I asked Jack, a friend of mine, what has happened to him that night. He said that he had just got into bed on about half past eleven when the floor began to shake under him. The bed was also started shaking. He jumped out of his bed rapid and wanted to turn the light on. But the floor was shaking such violently that he could hardly reach the lamp. It seemed to take him long time to get to it and turned it on. Then he went to look out of the window. He saw that the houses on the other side of the street was also shaking. Then he knew that was happening — an earthquake! He quickly put on his clothes and ran out into the street to waiting until it was safe to go back inside.

1.第一处:has →had.

2.第二处:on →at.

5.第五处:such →so. 表示如此以至于,此处修饰副词violentlyso,such修饰名词,故such →so.

6.第六处:long前加a. 此处是固定结构a long time,表示很长一段时间,故long前加a.

8.第八处:was →were.

9.第九处:that →what. that →what.

Dear Mum and Dad

We're having a wonderful time in Australia. There is so much to see that it is impossible for me to tell you everything. During past three days, we've travelled a lot around Sydney. We went to the zoo, on where we saw many animals that can only be found in Australia. We spent some time relaxing in the sunshine at the beach, but we went to Pitt Street and wander around for a bit while we did some shopping. Though I would like to spend more time here, the locally guide told us that we will fly to Cairns tomorrow. It's said that word cannot describe the beauty of the ocean near Cairns. Now everybody is busy packed so that we will not lose time when we set off. This time tomorrow we will be enjoying the ocean near Cairns. I can't wait!

Because I have much more to tell you, I must go to bed now so that I can get up early and get to the airport on time. Please send my best wishes to Granny and tell she that I am coming back soon.

Love

Robert

If anything can be said about recordbreaking globetrotter (环球旅行家) Graham Hughes, it's that— throughout his travels— he's always kept his feet firmly on the ground.

The 33yearold adventurer, from Liverpool, has become the first person to visit all 201 countries in the world without using a plane.

Hughes used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days — all on a shoestring(资金微薄) of just $100 a week.

He spent four days “crossing open ocean in a leaky (漏的) boat” to reach Cape Verde on the North Atlantic, was jailed for a week in the Congo for being mistaken as a “spy”, and was arrested trying to “sneak (溜;偷偷地做) into” Russia.

And yesterday Graham Hughes trudged (长途跋涉) into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to end the epic fouryear journey that began in his hometown of Liverpool on New Year's Day 2009.

“I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was that I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,” he told the Christian Science Monitor. “I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact it is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”

Guinness has now confirmed that Hughes, who filmed the expedition for a documentary and raised money for charity Water Aid, has achieved the world record.

“The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,” Hughes added.
