题目内容

When I walk through the streets of San Francisco’s business districts, white people stare at me as if I were a circus clown.

Their staring eyes don’t see that I get ____1____ A’s in school, or that I am a captain of the football team, or that I belong to ___2____youth organizations. All they see is that I am 6-foot-4, young ,black, and male-----a potential ____3____to them.

White men look at me as if I am up to no good, or as if they are ____4____to me. White women just look at me with____5____, say, sometimes they cross the street when they see my friends and me coming, or walk in the street and only get back on the sidewalk after we ____6____.

Many people come to San Francisco to get away from the stereotypes(成见) of the cities they were born and ____7_____ in. The majority of the blacks and Latinos who live in this city don’t have that luxury.

How can you feel at home when people are_____8_____telling you to get back to Africa or Mexico ----or just back to “where you belong”?

My way of dealing with this kind of thing has _____9_____over the years. In the past, when my friends and I would walk the streets and a hundred pairs of white eyes would look at me as if we were the lowest form of dirt, it would make us angry enough to hurt or ____10____them.

Now I’m more likely to use ____11____ to defend myself against those eyes. To women who clutch their purse in terror, I’ll say, “Man, I ain’t gonna do anything to you, I got money in my pocket!” My cousin has even started wearing a T-shirt ____12_____ in big letters, “NO, WHITE LADY, I DON'T’ WANT YOUR PURSE.”

The most painful thing is when we get those___13____ stares from black people, especially elderly ones. I want o say to them, “We’re black too. Why would we do something to you?”

Usually I react more ____14____to all of this than a lot of my friends do. Some of them, so brainwashed, just think it’s part of life and that there is nothing you can do.

But for me, that’s not good enough. I just can’t stand it when every day a hundred pair of eyes tell you you’re not_____15_____.

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming.Last week I received a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero.

That got me thinking about what a hero is.Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone's life?

Today I decided to look up the word "hero" in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read "a person who does.something brave".As I read on, it also said "a person who is good and noble ".

That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very important.Say I was walking into the local Wal-Mart Store and I happened to open, and hold the door for someone as a courtesy. As they passed me by, I say, "How are you today?" Most of the time that would be no big deal, but this time let's say it was for someone who was deeply depressed and near the end of the rope. That may have very well been the only kindness or courtesy shown to them in a very long time.

Having been near "the end of my rope", after my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition.I was within hours trying to get enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home, someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero.

Gee, who would have ever thought that anyone can become a hero, and possibly save a life just by being kind and courteous to others? The best part of all is that becoming a hero is free to all who wish to wear such an honor.

Online grocery shopping was counted as the next great innovation to make our lives easier. In China more than 3,000 websites offer the service, but none have turned a profit.

Xiang Nian has had a hard day at the office but at least she can skip the trip to the grocery store. A text message on her phone lets her know the order she placed earlier in the day has been delivered to a locker outside her apartment.

"It’s really convenient for an office worker like me. My fresh products are waiting for me when I get home and can start cooking. No need to go to the supermarket any more," Xiang says.

One of the largest online supermarkets in Wuhan is Just-easy Fresh Produce. Over the past 3 years, the company has developed its online retail grocery business by guaranteeing fresh produce and an innovative delivery system. They've installed thousands of lockers in communitieshttp:// / around downtown Wuhan.

"We get an average of 8,000 orders per day. That's the most in China, I'm proud of it. We have placed over 20 thousand lockers in more than half of the communities in Wuhan and we plan to expand to all of them. Many e-commerce giants, like Taobao, are talking about cooperation with us," Jie Xiaofeng, manager of Wuhan Just-easy Agricultural Science & Technology Co., says.

While Just-easy may have thousands of customers, a staff of almost 300 and 40 delivery trucks, it's still operating in the red.

"There are over 3,000 companies selling fresh products online in China. But none is making a profit. It will take them at least 3 years before they make a profit. The major challenge is the cost of delivery. But they do have many advantages. The price of their goods is lower than the supermarkets," professor He Dehua at Huazhong Agricultural University, says.

A number of China's e-commerce giants are making moves into online grocery sales, with Taobao opening an online platform it calls "Cainiao". And traditional retailers(零售店) including Wal-Mart and Carrefour are also looking to start selling their produce online.

Many big B2C e-commerce players usually take fresh farm produce as the last category to add to their offerings. But now more and more large businesses have set their eyes on the industry. They want to prove the fresh food market is definitely suited to online sales.

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The online grocery shopping is making our life easier.

B. Just-easy Fresh Produce is a pioneer of the online retail grocery business.

C. Conventional retailers are facing challenges.

D. None of the online grocery supermarkets has made a profit.

2.The underlined part “it's still operating in the red” probably means _______.

A. the present situation of the company makes them angry

B. the company is not making a profit

C. the company is very popular with customers

D. the staff of the company are aggressive

3.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. The fresh food market is definitely suited to online sales.

B. Fresh farm produce is the last category that people will buy online.

C. Online grocery sales have drawn the attention of e-commerce giants.

D. Traditional retailers choose to sell their produce on Cainiao.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards online grocery shopping?

A. Pessimistic.                      B. Indifferent.                      C. Objective.               D. Supportive.

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week I received
a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her
son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero.
That got me thinking about what a hero really is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car?
If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone's life?
Today I decided to look up the word "hero" in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read "a person
who does something brave". As I read on, it also said "a person who is good and noble".
That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very

big deal, but this time let's say it was for someone who was deeply depressed and near the end of the rope.
That may have very well been the only kindness or courtesy shown to them in a very long time.
Having been near "the end of my rope", after my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition.
I was within hours trying to get up enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home,
someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That
wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero.
The many stories I-kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes
the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now
living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these institutions with a very hard and bitter attitude
against the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of
them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who cared. If it works, we
will also become "heroes".
Gee, who would have ever thought that anyone can become a hero, and, possibly save a life, just by being
kind and courteous to others? The best part of all is that becoming a hero is free to all who wish to wear such
an honor.

2. The underlined word "courtesy" in Paragraph 4 means the behaviour that is _____.
A. both polite and respectful
B. both brave and fearless
C. both thoughtful and considerate
D. both cute and kind
3. The underlined word "it" in the last sentence of Paragraph 5 refers to _____.
A. the wonderful card the writer received
B. the action of sending the card
C. the fact that the sender saved the writer
D. the fact that the sender was a true friend
4. According to this passage, which of the following can be considered as the behaviour of a hero?
A. Holding a door open for someone.
B. Sending someone a wonderful card.
C. Keeping writing many stories for children.
D. Being kind to someone who has a hard time.
