题目内容

While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an incredible(难以置信的) sight. The  36  was swimming and started with only three men. For one reason or another, two of them had a 37 start, so they were disqualified. That would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to  38 against.
I watched the man  39  off the blocks and knew immediately that something was wrong. Now I’m not an expert  40  but I do know a good dive 41 a poor one, and this was not exactly medal  42  . I listened to the crowd begin to  43 this poor man that was clearly having a  44  time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was 45  he made a few desperate(拼命的) stroke(划水) and you could tell he was exhausted.
But in those few  46 strokes, the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to  47 . Some even began to  48  things like, “Come on, you can do it!” and he 49  finished his race. The crowd went  50 . Even though he recorded one of the  51 times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other 52 .
In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals, feeling they have  53 been cheated out of gold, or when they act so  54  in front of their competitors, it is nice to watch an underdog(败者), a man that gave his all --- knowing that he had no chance, but competed because of his  55  and the spirit of the games.

There is a wide and deep choice of a career. Whether he’s a hand in construction or sitting behind the desk working on a computer, everyone has some ideas of what is an attractive career. However, making a career choice is not simply a matter of following a dream; for most people it means a lot of research and soul searching. Choosing the right career becomes one of the most important decisions of an individual’s life.
It used to be that one followed in the footsteps of their father or grandfather or took over the family’s business when it came to making a career choice. These days, a career path can start anywhere and then veer off into something totally different.
Career choices must be realistic and well thought out. It is not uncommon for persons to start a career path and realize they have made a terrible mistake, feeling as if it may be too late to turn around. Not only does a career choice concern your strongest skills and interest, it is also something that you will be doing continuously to bring in income. This is why a career choice can be such a personal decision. Formerly it used to be unusual for someone to change occupations or careers more than once or twice in a lifetime; it is now even more unusual to keep the same career during someone’s working life.
There are a great many measures in helping one choose the right profession. A number of websites offering tools such as career tests and information, educational resources, resume services and the kind can be found. It is important for one to research one’s career in this changing economy situation, and choose the best from several related career choices.

It was June 15, and in two days I would be turning thirty. I was not sure about entering a new decade of my life and feared that my best years were now behind me.
My daily routine included going to the gym for a workout( 锻炼) before going to work. Every morning I would see my friend Nicholas at the gym. He was seventy nine years old and in terrific shape. As I greeted Nicholas on that particular day, he noticed I wasn't full of my usual vitality(活力)and asked if there was anything wrong. I told him I was feeling anxious about turning thirty. I wondered how I would look back on( 回顾)my life once I reached Nicholas's age, so I asked him, “What was the best time of your life?”
Without hesitation, Nicholas replied, “Well, Joe, this is my philosophical(哲理的)answer to your philosophical question:
When I was a child in Austria and everything was taken care of for me and I was nurtured by my parents, that was the best time of my life.
When I was going to school and learning the things I know today, that was the best time of my life.
When I got my first job and had responsibilities and got paid for my efforts, that was the best time of my life.
When I met my wife and fell in love, that was the best time of my life.
The Second World War came, and my wife and I had to flee Austria to save our lives. When we were together and safe on a ship bound for(开往)North America, that was the best time of my life.
When we came to Canada and started a family, that was the best time of my life.
When I was a young father, watching my children grow up, that was the best time of my life.”

I once had a friend that was diagnosed with terminal cancer(晚期癌症), and the news that he might only live up to six months was a great shock to him, his family, and his friends. However, in spite of the serious illness, he was initially determined to look into all available treatments that might cure or extend his life.I think that when you find yourself in such situations, you tend to look up every possible way for hope of saving your life.
As months went on and his health grew worse, I noticed an unexpected change in attitude that came over him.He had also been a happy person with a cheerful personality, but rather than give in to discouragement and self-pity, he took comfort in God and humanity(人性).His talks focused on others rather than himself, and he spoke of the afterlife as something he was prepared for, believing that his concerned ancestors, including his mother and father, were there waiting for him.
During the last few months, weeks, and days of his life, he was kindly cared for by family, friends, his loving wife, who looked after both his physical and emotional needs, and workers from a local hospice (安养院) came to the home to regulate(调节) his medication (药)and provide any other needed support. He didn't complain about his fate, and he willingly allowed others to serve him.
Indeed, one might think why God allows death and suffering in our world, but for me, such experiences taught me to value family more and kindness for others. You often can't learn these important attributes(属性)in the lap of luxury(处在优裕舒适的环境中), and perhaps, such an experience is the greatest and final gift the illness can give those left behind.

I still remember the last time I went to the playground with two of my children. It had rained during the night and the playground was very muddy (泥泞的). They had just put on clean clothes, so I was a little worried about the mud on the playground. It was not long before Kathy got her beautiful skirt dirty on the playground. She dug through the rocks. I was about to blame (指责) her for getting her clothes dirty when she ran towards me with a smile on her face. When she got to me, she handed me a little heart-shaped rock and said, “Here, Mom! Here is a heart for you —just because I love you! Keep it!” With tears in my eyes, I thanked her.
Should I blame her for getting her clothes muddy? No way! I still have that little heart-shaped rock. It is one of the best gifts that I have ever received. I realized that many times it was not necessary for us adults to worry about the small things our children did. Let them do what they’d like to.
I will spend a lot more time on the playground with my children. I’m sure I will learn a lot from them. It makes me think of the days when my grandfather told me, “You would not enter the kingdom of happiness until you pretended (假装) to be a small child.”

The simplest way to say it is this: I believe in my mother. My belief began when I was just a kid, who    36   becoming a doctor.
My mother was a domestic(佣人). Through her work, she observed that   37   people spent a lot more time reading than they    38   watching television. She announces that my brother and I    39  watch two to three pre-selected programs during the week. With our   40  time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and   41   written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks and highlights. Years later we realized her marks were a    42  . My mother was illiterate(文盲).
When I entered high school, I was a    43   student, but not for long. I began to like fancy clothes. I wanted to    44   other guys. I went from an A-student to a B-student to a C-student. One night my mother came home from her various jobs and I    45   about not having enough Italian knit shirts. She said, “Okay, I’ll give you all the money I    46   this week scrubbing floors and cleaning bathrooms, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With the money    47  , you can have all the Italian knit shirts you want.” I was very    48   with that arrangement but once I got through allocating(分配)money, there was   49   left. I realized my mother was a financial genius(金融天才)to be able to keep the roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, let alone buy    50  . I really realized my desire wasn’t going to get me    51  . Success requires intellectual preparation. I went back to my    52   and became an A-student again and eventually I    53   my dream and I became a doctor.
My story is really my mother’s story—a woman with    54   formal education who used her position as a parent to change the lives of her children. There is no job    55   than parenting. This I believe.
