Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have existed on the planet, and they can grow to a length of 100 feet and weigh more than 330,000 pounds. But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the move and they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercial whaling ended in 1965.

The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts.

Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s,whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.

The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the California population.

To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.

Summer Rain

The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. And then, summer comes, and it rains.

As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn’t fair. We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather.

On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read any books that I could find lying around. I’d drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.

As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems dull. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful — and considerably cooler — weather tomorrow.

A. preferred cooler weather

B. hated rainy days

C. liked staying indoors

D. dreamed on summer days

2.We can learn from the passage that the author ______.

B. preferred reading to playing outside

C. had no brothers or sisters

D. could enjoy the brilliant sun in winter

C. he can better deal with his holiday

D. rain makes the weather cooler

Nobody likes having to deal with an upset child. If your little one is hurt, scared or sad, your heart breaks for her. If she’s mad, it can make you mad. You want to be there for her and comfort her, but the best way to do that will depend mainly on two things: why she’s upset and how old she is. Be calm and open-minded when trying to comfort your upset child.

Try to find out why your child is upset, because that affects how you should respond and what will be most effective in trying to comfort her. Take her aside and sit down to talk on her level, physically and emotionally. Be sure she knows she has your complete attention while she’s telling you about the friend who wouldn’t share her new toy and so on. Even if you’ve got 20 other things you need to get done, make yourself take a break and focus on her for a few minutes.

Listen carefully to what your child says, and also pay attention to what she’s not saying. If she says she’s upset because “she hates her stupid school”, you must “choose to accept it” — to read between the lines. Maybe she’s struggling with her studies, or the teacher scolded(责备) her in front of everybody. Patiently listen and try to draw her out so you know what kind of problem you’re dealing with.

Sometimes just knowing someone hears her pain goes a long way toward comforting an upset child. Don’t make excuses or blame others, just let her know her feelings are natural and understandable. Give her permission to feel sad for a little bit or even cry a little, and give her a big hug. Then help her think of ways to get over the hurt and refocus her attention on another activity or friend.

1.What is the purpose of the author in the passage?

A. To show an upset child is very tough.

B. To share his experience of keeping a child.

C. To tell how to comfort an upset child.

D. To get advice on how to raise a child.

2. When faced with an upset child, the parents________.

A. may feel at a loss(不知所措)what to do next

B. should turn to experts for advice

C. should keep him company all the time

D. will easily get angry and frustrated

3.When parents have a talk with their child patiently, she can .

A. focus her attention on the talk

B. understand her parents easily

C. talk about her new toy with you

D. open her heart to the parents

4.The underlined part in the passage means to________.

A. advise her to tell the reason

B. drive her out of home

C. take her to the outside

D. blame her

In much society, there is often greater acceptance of light skin than dark skin; Light skin may be seen as a mark of beauty, intelligence and success. These beliefs can lead to social pressures even within the same group, if some members are darker than others.

The result is that skin lightening has become very common across Africa, Asia and other areas of the world and more people with dark skin are using skin-lighting products, even if it means they may face health risks. They believe that having whiter skin will improve the quality of their lives. Many people think they will have a better family. Or they want to look like what their society generally considers beautiful.

Some beauty care(美容) products and soaps contain chemicals that make skin lighter. However, some of the chemicals are extremely dangerous. The chemicals in the products block and break down the natural barrier(障碍) to protect against sunlight. Then the skin can become thick and discolored. Usually the person will use more of the product in an effort to correct the problem, which just makes things even worse. Doctor Ly says some chemicals are so dangerous that they may lead to blackened fingernails, infections(感染) and serious skin damage.

And these are not the only problems. Experts say some people who change their skin color suffer emotional damage. They feel regretful and sad. They feel that instead of risking their health, they should have learned to live and accept their skin color as it was.

1.What’s the result of the wrong understanding of darker skin?

A. Many people with dark skin try to make their skin whiter.

B. Many people with whiter skin live a better life than others.

C. People with darker skin try to marry people with light skin.

D. People with darker skin try to protect themselves against social pressures.

2.The third paragraph is about.

