From my second grade on, there was one event I feared every year: the piano recital(独奏会).A recital 5 I had to practise a boring piece of music and per?form before strangers. So it was with really great 9 that I stood in church one recent Sunday, video camera in hand, and 10 my 68-year-old father sweating in his shirt 11 rising to play the piano in his very first recital.

But though he was rooted in his past, he wasn't 14 there. When he retired three years ago, he 15 his church music director to take him as a student.
For a moment after my father sat down at the key?board, he 16 stared down at his fingers. Has he forgotten the 17 ? And I 21 he had been doing what music teachers always stress: 22 the music and pretend the others aren't there.
"I'm 23 of him for starting something new at his age," I said to my son Jeff.
"Yeah, and doing it so 24 Jeff added.
With his first recital, my father taught me more about courage and determination than all the words he used those 30-plus years ago.

A. Vive la Tower!
Until New York's Chrysler Building was completed in 1930, the Eiffel Tower was the tal?lest structure in the world. Located by the river Seine, on an avenue named after its designer, this 985-foot (300-metre) tower is the most fa?mous edifice in the city of Paris. Gustave Eiffel's idea was certainly chosen from among 700 proposals to represent the city in the International Exhibition of Paris in 1889. It commemoratecK纪念)the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.
In 1887, three hundred steel workers spent two years constructing the 7,000-ton tower. Yet, it was almost torn down two decades after its comple?tion. Luckily, its antenna(天线),used for telegraphy at the time, saved it. Last July, it looked to observers as though the tower might be destroyed after all, as ominous (不吉利的)black clouds of smoke encircled the structure. Luck was again smiling upon the tower : the fire turned out to be a small one that was quickly put out by attendants on duty.
To date, more than 200 million people have visited the Eiffel Tower. However, it has not always been a beloved tourist attraction. At first, Pari?sians despised it. My wife's friend Rachel wouldn't stop complaining (抱怨).For twenty minutes she had a series of complaints. She complained about her job. She com?plained about her company's new policies. She complained about the economy. Most of all, she complained about her lack of sales at work.
I don't remember saying this, but Rachel likes to remind me that I finally stopped her from complaining by saying, "Rachel, will you please shut up?" Then I said, "It is really simple. You have a choice. You can accept your present job with a positive attitude and decide to do your best every day or you can find a new job in a new company. But whatever you do, stop complaining because it's not doing you any good. Either change your job or change your at?titude towards your job. " The conversation was over and so was our friendship, I thought, because Rachel wouldn't speak to me for a few months.
Then my wife and I saw her at a party and she told me that while it didn't feel good to hear what I had said* she decided to take my advice. She stayed in her job, stopped complaining and started selling more. Three months after changing her attitude, her sales were up 30%. A year later, her sales were up 70%. Everyone in her company wanted to know how she was doing it.
Rachel stopped complaining and started winning. How about you? Is complaining sabotaging you or your team? If complaining is holding you back, I know how you feel. I used to be a complainer. That's why I knew what Rachel needed To hear. I was in a similar situation 10 years ago. But I've learned that when you stop complaining and take positive action, you start winning. Give it a try !
