A poet is in his words

The writings of William Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britian. His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.

Still, in British schools, ____________ to study the poet, and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment or both. Shakespeare, Chareles Dickens, Jane Austen-for many of the young, reading them can seem like being forced to eat medicine, especially when people are at an age when they are beginning to discover themselves and wanting to claim their independence.

This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart. Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me. I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.

I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught the subject in universities in Britain and China. I have never regretted it. There is something in literature that people want, even if they don’t read books.

You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice being a case in point. These popular adaptations may help increase people’s interest in the classic.

Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare’s actual play. If that is the case then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing. Shakespeare is a poet and his greatness is in his language. Reading someone else’s rewriting of his work is like peeling (剥皮) a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin. Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.

Most people say “yes” much more readily than “no”.
A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was relaxing at home for a couple of quiet days. Or a roommate spends the whole weekend playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference”. But, you’ve just finished it after working hard for a whole day.
Many people say “yes” to this kind of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. Saying “no” requires courage and considerable practice. “Everyone wants to be liked,” says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist, “Saying ‘no’ risks losing the affection of the person asking for the favor. Or even a job.” The result is that many people say “yes” just for keeping the peace. But experts say this regrettable. Anyone should have the right to say “no”. In fact, rejecting a request can even help to stabilize a relationship because it expresses real affection. But, for people accustomed to agreeing every request, it’s very distressing to say “no”.
Most people believe that if they say “no”, they’ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to them. This way of thinking can be replaced by this: “If he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of this affection is too high in the long term.”
When people saying “no”, Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly until the person gets the message.

[1]An 18-year-old student was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, he came up with a bright idea. He and a friend decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education.
[2]They reached out to the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski. His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck and the boys began to work to make the concert a success.
[3]The big day arrived. But unfortunately, they had not managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and explained their plight(困境). They gave him the entire $1600, plus a cheque for the balance(差额) $400. They promised to pay the cheque at the soonest possible.
[4]“No,” said Paderewski. “This is not acceptable.” He tore up the cheque, returned the $1600 and told the two boys: “Here’s the $1600. Please deduct(扣除)whatever expenses you have spent on. Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left”. The boys were surprised, and thanked him a lot.
[5]It was a small act of kindness. But it clearly marked out Paderewski as a great human being.
[6]Why should he help two people he did not even know? We all come across situations like these in our lives. And most of us only think “If I help them, what would happen to me?” The truly great people think, “If I don’t help them, what will happen to them?” They don’t do it expecting something in return. They do it because they feel it’s the right thing to do.
[7]Paderewski later went on to become the Prime Minister of Poland. He was regarded as a great leader in Poland’s history.

Let me tell you about five of the enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum,let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting:you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.

The second enemy we face is indecision(优柔寡断). Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy.

The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.              , they doubt themselves.I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is all enemy.Get rid of it.

The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some.Just don’t let it conquer you.Instead, let it alarm you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb (路边) in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries:drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.

The fifth enemy is overcaution. It is the timid (胆小的) approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue;it’s an illness. If you let it go,it’ll conquer you.Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.
