Dear Mike,

I want to thank you again of having me in your home for the summer holidays. I returned to my village after moving away so long and it was really delighted to see most of my old friends again. I told my parents and all my friend here what a great time I had. I found very interesting to ride a horse down a river. I also enjoyed the evenings we spent them together. But I can't forget the good food you cook for me. It was wonderful. I wish you two can come to my home some time soon. Father and Mother look forward to see you. Maybe you could come during a winter holidays. My uncle Ben will also come back for Christmas with us. I¡¯m sure we'll have a wonderful time together.

With best wishes.

Yours truly,

Tom

We all face quantities of stresses in day-to-day living, whether at work, in the home, or anywhere in between. ¡¾1¡¿ Here's how stress can help us on an everyday basis.

¡ô Sharpen your memory.

Did you ever notice that sometimes when you are stressed, your memory seems to improve? Remember that test you passed where the answers seemed to come out of nowhere? ¡¾2¡¿ It's because of stress hormones£¨ºÉ¶ûÃÉ£©that increase your alertness(»úÃô) when it's most needed.

¡ô ¡¾3¡¿

Successful employees turn stress into motivation. Have you ever noticed that you get the least amount of work done when you have the fewest deadlines? Too little stress can affect how much you actually get done. When you take risks and choose to get over the difficulty, it improves your mental toughness and self-confidence.

¡ô Helping you resist the attack of illness.

¡¾4¡¿ Believe it or not, the right kind of stress can help your body's defenses against illness. When you get sick, stress causes you to make hormones that battle threats to your health. That burst of stress is helpful to your immune system when your body faces a threat.

¡ô Making your life more interesting.

Think about some stressful situations that we consciously put ourselves in to make life more interesting and enjoyable, like asking someone out on a first date, conquering a known fear, or learning something new. These may not immediately come to mind when you think of stress because of the positive outcomes. ¡¾5¡¿

A. Helping you get an advantage at work.

B. Helping you get through difficult times.

C. This will happen whenever you are stressed.

D. That's one way your brain responds to stress.

E. You need a healthy immune system to help fight off diseases.

F. But they're the types that can help you achieve fulfillment and happiness.

G. But handled properly, stress can have many benefits for the body and mind.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (ÒÀÀµ) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit (×·Çó) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ¡°I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.¡± What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(»º½â) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

¡¾1¡¿What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

¡¾2¡¿Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A. It pushes society forward.

B. It builds up a sense of duty.

C. It improves personal abilities.

D. It encourages individual efforts.

¡¾3¡¿The underlined phrase ¡°the most vocal¡± in Paragraph 3 means ______.

A. those who try their best to win

B. those who value competition most highly

C. those who are against competition most strongly

D. those who rely on others most for success

¡¾4¡¿What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a ¡°desire to fail¡±?

A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.

B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.

C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.

D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.

¡¾5¡¿Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Every effort should be paid back.

B. Competition should be encouraged.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿When I was in high school, I didn¡¯t know anything about engineering. At that time, when the car I drove needed repairing, I was afraid to take it to the . Because honestly, the mechanic could have me an electric can opener and said, ¡°This is part of your car and it¡¯s -----pay me to fix it.¡± Then I wouldn¡¯t have known any better.

At the end of my junior year of high school, I heard about a summer program to interest girls in engineering. The six-week program was free, and students were college credits and a dorm room at the University of Maryland. I applied to the program, not because I wanted to be an engineer, but because I was looking forward to and wanted to stay away from my parents for six weeks.

I was accepted to the program and I earned six engineering credits. The next year I entered the university as an engineering student. Five years later I had a degree and three good job offers.

I can¡¯t help shaking I hear about studies that show women are when it comes to math. They imply that I am a little stupid. I¡¯m not, but I know that if I hadn¡¯t met with that summer program, I wouldn¡¯t be an engineer.

When I was growing up, I was told, as many students were, to do what I was best at. But I didn¡¯t know what that was. Most people think that when you are something, it comes easily to you. But this is what I discovered: just because a subject is to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. You just have to grit your teeth and work hard to get good at it. Once you do, there¡¯s good that you will enjoy it more than anything else.
