If we agree that the function of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to concentrate on teaching children something really useful. Here is what our
schools should teach.
Politeness is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be
accomplished by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed by the struggle for money, but we don't make an effort
to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the
beginning.
We're likely to accept something we are told, but that's not what educated people do. Educated
people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach
critical ( 批判性的) thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food ( 垃圾
食品) ,they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and responsibilities. We ought to understand what they
are.   We have to know a little bit of our history and geography, because we need to have an environment
in which to relate to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can't. But that's not a reason to avoid teaching what is
important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children :"This is life, this
is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it."

Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike
human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away-straight up. A decade ago,
adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites,
physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which
ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than
rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have pest problems.
Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they
became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured
the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a colourcoded map showing where plants
were running "fevers". Farmers could then spotspray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they
otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted
the new technology and longterm backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about
pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation.
Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of
agricultural land in the United States, " says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade.  But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

1. Plants will send out an increased amount of heat when they are________.
A. facing an infrared scanner
B. sprayed with pesticides
C. in poor physical condition
D. exposed to excessive sun rays

2. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to________.
A. estimate the damage to the crops
B. draw a colourcoded map
C. measure the size of the affected area
D. locate the problem area

3. Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by________.
A. resorting to spotspraying
B. transforming poisoned rain
C. consulting infrared scanning experts
D. detecting crop problems at an early stage

To lift something from the floor correctly, first bend your knees and squat down. Keep your back
and hips(臀部) and waist (腰部) in a line. If you bend over, the muscles ( ~ I$1 ) in your lower back
can become hurt easily. If you keep your back and hips straight, the muscles are stronger, because they
have much more support. The other muscles can then help the lower back muscles.
As you squat down, try to get close to the object as possible. For example, if you are going to pick
up a heavy box, squat down directly in front of it.
Maybe you will have to spread your knees and legs. Put one knee on each side of the box. Remember at all times to keep your back straight.
Put your hands under the object that is in front of you, between your knees.
To lift the object, you should stand up slowly. Use your muscles in order to stand up. In other words,
lift with your legs, not with your back.
1. The underlined word "squat" means________.
A. to bend over your waist
B. to bend yourself by bending your legs
C. to lower yourself by bending your legs
D. to stand straight
2. You should keep your back straight so that________.
A. the muscles can' t be hurt
B. the muscles will have more support
C. you seem to be stranger
D. you will get more muscles
3. The correct way to lift something heavy from the floor is________.
A. to bend over from your waist first
B. to bend your knees and squat down first
C. to keep your back in a line
D. to put your hands under the object
4. What lifts the object in fact?
A. The muaelea of your arms.
B. The muscles of your back.
C. Your hands.

Today we tell you about some new understanding of why cutting the main branch of a plant or tree
can lead to better development.
The findings are from researchers on two_continents.Professor Prezemyslaw Prusinkiewicz of the
University of Calgary in Canada led the research with scientists from Britain and Sweden.Their study
appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Researchers have known since the 1930s that the actively growing tip of a plant produces a hormone(荷尔蒙) called auxin(生长素). This hormone flows down the main stem.Scientists say the auxin has
an indirect effect on buds(芽) on the side of the stem to prevent branching.
These buds themselves also produce auxin. The research suggests that to grow, they have to be able
to export the hormone into the main stem. But the flow from the stem tip prevents them from doing this.
The researchers wanted to find out how this blocking happens.
Professor Prusinkiewicz is on leave in Australia, but he sent us an email suggesting a simple way to
underst and the process.Think of a major road crowded with traffic. So many cars are on the main road
that the cars on the side roads cannot enter.
The stem is like the crowded main road. The new research shows that the buds on the side cannot
export their auxin into the main stem because it is too full. But if that main shoot is pruned(修剪), other
buds below it can start exporting. They are no longer prevented from growing.
Ottoline Leyser from the University of York says that after a plant is pruned, all the inhibited(被抑制的) shoot tips compete with each other to grow.In doing this, the branches influence each other's growth.
Nearby shoot tips are more likely to affect each other than those that are far apart from each other.
Professor Leyser says the strongest branches grow best, wherever they may be on the plant. The
study found that the main shoot grows the best of all not because of its position at the top of the plant,
but mostly because it got there first.

