Dear Editor,

I¡¯m a student, I¡¯ve been proud of Gucha, an old temple in my village. It¡¯s a cultural relic with a long history, which makes it so famous that many tourists visit it every year.

But now I feel worried about it. Though much money is brought in, part of it has been badly destroyed. Worse still, some people in my village want to pull it down and build a new factory where the old temple is. It represents the past of my village, so it should be protected well.

The number of the visitors should be limited to protect the old temple. Also, a website should be built where people can look at the pictures of the temple without destroying its beauty. As for the factory, it should be built in some other places. Do you think so?

I¡¯m looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

Americans use many expressions with the word ¡°dog¡±. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. ¡¾1¡¿ However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. ¡¾2¡¿ They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

¡¾3¡¿ This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

¡¾4¡¿ People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. ¡¾5¡¿ .

A. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

B. Still, people say every dog has its day.

C. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs.

D. Dogs are their best friends and they are loyal to people.

E. There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.

F. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.

G. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I¡¯d hitch a ride (´î±ã³µ).

I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn¡¯t give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured £¨Ê¹¡·ÅÐÄ£©me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.

Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I¡¯d been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.

After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, ¡°You haven¡¯t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.¡±

I couldn¡¯t remember where I¡¯d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

¡¾1¡¿The author had to hitch a ride one day in 1978 because .

A. her work delayed her trip to Sydney

B. she missed the only train back home

C. she was going home for her holidays

D. the town was far away from Sydney

¡¾2¡¿Which of the following did Gordon do according to Paragraph 2?

A. He helped the girl find a ride.

B. He gave the girl a ride back home.

C. He bought sandwiches for the girl.

D. He watched the girl for three hours.

¡¾3¡¿The reason why the author offered a lift to the elderly man was that .

A. she realized he was Gordon

B. she had known him for decades

C. she was going to the nearby town

D. she wanted to repay the favour she once got

¡¾4¡¿What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?

A. Those who give rides will be repaid.

B. Good manners bring about happiness.

C. Giving sometimes produces nice results.

D. People should offer free rides to others.
