8.Brazil has become one of the developing world's great successes at reducing population growth-but more by accident than design.While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates,Brazil has had better result without really trying,says George Martine at Harvard.
Brazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951and 1960to 1.93% a year between 1981and 1990,and Brazilian women now have only 2.7children on average.Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990,an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.
Martine puts it down to among other things,soap operas and installment(分期付款)plans introduced in the 1970s.Both played an important,although indirect,role in lowering the birth rate.Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of soap operas.Globo,Brazil's most popular television network,shows three hours of soaps six nights a week,while three others show at least one hour a night.Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.
"Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of Reproduction(生育),they describe middle and upper class values:not many children,different attitudes towards sex,women working,"says Martine."They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values,which were put into a very attractive package."
Meanwhile,the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers."This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible(不相容的) with unlimited reproduction,"says Martine.

82.Soap operas and installment plans.
83.They have changed people's values and behaviors./They have gradually changed people's way of life.

82.Soap operas and installment plans.细节题:从第三段的句子:Martine puts it down to among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s.可知巴西的人口出生率的下降是由于电视剧和分期付款.Soap operas and installment plans.
83.They have changed people's values and behaviors./They have gradually changed people's way of life.细节题:从第四段的句子:"They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package."可知这些电视剧改变了人们的价值观和行为:They have changed people's values and behaviors./They have gradually changed people's way of life.
84.Brazil has successfully reduced its population growth.主旨题:根据第一段1,2行Brazil has become one of the developing world's great successes at reducing population growth, but more by accident than design.说明文章讲的是巴西出生率的下降,Brazil has successfully reduced its population growth.

7.As you probably know,J.Paul Getty was one of the richest and moat successful American industrialists in history.Quite ambitious from an early age,Getty made his first million at age 23in 1916.He later went on to found the Getty oil company,In 1957,Fortune magazine named him the richest living American and in 1966,the Guinness Book of Records named him as the world's richest private citizen.
Although he is highly regarded by vast numbers of people for his financial success,as a younger man,his drive to acquire power and money had a detrimental impact on other aspects of his life,particularly in his relationships with women.He was,at one point quoted assaying"A lasting relationship with a woman is only possible if you are a business failure."He married five times,having children with four of these wives.He couldn't seem to keep a marriage going for very long.His obsession with having a fortune and power alienated (疏远) each of his wives,eventually driving them away. His marriage with his first wife Jeanette lasted for only three years,with Allene for two years,Adolphine,four years,Ann,four years,and finally Louise,nineteen years.
Perhaps as a young man,Getty was willing to pay whatever price for financial success.Yet Paul came to feel some regret in regard to his life priorities as he approached his later years when he Wrote:"I hate and regret the failure of my marriages.I would gladly give all of my millions for just one lasting marriage success."
At the end of Getty's life,all of the wealth that he had got meant very little to him.It was only then that he became wise enough to understand what really mattered most.Despite all of his accomplishments,he died with great regret.
It's a sad story and a cautionary tale for those of us who may have chosen to make career building our highest priority(优先权),thereby ignoring our relationships.Like any other living organism,relationships require care and attention in order to grow.Even the strongest relationships will he damaged,if there is not enough care.

79.I'm the only person I know that's lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year.It's very character-building.Don't equate making mistakes with being a mistake.There is no such thing as a successful person who has not failed or made mistakes,there are successful people who made mistakes and changed their lives or performance in response to them,and so got it right the next time.They viewed mistakes as warnings rather than signs of hopeless inadequacy.Never making a mistake means never living life to the full.F
80.Don't be trapped by the results of other people's thinking.Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.And most important,have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.No doubt,it's your life and you have every right to spend it in your own individual way without any hurdles or barriers from others.Give yourself a chance to live a life that YOU choose and be your own boss in a fear-free and pressure-free climate.So go ahead,give them a try.D.

[4]Think of mistakes as opportunities to prove yourself.A mistake becomes an opportunity to create a close friend or customer.For example,in business,studies show that one of the things all customers want is recovery when the organization has made a mistake.They want us to apologize sincerely.With creative thinking,we can make them satisfied with the way we deal with a mistake.

17.When it comes to finding their way back home, mice are definitely in the first place. In fact, they find their way around in much the same way we do!
Recently scientists at Oxford University found that wood mice have a rare ability. They actually create a type of"road sign"to tell themselves which way to go.Until now, most people did not think animals could do this.
Wood mice live in large open fields. One part of the field looks much like the next.Scientists wondered how wood mice kept from getting lost without landmarks. How did they remember where they hid their food?By studying a group of these mice, researchers learned that these clever mice pile seeds, leaves and other materials at places they want to remember.
What is truly remarkable is that these markers are visual.Wood mice have large eyes. They rely on their vision to fine their way.House mice,by contrast, follow their own smell to get back to their nests. However, leaving a small trail in an open field could be very dangerous.Enemies might use it to track down the little mice.Wood mice do not have to worry about this.Other animals do not know what their markers mean.
Researchers wanted to learn more about this unusual behavior. To do so,they needed to study the mice more closely. They decided to place a group of mice inside a box and film their activity. They also put some small plastic discs and a small amount of food in the box.Soon the mice began moving the discs. They used them to hide food. They also shifted them from place to place as they moved farther and farther away from their nesting area.
Researchers believe this new information may change how people think about these little creatures, and one of the first steps in realizing that mice are not as silly as we probably originally thought. One thing seems certain that these remarkable road signs will be a focus of scientific research for some time to come.