1. The underlined part "two continents" in Paragraph 2 refers to "________".
A. Asia and Africa
B. Africa and Europe
C. North America and Europe
D. Australia and Europe

2. Professor Prusinkiewicz compares the cars on the side roads to ________.
A. plant stems
B. plant buds
C. the leaves of a plant
D. the roots of a plant

3. To make the buds on the side of the stem to grow better, the main shoot should ________.
A. be cut off
B. be protected
C. be watered as much as possible
D. be given much auxin

4. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Researchers have recently found out that the growing tip of a plant produces hormones.
B. Auxin has a direct effect on buds to keep branches from growing.
C. Buds on the side of the stem can't produce hormones.
D. In order to grow, the buds on the side of the stem export the hormones into the main stem.

Just as some people think that certain numbers are lucky or unlucky, others believe that we can
use numbers to understand our personalities, or predict what will happen to us in the future.
Numerology is a way of using numbers to describe a person’s character, and to make predictions
about future life events. Numerologists use the numbers 1-9, 11 and 22 - also known as the “master”
numbers - to help a person understand his or her personality, life goals, and destiny.
Numerologists consider your Life Path number to be the most significant because this number
describes your character. To find this number, add together all the numbers in your date of birth. For
example, a person born on April 25, 1985 would add the month (4), to the numbers of the date (2+5),
plus the numbers of the birth year (1+9+8+5). In this case the total is 34, so this person’s life path
number is 7(3+4). Numerologists believe that people with this number are peaceful and affectionate
but can also be very reserved.
Your Expression number describes your talents and predicts how you should use these to fulfill your
destiny in life. Numerologists assign a number between 1 and 9 to each of the letters in your name.
These numbers are then added together in the same way as before to find your Expression number.
Numerologists can also do calculations to predict when the most challenging periods of your life will be.
Numerologists also believe that the day a person is born is important. Each day of the month has a
character description. People born on the fourth are said to be responsible, honest, and stubborn.
People born on the fifteenth have very strong attachments to family and home. Those who celebrate
their birthday on the thirtieth are artistic, creative, and imaginative, and often make good writers.
If we calculate the numerical value of our name and birth date, numerologists believe that we can
learn more about our personalities. They also believe that we can predict our destinies, how our lives
will progress, and what challenges we may face along the way. To the numerologist, numbers can be
used in many more ways than we think.
1 If a person was born on November 8, 1995, what is his Life Path number?
A. 7
B. 8
C. 9
D. 11 ks5u
2 To understand your abilities and how to use them in your life, you should calculate your ______.
A. Life Path number
B. Expression number
C. birthday
D. name and birth date
3 According to the passage, a person born on the fifteenth tends to be _______.
A. stubborn
B. home-loving
C. artistic
D. imaginative
4 According to the passage, numerologists believe that _________.
A. Life Path number can be used to predict a person’s most challenging life periods
B. Expression number is the most meaningful for people to learn a person’s character
C. numbers can help people better understand themselves
D. numbers can be used to change a person’s future
5 The function of the passage is __________.
A. to raise doubts about the usefulness of numerology
B. to persuade readers about the benefits of the practices it describes
C. to describe some of the numerological practices and their purpose
D. to tease those who take such beliefs seriously

Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商),or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller,
happier lives.
Though we're all born with SQ, most of us don't even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don't
have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead
you to this new level of understanding.
Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude(独处)and silence. To
tune in to your spirit
, you have to turn down the volume(强度)in your busy, noisy, complicated life and
force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of listening to the music, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to your office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.
Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If
you are walking with the dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of a bird and
watch clouds float overhead.
Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as "What am I Feeling? What are my
choices? Where am I heading?"
But don't expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural forms of e-mail. "Rarely do I get an
immediate answer to my question," says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito,
California. "But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I
never considered before."
Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut(本能的)feeling to realize danger, spiritual intelligence
pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

1. The passage is mainly about______.
A. what your SQ is and in what way it can benefit our life
B. what your SQ is and in what way it can be improved
C. the relationship between your SQ and your life
D. advantages and disadvantages of SQ

2. The underlined phrase "to tune in to your spirit" in the third paragraph probably
means to_________
A. get your spirit relaxed
B. keep up your spirit
C. keep seated quietly
D. change your spirit

3. From the passage, we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is______
A. a peaceful mind
B. deep thought
C. spare time and hobbies
D. good spirits

4. According to the passage, which of the following is True?
A. Not everyone has SQ.
B. You have to go to classes to learn how to improve your SQ.
C. SQ leads us to take wrong actions.
D. SQ can benefit our life.