A. some medical effects that skin-lightening products have brought about

B. the mental damage that skin-lightening products have caused

C. the physical damage that skin-lightening products have caused

D. the causes why skin-lightening products can make skin whiter

3. Why are chemicals in beauty care products dangerous?

A. They can damage the skin’s color producing progress.

B. They can control people’s emotions and feelings.

C. They can make the fingernails and skin black.

D. They make more people decide to change their skin colors.

4. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Different Colors of Skin

B. The Dark Side of Skin Lightening

C. What Is Beauty?

D. Light Skin or Dark Skin?

Do you like somewhere a little bit different to the usual types of places you find on the high street? I do,so I’m glad to see new ones popping up(冒出)everywhere in London.

The so called pop-up shop is a temporary arrangement. In the aftermath(余波)of the financial crisis of 2008,many businesses had to shut down.Shops, warehouses and offices were left vacant when they stopped trading.Pop-up enterprisers occupied some of them quickly. For them the appeal of this temporary shopping concept is clear:they can start a business with much 1ower risk. The temporary nature of a pop-up shop gives the opportunity to test a product and develop a customer base, without being tied in to a long-term renting contract. Being small makes it much easier for pop-ups to expand if they are successful·

Pop-up shops first appeared in the UK in the early 2000s,with the economy booming. They were originally a way for small companies to rent retail space(零售场所)in great locations. This was while landlords who owned these spaces looked for permanent renters.

Pop-up shops can take a number of different forms. They might be temporary shops in the high street or a shopping centre. They might be simple market stalls(摊位). They could be based in some kind of transport, like a food truck.Or they could be run by people who visit different establishments, like travelling chefs who take over pub and restaurant kitchens temporarily.

According to a report by the Centre of Economic and Business Research, the pop-up industry was worth£2.1bn and is expected to grow by 8.4%this year.Almost anything that can be on a high street can also be a pop-up.There have been pop-up shops, art galleries, theatres and restaurants among others. In an age of fast-changing habits, the pop-up idea might be here to stay.

1.What nature of the pop-up shops appeals many small companies?

A.Long-terra benefits. B.Lower prices.

C.Quick service. D.Temporary shopping concept.

2.Pop-up shops first appeared mainly because__________.

A.the economy hadn’t recovered

B.the economy was doing well

C.shops couldn’t meet needs

D.enterprisers failed in their business

3.Which groups are the main people involved in setting up pop-up shops?

①enterprisers ②landlords ③travelling chefs ④truck drivers

A.①③ B.②④ C.①② D.③④

Washington: NASA has announced evidence that Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, has a saltwater ocean under its icy surface. The ocean seems to have more water than all the water on Earth's surface, according to new Hubble observation.

New Hubble observations of Ganymede's magnetic field strongly suggest that the moon, which is the largest in our whole solar system, is home to a subsurface ocean.

Scientists estimate the ocean is 95 kilometres thick, which is about 10 times deeper than Earth's oceans. But unlike our salty waters, Ganymede's ocean is buried under 150 kilometres of ice.

While scientists have speculated(推测) since 1970s about the presence of an ocean on Ganymede------the largest moon in our solar system------ until now the only observational evidence came from a brief flyby by the Galileo spacecraft, which didn’t observe the moon long enough to confirm a liquid ocean.

This discovery marks an important milestone, highlighting what only Hubble can accomplish. In its 25 years in orbit, Hubble has made many scientific discoveries in our own solar system. A deep ocean under the icy surface of Ganymede opens up further exciting possibilities for life beyond Earth.

Scientists have already confirmed the existence of an ocean on Europe, another moon orbiting Jupiter, and NASA has announced plans to send an unmanned mission there searching for the life that might come with liquid water.

Hubble is a telescope that orbits Earth, but because of its impressive gravitational analyses it can be used to study the inside of far distant planets. Using these same principles, scientists could theoretically detect oceans on distant planets as well.

1.What can we learn about the Ganymede from the passage?

It is a planet with the largest moon in our whole solar system.

B. Its ocean adds to people’s excitement about life beyond Earth.

C. It will be used by NASA as a base for the Hubble telescope.

D. Its liquid ocean was first proved by the Galileo spacecraft.

2.Which of the following best describes the writer’s attitude towards Hubble?

A. Cautious B. Doubtful

C. Negative D. Favourable

3.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 6 mean?

An underground ocean has been found in Europe.

B. The presence of an underground ocean in Europe is not possible.

C. It is now certain that there is an ocean on Europe.

D. No evidence has shown the existence of an ocean on Europe.

4.What type of writing does this passage belong to?

A. A term essay

B. A news report

C. An experiment report

D. An exploration review.
