As a child, I was truly afraid of the dark and of getting lost:these fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange 1 things looked and sounded in my familiar room at night that 2 me so much. There was never total 3 , but a streetlight or passing car lights 4 clothes hung over a chair take on the 5 of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my 6 , I saw the curtains seem to move when the was no 7 . A tiny sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the daylight. My 8 would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would 9 very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.

Another of my. childhood fears was that I would get lost, 10 on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home-that was no 11 After school, 12 , when all the buses were 13 up along the street, I was afraid that I'd get on the wrong one and be taken to some 14 neighborhood:On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn't 15 the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears 16 all I had as a child was that of not being liked or 17 by others. Being popular was so important to me 18 , and the fear of not being liked was a 19 one.

As if there weren’t enough of them in the world already, scientists have succeeded in cloning flies. The alike fruit flies are the first insects ever cloned, says the Canadian team that created them. The question everyone asks is why anyone would want to clone flies in the first place. She hopes that the insects , which are very easy to experiment with , will help to adjust the cloning process in other animals and even in humans, where the technique is being researched to aid production of therapeutic (治疗的) stem cells.
In cloning, the DNA-containing nucleus of an adult cell is injected into an egg whose own nucleus(细胞核) has been removed. At the moment, the majority of cloned mice, sheep and other animals die before birth. It is thought this is because the adult DNA is not properly ‘reprogrammed’.
Using flies, researchers might discover genes that are important for this reprogramming, and that have matches in other animals. That is because it is relatively easy in flies to knock out the function of a single gene and then attempt cloning with these cells, which will test whether that gene is important. If such genes are confirmed, then in theory cloned mammalian embryos(晶胚) might be grown in selected solutions that change the activity of those genes to improve the technique’s success rate. Although some groups have attempted to clone insects before, Lloyd says this is the first time it has been successful. The team used a slight difference on the standard cloning process: they transferred nuclei taken from embryos rather than fully-grown adult cells. They sucked several nuclei (pl)out of developing fly embryos, and injected them into a fertilized(已受精的) fly egg. From over 800 early attempts, they cloned five adult insects, the group reports in the journal Genetics.

Human cloning technology could be used to reserve heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden.

With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successful. Couples go through physical and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before.

We should be able to clone the bone marrow(骨髓) for children and adults suffering from leukemia(白血病). This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.

Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented (前所未有的)advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefit begin.

1.What does the underlined word “infertile” (paragraph 2) most probably mean?

A. with physical and emotional problems

B. short of time and money

C. unable to give birth to children

D. separated from each other for a long time

2.According to the text, one of the first expected benefits from cloning technology is in ______.

A. the treatment of mental diseases

B. the reserve of heart diseases

C. the cure of gene-related diseases

D. the bearing of babies

3.According to the writer, the main problem with the development of human cloning technology is that__________.

A. it has brought about benefits so far

B. it may be out of human control

C. people still know little about it

D. people are afraid of such technology