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet(彗星) is heading towards the
earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half
of the earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the earth's atmosphere(大气层) with a
massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the
South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in
the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water,
a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the
African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in
Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock
waves move north into Califomia and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los
Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions
of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape
for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures
around the world fall to almost zero.Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for
many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10
million people remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history
of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million
years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by
a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that
followed and died out. Will we meet the same end?
1. What is mainly described in the passage?______
A. A historic discovery.
B. An event of imagination.
C. A research on space.
D. A scientific adventure.
2. When the first piece hits the South Atlantic, it causes.______
A. an earthquake
B. damages to cities
C. an Earth explosion
D. huge waves
3. Why can't the northern half of the Earth escape for long?______
A. Because the land is covered with water.
B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth.
C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.
D. Because wars break out among countries.
4. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove .______
A. animals could not live in the cold climate
B.what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story
C. the human beings will die out in 2094
D. the Earth could be hit by other objects in space
Certainly no creature in the sea is stranger than the common sea cucumber (海参). All living
creatures, especially human beings, have their features, but everything about the little sea cucumber
seems unusual. What else can be said about an unusual animal that eats mud, feeds almost continuously
day andnight but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered
eatable?
For some fifty million years in spite of all its strange features, the sea cucumber has lived on its diet of
mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow Water, or
on the surface of mud flats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability
to suck up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present.
Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white.
One form even has vivid purple feelers. Usually the creature are cucumber-shaped — where their name
comes from - and because they live in rocks, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to press
into crevices (缝隙) where they are safe from animal eater and ocean currents.
Although they have greedy desire for food, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the ability to
become still and live at a low metabolic (新陈代谢) rate — feeding s little or not at all for long periods,
so that the living things in the ocean that provide their food have chance to increase by a large amount.
If it were not for this natural ability, they would swallow all the food available in a short time and would
probably starve themselves out of existence.
But the most impressive thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies
are fish and crabs. When attacked, it forces all its organs in its body out into water. It also removes
attached structures such as feelers. The sea cucumber will get rid of its organs and grow itself again if it
is attacked or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the
water becomes too polluted.
1. According to the passage, why is the shape of sea cucumbers important?
A. It makes them attractive to fish.
B. It helps them to digest their food.
C. it helps them to protect themselves from danger.
D. it makes it easier for them to move through the mud.
2. The fourth paragraph of the passage mainly discusses ______.
A. the reproduction of sea cucumbers
B. the food sources of sea cucumbers
C. the eating habits of sea cucumbers
D. the danger to sea cucumbers' existence
3. What can he inferred about the defense system of the sea cucumber?
A. They are similar to those of most sea creatures,
B. They are very sensitive to the surroundings.
C. They require group cooperation.
D. They are almost useless.
4. What would be the best tithe for the text?
A. The Variety of Sea Cucumbers
B. The Sources of Sea Cucumbers
C. The Similarity of Sea
D. The Strange Creature — Sea Cucumbers

Standard English is the formal English that you need to use when you write in coursework or in
the exam. Standard English is the form of English you learn in school. All written English should be
standard that means it should be clear enough for anyone in Britain to understand it. Standard English
developed as the main form. of printed English in the 15th Century. At the time, every region of Britain
used to spell w0rds differently, but printers needed a fixed spelling. Printers like Caxton chose the East
Midlands dialect form which was used in London and the South East. Soon Standard English replaced
all written dialect forms  the other forms of English spoken around the country. It also replaced French
and Latin in law and in academic work. In the 18th Century, people wrote dictionaries and grammar
books which standardized spelling Dr Johnson's Dictionary of 1755 fixed many of the spellings we
still use today. All written English should be Standard English any grammar rules you learn are for
Standard English and you will definitely need to learn them to avoid making mistakes in your work.
The rules of Standard English mean using the correct forms of words with the correct spellings.
Avoid slang words words that your teachers or friends wouldn't understand. You'll lose marks if
the examiners can't understand what you say or write. Don't use dialect words. Every region has
words or phrases that are only used there. Don't use them in your coursework, because you won't
be understood. Make sure you revise grammar and punctuation you have learned, and learn the list
of commonly misspelled words you have made. Cliches are ideas or sayings which have been used
so often that they've become boring and unoriginal. Phrases like, "As good as it gets" "At the end of
the day" "In the fullness of time" are all cliches. So are images like, "as fierce as a lion" "as cunning as
a fox". If you use them you will sound boring and unimaginative  that could mean you lose marks for
writing and speaking style. So avoid cliches.

C. the English used in London.
D. the English spoken by British people in 15th Century.
3. What is the cliche according to the passage?
A. the English full of slang words.
B. the boring ideas or sayings because of being used often"
C. the long phrases which are used often.
D. all the English which is used outside of London and the southeast of Britain.
4. Which statement is true?
A. Written English should be formal and standard.
B. Standard English means people should use the words from Dr Johnson's Dictionary.
C. All the spoken English should be Standard English.
D. Standard English replaced all written dialect forms in the 18th century.
