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves.For example,a country could share its technology with another.This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites.Even small country is able to help less developed nations.Sometimes what is take for granted,like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school,could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems.It does not cost much to share such simple things.Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site.They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back form time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves.Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands.
Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills.It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses.Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned,there is also the build-up of friendships to consider.Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies.However,in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.
32.According to the author,how could international aid reach the victims in time?C
A. By solving the cost problems
B. By solving the transportation problems
C. By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.
D. By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.
33.What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?C
A.Providing food is vital
B.Learning to fish is helpful
C.Teaching skills is essential

34.Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands?D

B.An exchange program.
C.A water plant.
D.Financial support.
35.What can we infer about international aid from the passage?A
A.It is facing difficulties
B.It is unnecessary during normal times
C.It should be given in the form of materials
D.It has gained support developed countries.

(40)APlaying sports can reduce stress and help you feel a little happier.How?The brain chemicals released during exercise improve a person's mood.Friends are another mood-lifter.And being in a team creates tight bonds between friends.It's good to know your teammates will support you---both on and off the field!

3.When was the last time someone unexpectedly did something nice for you?Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It's happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago,I was dining in a restaurant with a friend who kept talking about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't my friend's talks that made me suffer.I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship.I could have burst into tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said,"Your meal was already paid for."My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man I saw out of the corner of my eye.He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar,had a beer, and stayed for maybe ten minutes. The waitress said,"Yes,the gentleman in white paid for you."It felt like an angel was saying,"I see you, honey. It's going to be okay."
Just last year,I was running a halfmarathon. With just 1 mile to go,I was out of gas.Runners call it"hitting the wall".I thought I couldn't move another inch.Out of nowhere,a strang er came up to me and said,"What's your name, sweetie?Jennifer?Okay,Jennifer, let's go!Come on!It's just around the corner! You can do it!"And he ran with me until I picked up my pace.I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day.
