Part of the American Dream for most people is to own home. Right now, about 65% of them do. But in time, fewer and fewer Americans will be able to make their dreams come true. There are fewer houses to buy , and houses have become much more expensive in the last thirty years. In Atlanta,Georgia area, for example,a house that cost $60,000 in 1976,sold for $500,000 in 1995.

A map is a picture of a place. There can be many different maps of the same place. A map cannot show everything about a place. For a clear map,it must show a number of things. Here, you will get to make a map which shows the things that make your community(社区)a special place to live in.

Before you start drawing, make a list of the places and things in your community that you want to include on your map. Think about places you often have to go to,places where your relatives and friends live and which are your favorite. How do you get there? What roads or paths do you take? What kind of things do you see along the way? As you know, some maps are made to show locations and other maps show us how to get there. They can also show the distances.

Now,let's create a map of your community. On a large piece of paper, draw pictures of the places or the things you decide to include on your map. Next, fill in the shapes of the places and roads in light colors. Using darker colors, fill in the areas between the features and roads on your map to make it more interesting to look at. Every area of your map should be filled in with colors. When your map is finished, show it to your friends or family members to see what they think of it.

It was two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bike. Her Barbi bike was just too old,and it needed repairing as well.

As Christmas came nearer, her dream for a bike seemed to disappear, for she didn't mention it again. We were busy buying some beautiful story books,a doll house,a holiday dress and some toys. Then much to our surprise,on December 24, she said she really wanted a bike more than anything else.

Now we didn't know what to do. It was just too late. We were busy with Christmas dinner and packing children's presents, parents' presents,a brother's present and friends' presents till midnight. So there was no time to take to buy the "right bike" for our little girl. Thinking that we were parents who would make their child unhappy , we felt guilty and sad.

On Christmas morning,we were so excited for Almie Rose to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. She opened and read the note loudly. She looked at me and Ron and said, "So,does this mean I can trade in this bike for a real one?" Smiling,I said, "Yes.   You can see kangaroos everywhere in Australia. They appear on TV , in books and in the shops. The government even plans to put them on passports(护照).Although it's the best loved animal in Australia, millions of kangaroos are killed every year. Why,people ask,do the Australians kill them? Quite simply, there are too many of them.

The number of kangaroos in Australia is believed to be 20 - 25 million. It is as much as 7 million more than the number of people living in the country.

There are several reasons for the growth in the kangaroo numbers. There is plenty of water in the places where kangaroos live and many of the dingoes―dogs that like to kill and eat kangaroos , are not there any more.

Kangaroos also produce(繁殖)the young all the year round. When a female kangaroo gives birth (生育).she gets pregnant again immediately (马上).

The large number of kangaroos means some kangaroos don't get food to eat. They are so hungry that they break into farms and fight against other animals for food.

To solve the problem , the Australian government allows a certain number of kangaroos to be killed each year.

Many people don't think that it's right to kill kangaroos, but the government thinks that it is only helping the farmers.
