【题目】How to Become More Confident

Our confidence plays an important role in ability to achieve success and happiness. It affects our mental thought patterns, the way we speak and act, and the decisions we make in all areas of our lives. Confident people take more action, perform better, and are more likely to achieve their goals.1Lucky for us, confidence can be built and strengthened until it becomes natural, just as any other habit. It simply takes a little time, some effort, and a bit of attention.

Fail more often. The more challenges you take on, the more failures you’ll have, but learning that you can recover, get up and push forward builds confidence.

2Keep a list of successes, big and small. It’ll help you to see your abilities in a more positive and realistic light.

Start a conversation. When you find yourself in a social situation, don’t always turn to those people you’re comfortable with.3Eventually getting to know new people will become easier.

Don’t compare. Stop measuring yourself against others.4Making comparisons is a damaging and an inaccurate measure of success anyway.

Confidence helps you to be more secure in your abilities and more positive in your attitude. It also encourages you to be more assertive(坚定自信的) to take on more challenges, and to improve your skills.5The end result is a better outlook, more success, and a higher quality of life in all areas.

A. List your super abilities

B. It may only do harm to them

C. Track your accomplishments

D. The result you get isn’t always real

E. Talk to someone you don’t know very well

F. As an added benefit, you’ll attract like-minded people

G. What’s more, confident people can take more joy from their accomplishments

【题目】In 1996 John Jones made an unusual discovery. He had just enlarged (扩大) a piece of paper money for a friend—a Confederate bank note, money issued (发行) by banks in Southern States of America during the Civil War. When he was face to face with the picture, he couldn’t believe his eyes: slaves (奴隶) happily picking cotton in their master’s fields.

Jones grew up in South Carolina. He had heard painful stories of slavery from his greatgrandmother. The picture on the money did not match (匹配) the history of African American slaves that he’d heard all his life. “I had never seen that type of picture on money before,” he said.

Jones wondered why slaves looked so happy. He started doing research.

Searching for and finding the answers to his questions changed his life. During two years’ search, Jones found more than 120 different bills. He discovered that the bills had several things in common. They showed slaves working in jobs related to farming. Many of them showed healthy and smiling slaves at work. None of the bills showed the hardships of slavery.

Jones wanted to share what he had learned. “I wanted other people to see what I had seen,” he said. He decided to make large paintings of the pictures on the money. After three years of work, Jones had painted more than 80 slavery scenes (场景).He paired each painting with the money on which the picture appeared. “The Color of Money”—an exhibit (展览) of his work—has toured the country.

Jones' paintings tell an important story about the South 150 years ago. He likes to repeat the saying. “The story is on the money.” In this case, the saying happens to be true.
