Feeling blue about world? “Cheer up.” Says science writer Matt Ridley.”The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.”
Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he’s carefully weighed the evidence; optimistic, because that evidence shows human progress to be both unavoidable and good. And this is what he’s set out to prove from a unique point of view in his most recent book. The Rational Optimist. He views mankind as grand enterprise that on the whole, has done little but progress for 100,000 years. He backs his finding with hard facts gathered through years of research.
Here’s how he explains his views.
1) Shopping fuels invention
It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone.Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, better ears, and of course, more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us.This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we’ll be.
2)Brilliant advances
One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer-lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs -food, clothing, fuel and shelter- have grown a lot cheaper.Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour’s light cost six hours’ work.In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes’ work to pay for.In 1950 it was eight seconds.Today it’s half second.
3)Let’s not kill ourselves for climate change
Mitigating(减轻)climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel(化石燃料)electricity is forbidden by well - meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose - bleed by putting a tourniquet(止血带)around our necks.

Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in his life, he might go home and write in his diary; now, a teenager with the    36   problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog(博客). In many ways, a diary and a blog are very   37  , but what makes blogging different from writing in a(n)  38  diary?
The biggest difference is that a blog is much more   39  than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats his diary like a book full of   40  that he does not want to   41  with others.
It’s interesting that someone who writes in a blog   42 a diary will probably write nearly the same information.
I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her  43 . She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry test.
44 I was her age, I wrote about the same thing, but   45  in my diary. Then, after I had finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was   46 that my sister might read it.
The biggest   47  with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend during high school and wrote something  48  about him in my diary, he would never know.   49 , if my sister ever wrote something bad about a friend, that friend might
50  her blog and get angry.
There are also   51  to blogging, of course. If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary “ Nobody cares about me …”, no one would   52  about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friend would quickly   53  and tell her how much they   54  her. Blog helps people   55  in contact with their friends and know what the people around them are doing.

I took my 9-year-old daughter,Suzan and 5-year-old son,Robbie to the shopping centre. As we got there,we saw a big sign that said,“Petting Zoo”.The kids jumped up and asked,“Daddy, can we go?”
Both my wife and I were out of work. However,I said,“Sure”,giving them a quarter each. They went away, leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.
A petting zoo is made up of a hundred of little baby animals of all kinds.Kids pay their money and stay in the enclosure(围场)pleased with the little animals while their parents shop.
A few minutes later,I saw Suzan walking along behind me.I was surprised and asked what was wrong.
She said sadly,“Well,Daddy,a ticket for Petting Zoo costs fifty cents. So I gave Robbie my quarter.” Then she said the most beautiful thing I ever heard. She repeated the family motto(座右铭),which is “Love is Action!”
I knew clearly no one loves little animals more than Suzan. She had watched both my wife and me do and say "Love is Action!” for years, and now she had put it into her lifestyle. It had become part of her, because she knew the whole family motto. It’s not only “Love is Action”;it’s “Love is SACRIFICAL(牺牲的)Action!" Love always pays a price.
I was moved. We went back to the Petting Zoo.Suzan stood with her hands and chin(下巴)resting on the fence and just watched Robbie go crazy petting and feeding the animals.I had fifty cents burning a hole in my pocket. I put my hand into my pocket and took out the money.Sure,I must do that !

Roy died at an old age with many memories. His life was full of both good and bad memories, but he  26  to remember mostly the good. The bad memories that broke his heart and that he  27 with friends, involved the big war-World War II. So many things about his war experience he remembered  28 great detail.

Roy survived the attack on Normandy-he was part of the second wave that landed. He 29 with him the memories of water mixed with the blood of fallen soldiers. He experienced 30 , sweat, blood, fire and salt water just to get to the beach. In terror-filled moments that would forever change his life and the history of our world, his life was robbed of innocence(天真)  31  the realities of war engulfed(吞噬)him.
Not too many months later, he found himself cold and  32 . Close to being completely 33 from air supplies(供给)because of the weather, Roy and his fellows hung on to what little hope they could have. Then Christmas morning came, the weather cleared long enough for supplies to be  34 and word to spread that other troops would soon be there.
Many of the young men who began with Roy did not make it home  35 . They gave their lives to fighting against the Nazi. Those who did survive would never be the same. Many of them were the most patriotic(爱国的)people you would  36 meet, but most of them  37 war. They had experienced it. They knew its final realities-things got blown up while people were killed, and robbed of their beloved ones.
It is Memorial Day in the United States today. We all pray for an end for the world’s need for young men and young women to be placed in harm’s way. What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt?Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?
This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion (蒲公英) standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.
I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe;my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood, I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate. Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad’s face as he unwrapped those black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.

It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which,    11  , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something    12   in the company should ever do. I wish I    13   give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow —    14   it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m    15  , experienced and I know better.
16   I work with some very kind and compassionate (富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to    17   by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar    18   they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “   19  ” person here.
One of the exchanges I had this week was with Lois, the much-honored, much-respected professional who    20   the desk right next to mine. Lois was completely    21   about her work, and to be honest I was a little nervous about how she would    22   to such an extremely embarrassing incident.
As I expected, Lois didn’t pass over the    23   when she saw me the next day. She mentioned it directly,    24   with empathetic consideration. She listened to my    25  . Just as I was ready to express my regrets, she brought my self-pity partly to a(n)    26  .
“It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to    27   that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s    28  . It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her    29   to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.”
I beat myself up for weeks. At such times I need to remember those    30   words: It’s over. It’s done. Let it go. And mostly, move on.
