     In a time of low academic (学术的) achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are
turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement and economic (经济上的) success, for possible
answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to
find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little stress is put on academic instruction. In one study,
300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked
about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese listed "to give children
a good start academically" as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In comparison,
over half the Americans chose this as one of'their top three choices. To prepare children for successful
careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather
skills such as determination, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group.
     In the recent comparison of Japanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese chose
group experience as one of their top three reasons while 62 percent of the more individually oriented (强调
个性发展的) Americans chose it. A stress on the importance of the group continues into Japanese primary
school education 
     Like in America, there is diversity (多样性) in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese
kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities,
some kindergartens are attached to universities that have primary and secondary schools.
     Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will
increase the children's chances of finally being admitted to top-rated schools and universities.

    In college , Spring Break (春假) is usually associated with the beach, parties and sleepless nights,
bringing about relaxation, free time and friends. Students who wish to spend their break doing
something productive and rewarding, however, may choose to participate in the Altemative Break
Program. It places college students in communities both at home and abroad.
      The Program allows students to take part in various projects dealing with  issues  such  as  
literacy  (识字 ) , homelessness  and  the environment. It includes helping kids with their lessons,
raising money for families in need and collecting data for environmental research.
     The hope is that, by getting themselves involved in different environments, students will have the
opportunity to learn about members of communities and broaden their view. In turn, they will

break trips and had my life totally transformed by that experience , " she said. " Every year , we meet

     Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is
about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied

     In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition of each new
skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing.
It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up
dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage.
A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn
to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a
child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm
for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
     Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be
especially strict in money matters, others are severe over times of coming home at night or
punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and
the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.
     As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very
important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation
for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they
are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教),their children may grow confused
and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they
have been to some extent fooled.
