Many of us feel sleepy in winter,but other species often take it a step further and hibernate (冬眠).(36)BThe body slows down and breathing,temperature and metabolic and heart rate all decrease.Dormice (睡鼠) head underground and hedgehogs (刺猬) hunker down in their nests.
Hibernation seems to do them good.But human cannot bed down for long periods.(37)E To work out why we do not,first we need to find out why animals do.The most obvious reason for hibernating is to avoid the cold.Conditions are harsh and there is little food to eat,as fewer plants are growing.(38)G Then they live off body-fat reserves until it's time to wake up.
But a 2015study of dormice found that they continued hibernating even when cold conditions had ended. (39)AThe key issue seemed to be connected with their main food:beech trees.The dormice need their seeds to reproduce,or for the baby dormice to gain enough body fat.In a harvest year,they produce plenty of seeds.Somehow the dormice could predict it.Otherwise,they stop reproduction these years and increase their survival by staying underground.
(40)FBy staying out of sight,the dormice avoided being hunted by their predators (天敌) like owls.Until recently people thought hibernation was just about energy saving,a defense against cold weather and food shortage,and now we think it's more predator avoidance.The survival rates in hibernation are close to 100%.

A.So obviously there are other reasons.
B.They were hibernating underground to save energy.
C.Hibernation is an extended period of energy-saving state.
D.All kinds of animals hibernate,from insects to birds and primates.
E.Why,if it is so beneficial,do we not hibernate?
F.The dormice had another reason to stay underground.
G.So many animals fatten themselves up during summer.

Many of us feel sleepy in winter, but other species often take it a step further and hibernate (冬眠). The body slows down and breathing, temperature and metabolic and heart rate all decrease. They were hibernating underground to save energy.
Hibernation seems to do them good. But human cannot bed down for long periods. Why,if it is so beneficial,do we not hibernate?
Then they live off body-fat reserves until it's time to wake up. (So many animals fatten themselves up during summer.)
But a 2015study of dormice found that they continued hibernating even when cold conditions had ended. So obviously there are other reasons. 故选A.
By staying out of sight, the dormice avoided being hunted by their predators (天敌) like owls. The dormice had another reason to stay underground.

Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California.However,when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975,they didn't have much money.They moved their family to San Francisco.There they joined Danny's mother,Diana,who owned a small Italian sandwich shop.Soon afterwards,Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant.The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young.However,Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.
Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves,but one by one,the daughters returned to work in the family business.They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles.Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other,they worked together to make the business successful.Daughter Elisabeth explains,"Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity,and to have unity we must have peace.Without the strength of the family,there is no business."

17.My wife,daughter,and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like it does today.We live on a corner,higher than street level,and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall.The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk,the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.
We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our"rock garden".Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants,Denise or I would stick them out front,just to bring some color to the area.We would do all of the yard work on our own,even the tiring weed-pulling.
Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify,I knew I didn't plant it and Denise claimed that she didn't either.We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant,it appeared to be a Sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆) and only one head on it.I decided to baby it along and weed around it.As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds,I noticed something unusual.The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin.It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That's when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing,we too have the ability of doing the same thing.Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower,we can attain the same nourishment(营养) and growth as well.
Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you.You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

Five Major Differences between Successful and Unsuccessful People
Last year,Dave Kerpen,author and chief executive of Likeable Local,received a postcard that illustrated the traits and behavior of successful and unsuccessful people.He said,"The postcard has had a profound effect on me,reinforcing values I believe in and reminding me on a daily basis of the attitudes and habits that I know I need to embrace in order to become successful."
The postcard, shown below, points out five big differences between successful and unsuccessful people.
1.Successful people embrace change.Unsuccessful people fear it.Embracing change is one of the hardest things a person can do.With the world moving fast and technology accelerating at a rapid speed,it's imperative that we embrace these changes and adapt,rather than fear them,deny them,or hide from them.(36)B
2.Successful people want others to succeed.Unsuccessful people secretly hope others fail.When you're in an organization with a group of people,in order to be successful,you all have to be successful. (37)E
3.Successful people accept responsibility for their failures.Unsuccessful people blame others.(38)GBut they always accept responsibility for their failures.Blaming others solves nothing; it just puts other people down and absolutely no good comes from it.
4.Successful people give others all the credit for their victories.(39)ALetting people have their moments to shine motivates them to work harder,and,consequently,makes you look better as a leader or teammate.
5.Successful people continuously learn.Unsuccessful people fly by the seat of their pants.The only way to grow as a person,professional,and leader is to never stop learning.(40)FIf you just fly by the seat of your pants,you could be passing up opportunities that prevent you from learning and growing.
Besides the five major differences above, there are other differences:successful people exude joy, share data and information, and read every day, while unsuccessful people exude anger, hoard data and information, and watch TV every day.

A.Unsuccessful people take it from others.
B.Successful people are able to do just that.
C.Unsuccessful people talk about successful people.
D.You can learn and become more knowledgeable as you read.
E.The most successful people want to see their co-workers succeed and grow.
F.You can be a step above your competitor and become more flexible because you know more.
G.Truly successful leaders and business people experience both ups and downs in their lives and careers.

Do you drink water that's been left sitting out overnight or even for another day? Have you noticed it tastes different?

Tap water that has been left to sit out slowly begins to acquire an off taste. Many people think that this is because of microorganisms(微生物). But that's not what makes old water taste not fresh. For that we can thank carbon dioxide. After about 12 hours, tap water starts to go flat as carbon dioxide in the air starts to mix with the water in the glass, lowering its pH and giving it an off taste. But it's most likely safe to drink.

However, back to those microorganisms. If you use a dirty glass day after day, there is more of a chance of bacteria making themselves known; a risk that increases if you share the glass with another mouth as well. But assuming you use a fresh glass every few days, you probably won't have a problem unless the glass has been touched by dirty fingers, and especially if those dirty fingers went unwashed after using the bathroom.

As for plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car, step away from the bottle, warns Dr. Kellogg Schwab, director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute. "A chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA, along with other things used to make plastic can leach(过滤) into your water if the bottle heats up or sits in the sun," he explains. BPA, as you probably know, has been linked to everything from heart disease to cancer. Schwab also adds that plastic used for commercial bottled water isn't meant to be washed or refilled, so use only one time and recycle. Or don't buy them at all; use refillable water bottles instead.

9.As a child,I was generally happy,singing and dancing to my favorite songs,smiling and laughing with my friends and family.But as far back as second grade,I noticed a"darkness"about me.I didn't enjoy participating in many things.
In middle school things in my life began to get even worse.I began withdrawing from everything I once enjoyed.I was always tired.Everything was horrible.Finally,midway through eighth grade,I was told I had a chemical imbalance,diagnosed (诊断) with clinical depression,and had to take medicine.It took months for me to feel the effects of the medicine.
When I began to feel happy again is when I realized that I had to take the responsibility for getting better myself,rather than relying on medicine.Aristotle said,"To live happily is an inward power of the soul,"and I believe that this quote describes what I had to do to achieve happiness.Happiness is a journey.Everyone seems to need different things to be happy.
"The essentials (要素) to happiness are something to love,something to do,and something to hope for,"a quote from William Blake sums up what I believe people need to realize to be truly happy in life.People need love; I feel they need their family and their friends more than anything else in the world.People need work to do,something to make them feel they are making a difference in the world.People need to know that more good is to come in the future,so they continue to live for"now"instead of constantly worrying about the bad that could come.Love and hope are happiness.
