【题目】 What makes Belgian (比利时的) chocolate so special? How has Belgian chocolate become so famous? What are the reasons why Belgian chocolate is so good? After reading the text, you will find the answers.

Congo (刚果) became their gateway to Africa’s cocoa plantations and resulted in Belgium bringing back cocoa beans to Europe from Africa around the 1880s. Therefore, Belgium could produce quality chocolate before anyone else in Europe and before most countries in the world. Even the Swiss, who are farmed for their chocolate, learnt much of what they know from the Belgians.

Belgians are naturally good at engineering---They developed processes; they created new methods. Firstly, Belgium was one of the first countries to come up with machines which could make the cocoa beans really thin so that the chocolate was extremely smooth.

Another example of this Belgian innovation was the process brought about by Jean Neuhaus in 1912. He developed a way to make a cold shell of chocolate for what he called “pralines (干果糖)”. These were different and for the first time the chocolate could be filled with a variety of flavored creams, such as coffee, fruit or even more chocolate. No one else at that time could make chocolate with such a complexity of flavor and this development changed the way people would eat chocolate forever.

Just as many Italian villages have a specialty olive oil supplier and many French villages have a local vineyard (酒庄), so is it true that every Belgian village has its own small chocolate shop. Recipes have been passed down through for families for generations. This culture extends to both the quality of ingredients used and the care that is taken when people make the chocolate. The most delicious Belgian chocolate is made not by large manufacturing companies, but in small family chocolate shops by hand and basic equipment.

1What makes Belgians produce quality chocolate first in Europe?

A.The perfect location.B.The improved process.

C.The advanced equipment.D.The earlier access to cocoa beans.

2What does the underlined word” innovation” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.devotion.B.creation.

C.strength.D.preference.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.Chocolate has been the typical product of Belgium.

B.Belgian chocolate has been also famous in Italy and France.

C.It is hard to buy Belgian chocolate made by small family shops.

D.Recipes of Belgian chocolate were introduced from other countries.

4What is the structure of the passage?

A.---②③④---B.--------

C.----③④--D.----③④⑤

【题目】 Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working? Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body, while others think it is important for strengthening newly-formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.

The neurons (神经元) in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites (树突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain's cells to each other at contact points called synapses (突触). The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.

In 2003, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through the "noise" and dispense all the unnecessary information, leaving behind only the most important memories-

Recently, the university's research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6,920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four — year period; one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.

It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged; these were most likely well-established memories. Therefore, although we may be sleeping to forget some of what we've learned, the brain "forgets" in a smart way.

Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity. Though scientists may never agree on a single reason, they are all sure of one thing — a good night's rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!

1What will happen when we learn new things?

A.We tend to forget some key information.

B.We develop the ability to recharge the body.

C.The dendrites expand and connect brain's cells.

D.The neurons gather at what are called contact points.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “dispense” in Paragraph 3?

A.Pick up.B.Get rid of.

C.Bring down.D.Pull out of.

3What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

A.To prove a new theory.

B.To report a new discovery.

C.To show sleep good for memory.

D.To discuss how long one should sleep.

【题目】 The beginning of baseball in China traces back further than most would think, in 1863. From that time, Chinese universities soon began to stage baseball activities. The first game, as documents recorded, was held in Shanghai in 1905. National interest in this traditionally American sport picked up quickly, and in 1915, China placed second in the Greater Asia baseball tournament held in Shanghai. Several decades later, baseball was as popular as it would ever be. In 1959,teams from 30 regions came together in a national competition.

Founded in 2002, the China Baseball League (CBL) is China’s professional league for the sport, with seven teams around the country. The opportunity to capture a huge new market with China’s growing interest saw the US Major League Baseball (MLB) open its first China office in Beijing in 2007, which has since then developed the Chinese market and educated young athletes. An example is the youth baseball program Play Ball in major Chinese cities. In the same year, the CBL partnered with Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), agreeing to allow Japanese clubs to send coaches and players to China and Chinese players to train at Japanese facilities. This program helps Chinese schools integrate baseball into their physical education curriculum, build professional development centers. More and more Chinese youths are getting involved with the sport, taking baseball class on the weekends or after school. Many programs for children have been established and often hold classes at many baseball fields.

Through these different partnerships and co-operations, China has created opportunities for the citizens to experience another culture. China might just be the future of baseball.
