How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss,or an insensitive employee      your day?

One day I was in a taxi and we headed       the airport. We were driving in the     lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his      ,slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and     the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started       at us.

My taxi driver just      and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really      . So I asked,"Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of      , full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage       up,they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on     .Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Believe me. You’ll be      .Don’t take their garbage and      it to other people at work,at home,or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with      .The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s     in your life. Roy Baumeister,a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you      bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you      them more frequently.

So…Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you       it!

When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by      go of the bad. Have a Garbage-Free Day!Have a marvelous,garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today       the harvest you reap tomorrow.

As prices and building costs keep rising, the“do-it-yourself”(DIY)trend(趋势)in the U.S. continues to grow.

“We needed furniture(家具)for our living room,” says John Ross,“and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.

Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420.“I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.”

John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you

want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don’t have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.

What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s a very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist, there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard(仪表板).

Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates(调节) the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge(排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.

Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “Who’s in charge?” We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.

By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you’ll have to spend on your outside interests.

The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.

1.The underlined word “ally” in Para. 3 probably means somebody or something that is _____.

A.your slave and serves you

B.your supporter and helps you

C.under your control and obeys you

D.under your influence and follows you

2.The author intends to tell us that time _____.

A.could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch

B.could be managed by the internal clock of human bodies

C.should be well managed for our own good

D.should be saved for outside interests

3.In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you _____.

A.how to keep up with the time              B.how to make up for lost time

C.how to have a good time                  D.how to make good use of time

I know what you’re thinking: pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the morning if you want to.

I know lots of women who don’t have breakfast, and they have many different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saving” calories(卡路里), still others just don’t like breakfast food.

But eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all.

Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers found that those who don’t have breakfast have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,”I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.

1.The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means __________.

A.pizza topped with fruit                   B.things left undone

C.food remaining after a meal               D.meals made of vegetables

2.According to the last paragraph, it is important to__________.

A.be careful about what you eat              B.eat something for breakfast

C.heat up food before eating it               D.eat calorie-controlled food

3.What can we infer from the text?

A.Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.

B.Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.

C.There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.

D.Eating vegetables helps save energy.

4.The text is written mainly for those__________.

A.who go to work early                    B.who go to bed late

C.who eat before sleep                    D.who want to lose weight

5.What does the author advise the readers to do?

A.Better eat up all the food at dinner in the night.

B.Better eat less in the night.

C.Better eat leftovers in the morning.

D.Better get up late and eat nothing in the morning in order to burn more calories.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

A young man was slapped in the face until he bled because he didn’t offer his seat to a woman with a baby on a bus in downtown Hangzhou. Later he was proved to be a disabled person.

In a series of cases nationwide, we see people being beaten for refusing to give up their seats on public transport, which seems to be a moral problem about correct behavior and self-sacrifice.

People with moral deficiency (who don’t give up their seats to deserving people) can be condemned, but they don’t deserve to be treated with violence because they offend moral values and not laws. In comparison, the attackers behave worse.

The attackers regard relying on violence as their only choice if people ignore their appeals to give up their seats. It seems they start a shout or a fight for the sake of justice, but can they still think of their personal intention when they call violence justice?

This “violent justice” can confuse many people and encourage them to do the same, especially when we are overpowered by illogical mood.

If cruel and rude acts are rooted in children’s hearts, society will never step into civilization. The practice violates common values, neither solving problems nor safeguarding civilized society.
